This publication contains the reflections and proposals made within the framework of the 2018–2019 University of Zaragoza Master of Architecture programme. Continuing on from the work of previous years on other districts of the city of Zaragoza we refer to as ‘inner peripheries’, particularly those com- prising the so-called ‘Orla Este’ (‘eastern fringe’) – the neighbourhoods of San José and Las Fuentes – this time the team of students and teaching staff involved turned their focus to the Torrero-La Paz dis- trict. This area of the city has problems similar to those previously studied, as they are distinguished by depopulation and ageing, in other words, the tendency to lose inhabitants, particularly younger generations. Moreover, its physical structure is characterised by a congested network of streets, high population density, a scarcity of green spaces and facilities, and the poor design of existing public spaces and deficiencies in the standards of construction of many of its buildings. All of this is reflec- ted in the proliferation of urban fabrics in the process of becoming obsolete, which may lead to the appearance of pockets of vulnerability. Nonetheless, the diagnostic exercises undertaken have also allowed the potential of the district to be identified. This publication contains the proposals for urban renewal and building restoration based on the interventions to improve public spaces and dwellings, in addition to facilities, traffic management and public parking spaces. In a nutshell, all those aspects that we can include within the broad concept of urban renewal and with the aim of progressing towards a much-improved neighbourhood. The publication of this book was made possible by the collaboration agreement between Zaragoza City Council, through Zaragoza Vivienda, and the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Zaragoza.

The City of Copenhagen aims to become the first carbon neutral capital in the world by 2025. Ten per cent of the total CO2-reduction target is to be achieved through energy retrofitting of existing buildings in the city. This article reports from an action research study in the urban renewal section in Copenhagen City Council where planners struggle to promote more and better energy retrofitting projects in the urban renewal scheme. The study finds that planners in fact approach green retrofitting as a ‘wicked problem’ that requires new solution strategies targeting the complexity of developing new retrofitting standards and solutions in the existing urban renewal framework. The analysis shows how planners’ strategic responses are challenged by competing worldviews concerning the role of urban renewal and the problems and potentials of green retrofitting in practice.

ABSTRAK. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana makna ataupun nilai dari Taman Budaya Yogyakarta bagi masyarakat mengingat keberadaannya sebagai pusat kesenian dan kebudayaan di Yogyakarta. Setiap ruang publik seharusnya tidak hanya hadir secara fisik akan tetapi dapat memberi rasa atau makna tersendiri bagi kota (“places” matter most), bagaimana suatu ruang publik dapat memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat kota akan adanya sebuah wadah interaksi sosial antar masyarakat. Taman Budaya Yogyakarta merupakan salah satu ruang publik yang dijadikan masyarakat sebagai tempat berekreasi serta aktivitas seni dan kebudayaan. Taman Budaya Yogyakarta atau yang dulu disebut dengan Purna Budaya, pertama kali dibangun pada tanggal 11 Maret 1977 di daerah kawasan Universitas Gadjah Mada. Taman Budaya dibangun kembali pada tahun 2002 di Kawasan Gondomanan. Metode yang digunakan adalah dengan melakukan wawancara secara online melalui aplikasi WhatsApp serta metode studi pustaka. Hasilnya, diketahui bahwa Taman Budaya Yogyakarta memiliki makna kultural, makna sosial (interaksi individu dengan lingkungannya), makna pentingnya relasi antar manusia, dan memiliki makna harmonisasi kehidupan sosial dan budaya. Makna suatu ruang publik bisa terbentuk dari tatanan serta keadaaan fisik ruangnya. Kata kunci: Makna, Ruang Terbuka Publik, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta ABSTRACT. This study aims to find out how the meaning or value of the Taman Budaya Yogyakarta for the community, given its existence as a centre for arts and culture in Yogyakarta. Every public space should not only be physically present but can give a sense or meaning to the city ("place" matter most), how public space can meet the needs of the city community for a place of social interaction between communities. Taman Budaya Yogyakarta is one of the public spaces used by the community as a place of recreation and artistic and cultural activities. Taman Budaya Yogyakarta or formerly called Purna Budaya was first built on March 11, 1977, in the area of Gadjah Mada University. The Cultural Park was rebuilt in 2002 in the Gondomanan Region. The method used is to conduct online interviews through the WhatsApp application and literature study method. As a result, it is known that the Taman Budaya Yogyakarta has a cultural meaning, a social meaning (the interaction of individuals with their environment), the importance of relationships between people, and meaning of harmony in social and cultural life. The purpose of this article is to rescue, through documentary re- search, the establishment of the Brazilian Institute of Architects in Sa?o Paulo (IAB/SP) and the construction of its headquarters in the city, one of the leading examples of modern architecture, as well as the integration of architecture and other arts. First located in the basement of a modern building called Esther, its design, ob- ject of a contest, situated in the corner of Bento Freitas and Gene- ral Jardim Street, at Vila Buarque, had as winners and authors of the nal project the architects Abelardo Reidy de Souza, Galiano Ciampaglia, He?lio Queiroz Duarte, Jacob Ruchti, Miguel Forte, Rino Levi, Roberto de Cerqueira Ce?sar and Zenon Lotufo. It was built in the 1950’s, in a region that became a new urban center of cultural and artistic activities with new museums, libraries, cinemas, thea- ters, art galleries and bookshops and IAB/SP joined these spaces. As the building became part of a network of sociability among architects and other artists, it was possible to spread the values of the architects’ profession. Many politicians, young students, tea- chers, intellectuals and artists used and visited the building during exhibitions, music auditions, lectures and other events promoted by the Institute. Moreover, as a space of ideological exchanges, in 1964 with the Military Coup it became a symbolic site of struggle for freedom. Protected by the State Heritage body – CONDEPHAAT (Council for the Defense of the Historical, Archeological, Artistic and Touristic Heritage) in 2020, and in 2015 by CONPRESP (Sa?o Paulo City Council for the Preservation of Historical, Cultural and Environmental Patrimony) and IPHAN (Institute of National His- torical and Artistic Heritage), its restoration process predicted beyond the recovery of the physical structure of the building, the fac?ade restoration and the improvements in the use of some spa- ces. The renovation started and was partially completed, focusing on the structure of the external marquise and the reestablishment of the events space of the Institute, that returned to host events. Gradually, the street in which it is located has resumed its centra- lizing process of activities carried out by architects in the region. New young architects chose the same street for their o ces and a specialized architecture bookstore was installed on the ground oor of IAB/SP building. These spaces were a de nite boost to the resumption of the IAB/SP building as an important model of modern architecture in Sa?o Paulo, a local memory space and re- presentative of this professional segment.

Place branding is a network of associations in the consumer’s mind, based on the visual, verbal, and behavioral expression of a place. Food can be an important tool to summarize it as it is part of the culture of a city and its symbolic capital. Food is imaginary, a ritual and a social construction. This paper aims to explore a ritual that has turned into one of the brands of Lisbon in the past few years. The fresh sardines barbecued out of doors, during Saint Anthony’s festival, has become a symbol that can be found on t-shirts, magnets and all kinds of souvenirs. Over the year, tourists can buy sardine shaped objects in very cheap stores to luxurious shops. There is even a whole boutique dedicated to the fish: “The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines” and an annual competition promoted by the city council to choose the five most emblematic designs of sardines. In order to analyze the Sardine phenomenon from a city branding point of view, the objective of this paper is to comprehend what associations are made by foreigners when they are outside of Lisbon. As a methodological procedure five design sardines, were used of last year to questioning to which city they relate them in interviews carried in Madrid, Lyon, Rome and London. Upon completion of the analysis, the results of the city branding strategy adopted by the city council to promote the sardines as the official symbol of Lisbon is seen as a Folkmarketing action. The effects are positive, but still quite local. On the other hand, significant participation of the Lisbon´s dwellers in the Sardine Contest was observed, which seems to be a good way to promote the city identity and pride in their best ambassador: the citizens.


This article analyzes the main problems of urban public spaces, because today public spaces can determine the future of cities. It is noted that parks are multifunctional public spaces in the urban environment, as they are an important element of the citywide system of landscaping and recreation, perform health, cultural, educational, aesthetic and environmental functions. The article notes that the need for easily accessible and well-maintained urban parks remains, however, the state of parks in many cities of Russia remains unsatisfactory, requiring reconstruction. A brief historical background of the Park of Culture and Rest of the Soviet period in Omsk is expounded, the analysis of the existing territory of the Park is presented. It is revealed that the Park, being the largest public space in Omsk, does not meet the requirements of modern urbanism, although it represents a great potential for designing the space for the purpose of recreation of citizens. Performed functional zoning scheme of the territory of the Park in question, where its division into functional areas destined for active recreational users of the Park is presented, considered the interests of senior citizens, people with limited mobility, etc. Reconstruction of Parks of the Soviet period can provide the city with additional recreational opportunities, as well as increase its tourist attractiveness.

How did Edinburgh become ‘festival city’? Despite appearances, it was not always so, and it acquired the accolade by happenstance; in the view of one observer, a ‘strange amalgam of cultural banditry, civic enterprise and idealism’. The official Festival's survival was down to the City Council, and it was funded almost entirely by public bodies. This was the central structure around which The Fringe developed, and The Traverse prospered, along with smaller festivals and events to become Festival City. The story sheds considerable light on how Edinburgh ‘works’, its strengths and weaknesses combined.

Broadly speaking, this paper discusses the phenomenon of murals that are now spread in Yogyakarta Special Region, especially the city of Yogyakarta. Mural painting is an art with a media wall that has the elements of communication, so the mural is also referred to as the art of visual communication. Media is a media wall closest to the community, because the distance between the media with the audience is not limited by anything, direct and open, so the mural is often used as media to convey ideas, the idea of ??community, also called the media the voice of the people. Location of mural art in situations of public spatial proved inviting the owners of capital to use such means, in this case is the mural. Manufacturers of various products began racing the race to put on this wall media, as time goes by without realizing the essence of the actual mural art was forced to turn to the commercial essence, the only benefit some parties only, the power of public spaces gradually occupied by the owners of capital, they hopes that the community can view the contents of messages and can obtain information for the products offered. it brings motivation and cognitive and affective simultaneously in the community.Keywords: Mural, Public Space, and Society.

This study was conducted to determine the level of academic quality compliance of public secondary high schools and its predictors as input to strengthen institutional profiling. The respondents of the study were 167 teachers and school managers in (9) public secondary junior high schools in the City Schools Division of San Jose del Monte Bulacan for the School Year 2017-2018. The descriptive research design was used employing the predictive technique in determining the influence of respondents’ profile, institutions’ profile variables and the management capability factors as the academic quality compliance of the schools. The findings revealed that the schools’ academic quality compliance on leadership and governance is predicted by the NAT (Beta = .431), promotion rate (Beta= 1.170), and enrollment rate (Beta = .747).  The management capability on quality instruction predicts the schools’ academic quality compliance on curriculum and learning (Beta = .971) and the academic quality compliance on accountability and continuous improvement is influenced by the management capability on quality instruction. The promotion rate of the school predicts the academic quality compliance of the school in the area of management of resources (Beta =.671). The hypothesis stating that the respondent's profile, institutional profile, and management capability, singly or combination predict the schools' academic quality compliance is partly sustained.

In the recent five years, City parks have been developing rapidly in urban cities in Indonesia. Built in 2007, Taman Gajah Tunggal is one of the city parks located in Tangerang. This park is situated at The Center of Tangerang City on the edge of Cisadane River. Like many public spaces in Indonesia, this park has littering issues by visitors’ lack of care. This re- search is offered to develop social marketing by using a digital game for gaining awareness of Taman Gajah Tunggal’s visitors age 17-30 years old about littering issues. This paper focused on developing the prototyping process in iteration design method by using a digital game to suggest possibilities design for future development interactive installation design in public space which can bring a new experience.
