Supply chain covers a set of logistics components (procurement, storage, production, distribution...). In addition to the classical logistics components, the green supply chain integrates the environmental dimension in all these components. Nowadays modeling a supply chain by integrating environmental constraints has become an important metrics, in the logistic field for scientists, and also for industrialist in order to meet the customer needs, that has become more and more demanding in terms of respecting environment. This article aims to summarize some literature studies of the green supply chain and its modeling; afterwards we will expose an overview trough a comparative study about the used methods and approaches in the green supply chains modeling.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the keywords used in peer-reviewed literature on green supply chain management. Design/methodology/approach To determine the keywords that were used in this area, an analysis of 629 papers was conducted. The papers were identified through searches of 13 keywords on green supply chains. Trends in keyword usage were analyzed in detail focusing on examining variables such as the most frequently used journals/keywords, their frequencies, citation frequency and research contribution from different disciplines/countries. Findings A number of different terms have been used for research focused on the environmental impacts of supply chains, including green supply chains, sustainable supply chains, reverse logistics and closed-loop supply chains, among others. The analysis revealed that the intensity of research in this area has more than tripled in the past six years and that the most used keyword was “reverse logistics”. The use of the terms “green supply chains” and “sustainable supply chains” is increasing, and the use of “reverse logistics” is decreasing. Research limitations/implications The analysis is limited to 629 papers from the Scopus database during the period of 2007 and 2012. Originality/value The paper presents the first systematic analysis of keywords used in the literature on green supply chains. Given the broad array of terms used to refer to research in this area, this is a needed contribution. This work will help researchers in choosing keywords with high frequency and targeting journals for publishing their future work. The paper may also provide a basis for further work on developing consolidated definitions of terms focused on green supply chain management.

Supply chains and transport corridors have a significant impact on the socio-economic and environmental situation in the regions where the elements of the logistics infrastructure are located. The achievement of the goals of the concept of sustainable development in these regions is ensured, among other things, as a result of the formation of green supply chain management (GSCM), that is, as a result of changes in existing approaches to supply chain management. Analysis of the practice of supply chain management showed a wide variety of parameters and indicators of logistics flows used in decision-making at different stages of managing these flows. The authors propose a universal system of the logistic flows parameters and indicators for the GSCM, corresponding to the principles of the concept of sustainable development. A methodology for ranking indicators of logistics flows based on a combined DEMATEL-ANP method has been developed. The results of a case study on the evaluation of logistics flows for the GSCM are presented. The ranks of logistics flow indicators obtained in the study are proposed to be used in GSCM to adjust of the logistics flows actual parameters to achieve the goals of the concept of sustainable development.

PurposeThe increasing rate of environmental concern and awareness by society has attracted attention from researchers and organisations to consider how to proceed towards green supply chains. The purpose of this paper is to identify operational bottlenecks in the multi-tier supply chain to guide organisations towards where to concentrate their efforts to address their supply chain environmental challenges.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents a literature review identifying green supply chain challenges of multi-tier supply chains. Following the literature review is a case study of the Ethiopian health supply chain with 11 interviews, 11 international and 6 national surveys and data from public health information systems. An analysis based on multi-tier supply chain modelling is used to identify environmental supply chain bottlenecks.FindingsThis research found that the supply chain actors face severe challenges towards enhanced green supply chain performance mainly because of poor inventory management (IN), inefficient tracking and tracing (TR) and fake or sub-standard products in the supply chain, especially counterfeit medicines (CO). Specific environmental bottlenecks within each of the challenge areas IN, TR and CO where identified serving as recommendations for where supply chain actors should focus their work towards greener supply chains.Research limitations/implicationsThe data come from participants in a single country, Ethiopia; although the supply chain challenges are common for developing countries in general.Practical implicationsThis research presents a modelling approach to identify supply chain activities considered as environmental bottlenecks in multi-tier supply chains. The environmental bottlenecks pinpoint supply chain activities to focus on for a transition towards green supply chains for manufacturers, public and private health organisations, hospitals and health care units.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the literature on GSCM by developing a multi-tier modelling approach for identifying environmental supply chain bottlenecks. The applicability of the model is demonstrated by the identification of environmental bottlenecks in a healthcare supply chain supporting decisions on what challenges a green supply chain strategy should address. It serves as a basis for future research on where to implement GSCM practices in supply chains (SCs).

Supply chain flexibility is an important operations strategy dimension for organizations to achieve and maintain competitive advantage. With rising greener customer expectations and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, green supply chains are now viewed as another competitive weapon. Green supply chains are characterized by higher complexity and turbulence. Green supply chain flexibility can aid organizations function in this complex and uncertain environment, yet investigation into this area is very limited. This paper aims contribute to this field by investigating green supply chain flexibility achievement through information systems. This paper introduces a green supply chain flexibility matrix framework. Given the large data needs, as described in the matrix, a novel probability evaluation methodology that can help predict rankings of projects and programs is introduced. The methodology extends a TOPSIS based three-parameter interval grey number (TpGN) approach by incorporating neighborhood rough set theory (RST) to evaluate IS programs’ green flexibility support capability. The results of this methodology are more objective and effective for two reasons. (1) The results are predictive rankings based on probability degree instead of the fixed deterministic ranks. (2) Neighborhood rough set theory used in this study can limit loss of information when compared to rough set theory, yet still simplify extensive data sets. This paper also identifies study limitations and future research directions for green supply chain flexibility.

This paper aims at identifying the factors affecting green supply chain in agriculture in Vietnam currently. The literature indicates 14 factors affecting green supply chains in agriculture including: (i) manager commitment, (ii) IT system, (iii) new technology, (iv) organizational culture, (v) HR quality, (vi) energy & waste management, (vii) market & competition, (viii) political supports, (ix) knowledge & experience, (x) actors’ participation, (xi) costs, (xii) suppliers, (xiii) logistics management, and (xiv) consumer awareness. Our regression model with 14 independent variables was established to determine the factors affecting the success of green supply chains in Vietnam agriculture. The regression results show six factors affecting significantly and positively green supply chain in agriculture in Vietnam, including: (i) manager commitment, (ii) new technology, (iii) HR quality, (iv) knowledge & experience, (v) logistic management, and (vi) consumer awareness. Hence, the paper suggests some recommendations to Vietnam firms and State for improving green supply chain in agriculture.

Because of the eco-consciousness and the environmental protection companies become ’green’, therefore many green supply chains are realized in the business sphere. Companies of green supply chain take care on the environmental protection. These companies try to decrease the pollution, so they implement some eco-conscious processes. The green supply chains contain these companies. The biggest problem is the coordination of these chains. Nowadays, supply chains have many members, so the cooperation is getting more and more difficult. It could be a potential good solution, if the chain members use the different contract types to coordinate the chain. Contract tries to handle the inequality between the chain members and gives a framework to the cooperation of chain members. This paper introduces the wholesale pricing contract, which can be used in the case of green supply chain and its different settings effectively. The wholesale pricing contract is one of the traditional contract types but it produces different performance in the case of centralized and decentralized setting. Centralized setting has a chain leader – this member operates and coordinates the whole chain and defines common goals for the members. In decentralized setting the members define their own goals and they act in accordance with their own interest. A simulation with numerical example is also included to represent the difference between the two settings.

Having become conscious about the importance of the environment much more than past nowadays, the environmentally benign applications also called as green applications have increased tremendously in the recent years. Although there are specific and individual studies in various fields from design of product to final delivery of it, there is a need to handle the subject as a whole and construct green supply chains. Before constructing a green supply chain, the first step is to assess the existing structure from the viewpoint of greenness. Hence, it is important to develop a systematic assessment approach and this study aims to analyze the existing literature by mainly clarifying the criteria and methods used in such assessment systems and provide directions for future studies. Moreover, this study also aims to provide a base for the academics and practitioners that are willing to develop a greenness assessment methodology for supply chains. For this aim, numerous studies have been analyzed under a proposed structure including four sub-sections which consist of a green supply chain.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion concerning how supply chains have evolved through the introduction of environmental concerns into the managerial field.Design/methodology/approach – The authors have reviewed several of the most relevant research results regarding Green Supply Chains and analyzed the status of cooperation among authors and countries.Findings – The authors set a discussion on the concept of the Green Supply Chain, along with its practices, drivers, motivations and barriers, presenting a modern review regarding the cooperation network among the mains authors and countries.Originality/value – Although research regarding Green Supply Chains has been intensively developed recently, there are several unexplored research avenues in which practitioners and scholars could advance. In order to support future studies concerning Green Supply Chains, ten research questions were elaborated.

Fierce competition in the global markets forced companies to improve the design and management of supply chains, because companies are always looking for more profit and higher customer satisfaction. The emergence of the green supply chain is one of the most important developments of the last decade. It provides an opportunity for companies to adjust their supply chains according to environmental goals and sustainability. The integrated production-inventory-routing is a new field that aims to optimize these three decision-making levels. It can be described as follow: a factory produces one or more products, and sells them to several customers (by direct delivery or a specific customer chain). The current study aims to model a production-inventory-routing system using a system dynamics approach to design a green supply chain under uncertain conditions. For this purpose, first, the association between selected variables was determined. Then, the proposed model was validated. Finally, to identify variables with the highest influence, four scenarios were developed. The results indicated that minimum total transportation cost, the total warehouse capacity of the supply chain, and the maximum production rate are the most influential strategies to achieve ideal condition.
