A family doctor, as well as a sexologist, gynecologist, in his medical practice encounters problems related to skin diseases significantly affecting the sense of femininity or masculinity. An example of such an issue, especially in gynecology of developmental age, is the problem of skin changes associated with androgenization syndromes. Typical dermatological diseases are sometimes associated with enormous pain, not only physical, but also mental, resulting from the fact that skin disease processes significantly disfigure the body, lower self-esteem and significantly affect the sexual sphere. Selected aspects related to the holistic approach to the issue of pain and suffering, also related to skin lesions, are presented. This issue, like all medical fields, is a source of philosophical reflection. It is inseparable from psychodermatology. The experience of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, taking into account skin lesions, also prompts a similar search.

Inflammation within the genital organs in women is an important problem in gynecology and venereology. Understanding the factors contributing to the inflammatory process and the role of defense mechanisms against their occurrence is important in terms of prevention and treatment. The importance of pre and probiotics was also discussed. It has been proven that the use of probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics in the diet has a beneficial effect on many body functions. Functional food including an important role in the prevention of inflammation in gynecology. The mission of the medical community, in addition to treatment, should be an emphasis on informing parents, teachers and adolescents and indicating sources of reliable knowledge on topics related to health promotion (including the promotion of a proper diet, physical activity, hygienic lifestyle), which also significantly affects the prevention of inflammation, including sexually transmitted diseases.

This article discusses the life and activities of a Polish Army general, a doctor, diplomat and freemason, such as Boleslaw Wieniawa Dlugoszowski. After Poland regained independence, he became the personal adjutant of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski. After the outbreak of World War II, President Ignacy Moscicki appointed him as his successor, in case the office was vacated before peace was made. He is one of the most colourful figures in interwar Poland. He was known for his predilection for beautiful women, fast horses and loud fun. On the one hand, such a view of life caused unusual affection among some and undisguised aversion among others, especially among opponents of his political camp. He was also a writer, wrote poems, painted and maintained constant contact with the artistic community. For several years he was Poland’s ambassador to Rome, he was friends with many outstanding people not only in Poland, but also in the whole of Europe. After settling in the United States, he lived in New York. He was also a journalist and editor-in-chief of “Dziennik Polski” in Detroit. He died tragically in 1942, a few days before taking over the diplomatic post in Havana. He was remembered by his posterity as the author of many popular sayings, later widely quoted throughout the country.

Introduction. Patients treated for schizophrenia and for bipolar affective disorder have a potentially higher risk of developing chronic somatic diseases compared to the general population. Aim. This is to compare the prevalence of somatic co-morbidity in patients with schizophrenia, patients with bipolar affective disorder (BD) and available data on the prevalence of somatic diseases in the general Polish population. Material and methods. Archival data of 527 (F = 249) patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, aged 42.56 ± 14.25 (M ± SD), and 155 (F = 82) patients with BD, aged 48.05 ± 14.45 (M ± SD), hospitalized in psychiatric hospital in Central Poland in 2019 were analyzed. Results. Majority of patients with schizophrenia and with BD had no registered somatic co-morbidity (80.6 and 67.7%, respectively); most common group of coexisting somatic diseases in both subgroups of patients were diseases of circulatory system (11.0 and 22.6%, respectively); and the most common disease was primary hypertension (10.4 and 20.6%, respectively). In men in the 7th decade of life, diseases of the circulatory system were significantly more common in patients with BD than in those with schizophrenia (p = 0.004). The prevalence of somatic diseases in both subgroups of patients turned out to be lower than their prevalence in the general population. Conclusions. Somatic co-morbidity in patients with BP and with schizophrenia is potentially underdiagnosed. Possible reasons of this finding were carefully discussed.

Human actions aimed at satisfying the “sexual need” are complicated – they move many different mechanisms and go far beyond sexuality itself, and only in the case of the human species, in phylogenetic terms, we talk about eroticism encompassing sexuality together with the sphere of feelings, intellect and the sphere of the psyche. Sexual health should be understood holistically, which is important in both medical and pharmacy care. In the practice of a family doctor, sexual problems are reported by patients of different ages-particular aspects of the aging are discussed. According to WHO, sexual health is the integration of biological, emotional, intellectual and social aspects of sex life important for positive personality development, communication and love, and in addition to this definition of sexual health, sexual medical standards are based on the International Classification of Diseases and Health Problems and the Declaration of Rights. Tobacco smoking is one of the leading causes of death among people. Cytisine, a plant alkaloid considered to be the oldest medication for smoking cessation, has been used in Poland since the 1970s. The drug is a partial nicotinic receptor agonist, with pharmacological actions close to those of nicotine and varenicline (a synthetic cytisine derivative and most expensive smoking cessation medication currently available). Cytisine has several advantages compared to existing smoking cessation drugs, including: 1) it is more effective than placebo and nicotine replacement therapy, and at least as effective as varenicline, 2) its use is associated with a low frequency of adverse events, 3) it is available as over the counter medicine and is much cheaper than other smoking cessation drugs that are cost-prohibitive, 4) it derives from a natural plant and may be preferred by smokers who do not want to use other treatments, 5) it has shorter duration of treatment (i.e. 25 days) compared to other medicines for smoking cessation. This review describes the use of cytisine for nicotine addiction treatment, mechanism of anti-smoking action, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, tolerability and safety.

Introduction. The peroxidation of lipids is the effect of subjecting them to the high temperature. The studies have shown that the created oxidative stress can be counteracted by strengthening the body’s antioxidative system by introducing antioxidant vitamins or non-vitamin compounds into the body. One of the best antioxidants that works in both the water and lipid phase is an α-lipoic acid. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the influence α-lipoic acid on morphological changes in heart and kidneys of rabbits exposed to oxidized or non-oxidized rapeseed oil. Material and methods. The research was carried out on 36 rabbits of the Szynszyl breed. The animals were divided into 6 groups of 6 individuals. They were given the standard diet Labofeed Kamet (DS). They were drinking water at libitum. The animals in the control group received standard Labofeed Kamet feed, in group I (DS + LA) a-lipoic acid (LA) was added to the feed at a dose of 10 mg/kg, in group II (DS + NOR) ? there was added 10% non-oxidized rapeseed oil (NOR), in group III (DS + UOR) ? 10% oxidized rapeseed oil (UOR) was given, in group IV (DS + NOR + LA) the rabbits received feed enriched with non-oxidized rapeseed oil and α-lipoic acid, and group V (DS + UOR + LA) was enriched with oxidized rapeseed oil and α-lipoic acid in the same amounts as in the each group. After the experiment was completed and the animals were euthanised, the kidneys and hearts of the rabbits were collected for histopathological evaluation. Results. A high-fat diet causes adverse changes in both examined organs. The administration of α-lipoic acid showed a preventive effect on changes observed in organs. It was fully effective in the case of exposure of rabbits to non-oxidized rapeseed oil. When exposed to an oxidized oil, persistence of changes of lesser intensity were observed than when exposed only to oxidized oil. Conclusions. Dietary supplementation with antioxidants should be considered when exposed to oxidized lipids.

Introduction. Birch syrup is a unique foodstuff produced only in the several areas of the world through the evaporation of water from birch sap. It is a sweetener addition to various dishes and, at the same time, a rich, comprehensive source of minerals. The Polish forest environment provides sufficient raw material base for the production of birch syrup, but previous studies of native birch sap have highlighted the significant content of heavy metals. Aim. Verify the cadmium and lead content in birch syrup produced from the sap of birches growing on agricultural land in a region considered ecologically clean. Material and methods. Birch sap collection was carried out on 7-16 March 2019. The daily volume of sap from 20 trees was evaporated to a syrup consistency (68.5 ± 1.15°Brix) to obtain a foodstuff that complies with the recommendations. Cadmium and lead content was examined in an accredited laboratory using atomic absorption spectrometry. Results. An increase in heavy metal content has been observed over time. The cadmium content ranged from 0.16 to 0.36 mg/kg, and for lead, respectively 0.046 to 0.14 mg/kg. These concentrations should be considered high and disqualifying birch syrup in the light of health safety standards specified for the vast majority of foodstuffs. In addition, the very high percentage of implementation of the TWI for cadmium, already when consuming small amounts of birch syrup, indicates that its home production and consumption may be associated with serious health risks. Conclusions. Dietary supplements are the only category of foodstuffs for which the measured levels of cadmium and lead did not exceed the permitted safety standards. Registration of birch syrup as a dietary supplement is fully justified by the statutory definition of this group of foodstuffs, a form that allows dosage in limited quantities, as well as the chemical composition, characterized by a high content of minerals.

Introduction. Fluorine belongs to xenobiotics that cause disorders in the oxidative-reducting system. Recent studies with fluoride concern the use of natural products containing vitamins or antioxidant to prevent the oxidative stress generated by exposure to fluoride. Aim. The aim of the research was to evaluate the impact of resveratrol and α-lipoic acid on the cytotoxicity of fluoride relative to human lung fibroblasts IMR-90. Material and methods. In order to determine cytotoxicity of fluorine on human lung fibroblasts IMR-90, the cells were cultured with different NaF concentrations: 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 μg/ml. Cytotoxicity of the examined cells was also determined in cultures incubated with the resveratrol (RV) and α-lipoic acid (LA) in various combination of concentration: RV 3 μM and LA 25 μg/ml; RV 10 μM and LA 25 μg/ml. MTT test was used to evaluate the viability of the cells. The cytotoxicity assessment was carried out in three time intervals: after 24, 48 and 72 h. Results. It has been observed that NaF is cytotoxic in relation to the examined cell line, depending on its concentration and exposure time of cells. No significant changes have been observed in relation to the viability of the examined cells in cultures with combinations of different concentrations of the examined antioxidants. Preincubation of fibroblasts with RV and LA positively affected viability of cells cultured with NaF. The beneficial effect of the tested compounds was dependent on its concentrations, level of NaF and exposure time. Conclusions. The results indicate that a diet containing α-lipoic acid and resveratrol can play a protective role in exposed to fluoride.

The problem of childhood disturbed by sexual violence in the light of the philosophy of John Paul II (ethical context) is outlined and important medical aspects related to this pathology, also important in the practice of a family doctor, are discussed. Unfortunately, childhood is not a time of carefree and happiness for everyone. Violence, especially sexual violence, seems to be the greatest cruelty towards a child, negatively influencing the child’s psychosexual development, health, including sexual health, in later life. Both in gynecology and in sexology of developmental age, as well as in family medicine in terms of the problem of sexual crimes against children, care for a child is expressed in a special and specific way. It requires a special, empathetic and professional approach.
