The DPPH and Staphylococcus aureus inhibition by ethanol extract of papaya leaves has been evaluated. This research focussed on the use of papaya leaves extract as one potential herbal to be applied in cosmetics as an ingredient. Papaya leaves were extracted using the maceration method with 70% and 96% ethanol for 24 hours. Both ethanol extracts of papaya leaves showed that they could inhibit the free radicals of DPPH and S. aureus bacteria. Their activity related to its active compounds in phenolic compound form. The total phenolic content of 70% and 96% ethanol extract of papaya was 65.27±1.21% and 12.64±0.27% respectively. This total phenolic content was significantly different. The 70% ethanol extract of papaya has higher total phenolic content than 96% ethanol extract. Therefore, both 70% and 90% ethanol extract of papaya also resulted in different activity in S. aureus bacteria and DPPH inhibition. Antioxidant activity of both extracts possessed low ability to inhibit free radicals of DPPH. In contrast, their bacteria activity showed that 70% and 96% ethanol extract of papaya on the concentration of 8 mg/mL could inhibit the S. aureus bacteria growth around 1.47±0.05 mm and 1.37±0.05 mm, respectively. Based on these properties, papaya leaves extract can be applied for cosmetic ingredients in high doses to maximize its activity.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the correlation between total flavonoid content and total phenolic content on antioxidants activity of ethanol extracts from three cultivars of papaya leaves: 'Holland,' 'Khak Dam' and 'Red Lady.' All crude extracts were investigated to find antioxidant capacity in DPPH radical scavenging. The result indicated that the ethanol extract of ‘Red Lady’ papaya leaves exhibited the highest level of DPPH radical scavenging activity with the IC50 of 0.18 mg/mL, followed by the ‘Khak Dam’ and ‘Holland’ papaya leaves having an IC50 value of 0.24 and 0.44 mg/mL, respectively. The ethanol extract from 'Red Lady' papaya leaves showed the highest level of total flavonoid content (TFC) of 276.72 ± 1.04 µgQE/g DW and total phenolic content (TPC) of 169.85 ± 6.54 mgGAE/g DW. All three cultivars showed a distinctive correlation between IC50 and the content of both total flavonoid and total phenolic with a negative relationship of Pearson’s correlation of -0.922 and -0.940, respectively.

Summary Prunella vulgaris ( Labiatae family) or self-heal is traditionally used for different ailments such as eye pain and inflammation, headache, dizziness, sore throat and wound healing. Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of extracts (methanol, ethanol and aqueous) were determined by a spectrophotometer. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by micro broth dilution assay. The total phenolic content of P. vulgaris extracts were higher in aqueous extract (156.5 mg GAC/g) followed by ethanol extract and methanol extract. The TFC content of P. vulgaris methanol extract (82.8 mg QE/g) was higher than ethanol extract (22.7 mg QE/g) and aqueous extract (16.2 mg QE/g). The antimicrobial activity of methanol or ethanol extracts was higher than aqueous extract from P. vulgaris. The sensitivity of microorganisms to different extracts is related to type of pathogens. There is no positive relation between total phenolic content and its antimicrobial activity. Prunella vulgaris ethanolic extract as a source of phenolic and flavonoid contents can be used as an antimicrobial agent.

Allium jesdianum Boiss. & Buhse (Yazdi onion) belonging the family Alliaceae, is an endemic species of Iran that grows wild in the Zagros Mountains range, southwestern Iran. The indigenous people of Iran use the leaves and bulbs of A. jesdianum for the treatment of colds and kidney problems. The bulbs and leaves of various populations of the plant were collected from the alpine regions in Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari province, southwestern Iran. The total phenolic content of ethanol extract was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method, the antioxidant activity was evaluated measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the antibacterial activity of the extracts against four bacteria was determined by serial dilution assay. Results indicated that the total phenolic content in ethanol extracts from leaves and bulbs of A. jesdianum ranged between 27.83 to 98.23 mg GAE/g extract. A comparison of all plant extracts in the DPPH assay indicated that ethanol extracts from the populations of A. jesdianum leaves were the most effective free radical scavenging agents. The extracts indicated moderate-to-good inhibitory activities against four bacteria, especially against B. cereus. This finding suggests that the bulbs and leaves of A. jesdianum may be considered a natural source of antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

A free radical is one of the triggers of degenerative diseases that become the biggest cause of death. Excessive production of free radicals can be neutralized by antioxidant. Antioxidants can be generated from within the body (intracellular). One of them by the enzyme SOD (superoxide dismutase). However, when the production of free radicals exceeds the ability of intracellular antioxidants to neutralize it, antioxidants from outside (extracellular) is necessary. The ethanol extract of Artocarpus camansi leaves (EEACL) contains phenolic compounds which has very strong antioxidant activity based on in vitro study using the DPPH method, but the in vivo study about the total phenolic content effect of its leaves toward antioxidant activity has not been done. 25 mice were divided into 5 groups consisting of control group, a group was induced by stress and three groups were induced by stress, but given EEACL with each dose of 50 mg/kg bw, 100 mg/kg bw and 150 mg/kg bw. Inducing stress in the form of psychological stress was carried out for 7 days and continued with the EEACL administration for 7 days. The mice were dissected and the livers were isolated, then the liver morphological was examined using Hematoxyllin Eosin (HE) staining method and SOD level was examined with immunohistochemical staining method. The data were analyzed with One Way ANOVA and Duncan test using SPSS program version 19.0. Total phenolic content of EEACL is 235.03 ± 4.306 mg GAE/ g of sample. The average SOD levels in the control group is 94.05 %, stressed group is 55.94 %, stress with EEACL dose 50 mg/kg bw group is 58.40 %, stress with EEACL dose 100 mg/kg bw group is 79.68 %, stress with EEACL dose 150 mg/kg bw group is 80.90 %. Based on statistical result, SOD level increased along with the increase of EEACL dose, but not significantly (p < 0,05). Total phenolic content of EEACL has an influence to SOD levels. SOD level increased along with the increase of EEACL administration dose. Plant natural products have a long history of being a rich source of neuroactive drugs.The total phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of ethanol, chloroform and aqueous extracts of AlgerianMedicagoSativaL, leaves were measured to discover new potential sources of Algerian natural antioxidants and neuroactives. All extracts were non-neurotoxic up to 1 mg/ ml for 24 h exposure. The total phenolcontent of M.Sativa extracts ranged between 38 and 69 mg GAE per g extracts. All of the extracts displayed antioxidant capacityassessed by two methods, but at different levels depending on the concentration and the extraction solvent used. The overall antioxidant potency was in the order water > chloroform> ethanol extracts, and the phenolic content exhibited a positive correlation with the antioxidant activity of M. Sativa extracts.Despite a weaker antioxidant activity, the ethanol extract elicited a calcium spike and suppressed the KCl-induced depolarisation response in neurons, indicating effect on ligand-and/or voltage gated calcium channels. In contrast, the chloroform and water extractsdisplayed no apparent direct functional effects. In conclusion, the antioxidant and functional properties related to phenolic content of Algerian Medicago Sativa L. in water and ethanol extracts, respectively.

The crude ethanol extracts of four Indonesian medicinal plants namely Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.,Phyllanthus niruri Linn., Andrographis paniculata Ness., and Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. wereexamined for their antioxidant (radical scavenging) activity using 2, 2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radical and cytotoxicity using brine shrimp lethality test (BSLT). The total phenoliccontent was used the Folin-Ciocalteu method. IC50 values for DPPH radical scavenging activityranged from 14.5 to 178.5 μg/ml, with P. niruri having the lowest value and therefore the mostpotent, and C. aeruginosa having the highest value. LC50 values for BSLT ranged from 210.3 to593.2 μg/ml, with C. xanthorrhiza and A. paniculata having the lowest and highest values,respectively. The total phenolic content of the Indonesian plants ranged from 133.0 ±3.7 to863.3±54.7 mg tannic acid equivalent per 1 g extract, with C. aeruginosa and P. niruri having thelowest and highest values, respectively. A positive correlation between free radical scavengingactivity and the content of phenolic compounds was found in the four of Indonesian medicinal plants.

The genus Inula belongs to family Asteraceae and it is medicinally important because it possesses cytotoxic, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this research was to explore antioxidant and anti-urease activities of fifteen Inula taxa in Turkey. Ethanol extracts of Inula taxa were obtained by Soxhlet extraction. Antioxidant activity was determined through total antioxidant activity, total phenolic content and copper reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) analyses. The highest total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity were found in I. orientalis (158.54?0.002 ?g GAE/mL) and I. macrocephala (189.16?0.002 ?g AAE/mL). CUPRAC activity increases with the increasing concentration of the extracts and the standard. Moreover, all the tested plants exhibited better anti-urease activity than standard thiourea except for I. anatolica and I. thapsoides subsp. thapsoides. Results obtained from this study demonstrate that Inula species might be utilized as a probable natural source in the pharmaceutical and food industries but further and more specific studies are needed to determine active antioxidative and anti-urease compounds in the extracts.

Extraction is an important step in separating bioactive compounds from the plant. The selection of extraction technique is also important in the standardization of herbal products, for if not observed it can remove the desired soluble constituents. One of Indonesia’s endemic plants which have been proven to have an antioxidant activity is Salam leaves (Syzygium polyanthum). This study aims to determine the effect of extraction method on total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of S. polyanthum leaves by counteracting free radicals mechanism using DPPH. The S. polyanthum leaves were extracted by maceration, soxletation, and infusa methods, and tested for the total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity. The results showed that the total phenolic content of each method extration is different. The total of the phenolic content extraction by maceration, soxhlet, and infusa method respectively were 338.62±21.3; 227.72±21.6; and 144.48±8.2 mgGAE/g. The best antioxidant activity was maceration method with IC50 17.53±0.11 µg/mL followed by soxhlet and infusa which were 18.73±0.31 and 40.26±0.18 µg/mL. The research conclusion is that the extraction method has an effect on the total phenol and antioxidant activity of S. polyanthum leaves.

The present study aimed to study the anti-oxidant potential of isolated flavonoids from the ethanol extract (70%v/v) of Cassia tora leaves. Three flavonoids were isolated viz Luteolin-7-O-β-glucopyranoside (I), quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucuronide (II) and Formononetin-7-O-β-D-Glucoside (III) from the ethanol extract (70%v/v) of Cassia tora leaves in the previous study. A comprehensive study on the phytochemical contents - total phenolic content and flavonoid content was accessed using Folin-Denis and AlCl3 method respectively. The antioxidant potential of the samples was evaluated using inhibition of hydroxyl radical, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and nitric oxide scavenging methods. The total phenolic content and flavonoid content was found to be 18.60 % w/w and 9.5% w/w respectively. The IC50 values of ethanol extract against hydroxyl, DPPH and nitric oxide radical were found to be 270 µg/mL, 190 µg/mL and 130 µg/mL respectively. The radical scavenging activity of the isolated flavonoids decreased in the following order: quercetin (IC50 values 15, 14, 18 µg/mL) >formononetin (IC50 values 19, 21, 14 µg/mL) > luteolin (IC50 values 20, 23, 18 µg/mL) respectively.
