This paper presents the design of a bidirectional same-sense circularly polarized (CP) antenna that uses metasurfaces. The antenna consists of two metasurfaces, each comprising an array of 2 × 4 corner truncated patches placed back-to-back on the top and bottom of the antenna. In addition, a ground plane with an etched slot is sandwiched between the substrates at the front and back, and the feed line is a 50 Ω coplanar waveguide. The antenna radiates same-sense right-handed CP waves in both the front and back directions and has overall dimensions of 48 mm × 24 mm × 3.048 mm (0.91λo × 0.45λo × 0.05λo at 5.7 GHz). The measured reflection coefficient for |S11| < -10 dB yields an impedance bandwidth of 5.21–6.26 GHz (18.4%) and an axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 5.36–6 GHz (11.2%) for both front and back directions. The antenna gain is 3–5.29 dBic for both directions and has a radiation efficiency of >96% within its AR bandwidth.

Abstract A novel design of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed antenna array with circular polarization (CP) and a high front-to-back ratio is described. The proposed CP array is achieved by using a compact CPW–slotline transition network etched in the ground plane. The measured results show that this kind of feeding method can improve the impedance bandwidth, as well as the axial ratio bandwidth of the CP antenna array and provide adequate gain. The proposed array can achieve a 6.08% impedance bandwidth and a 4.10% CP bandwidth. Details of the antenna design and experimental results are presented and discussed.

A wideband coplanar waveguide (CPW) antenna with circular polarization characteristics using modified ground slot is studied in this work. Proposed design incorporates a hexagonal slot instead of rectangular slot, accounting for enhanced impedance matching. This ground slot is energized by a 50Ω feed line, resulting in excitation of two orthogonal phase quadrature modes (even-odd modes). Thus, fulfilling the essential criteria required for realizing circular polarization. A narrow horizontal slit (lg) is embedded in the ground plane at immediate left of feed line, accounting for wideband characteristics. 10dB impedance bandwidth of proposed antenna extends from 2.65- 5.60 GHz, while 3dB axial ratio bandwidth extends from 3.90- 5.80 GHz. Hence, overlapping bandwidth of proposed antenna extends from 3.90 - 5.60 GHz. RHCP characteristics with monopole radiation pattern makes proposed antenna useful for WLAN, radio navigation and radiolocation applications.

AbstractIn this paper, an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) metasurface (MS) superstrate-based circularly polarized antenna for the WiMAX (3.5 GHz) band is proposed. The proposed structure comprises a 2 × 2 slot-loaded rectangular patch MS array that can be perceived as a polarization-dependent EBG MS superstrate. Furthermore, to achieve circular polarization, the proposed antenna has an inclined coupling slot onto the ground with a conventional coplanar waveguide feed line. The proposed antenna has a compact structure with a low profile of 0.037λ0 (λ0 stands for the free-space wavelength at 3.48 GHz) and a ground size of 30 × 30 mm2. The measured results show that the −10 dB impedance bandwidth for the proposed antenna is 34.6% and the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth is 6.8% with a peak gain of 3.91 dBi in the desired operating band. Good agreement between the simulated and the measured results verifies the performance of the proposed antenna.

Abstract A new circularly polarized (CP) slot antenna with a small gap and a stick-shaped shorted strip is presented. The proposed antenna has a sufficient bandwidth for ultrahigh frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader applications. The antenna structure consists of a rectangular slot with a small gap, a stick-shaped shorted strip and a 50 Ω coplanar waveguide (CPW) feedline with an asymmetrical ground plane. By using the stick -shaped shorted strip to disturb magnetic current distribution on the slot, the CP radiation can be generated. The measured results demonstrate that the proposed antenna can reach a 10 dB return loss impedance bandwidth of 14.1 % (894–1030 MHz) and a 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 6.4 % (910–970 MHz). The whole antenna size is 80 × 80 × 1.6 mm3.

AbstractThe paper presents a new coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed rectangular patch antenna with a square-shaped ground plane that can be employed in modern advanced navigation systems. For realizing broad impedance bandwidth in the proposed antenna, a wide slot is introduced in the square ground plane and the rectangular patch is shifted toward the left edge of the ground surface. In addition, by means of introducing square-shaped stubs near the left and right edge of the ground plane, the circular polarization is achieved at L1, L2, and L5 satellite bands. As per the simulation results, the proposed antenna provides a wide impedance bandwidth (S11<−10 dB) of 123% (1.12–4.72 GHz) and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 11% (1.15–1.29 GHz) and 18% (1.5–1.8 GHz) suitable for multipurpose wireless applications. The designed single feed circularly polarized antenna is low profile, small size, light weight and easily integrable with other high-frequency communication devices. To validate radiation performance of the proposed structure, the antenna is fabricated and integrated with the commercially available Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and it is found that the measured values are in close agreement with the desired results.

Abstract A simple and compact circularly polarized broadband circular slot antenna is proposed for WLAN/WiMAX/DBS applications. The main objective of this work is to design a microstrip line fed broadband circularly polarized antenna that is achieved by introducing an asymmetric perturbation over the circular slot onto the ground plane. A broad axial ratio bandwidth is achieved by using a small circular segment cut into the circular slotted ground and by adding a short stub on the feedline. To achieve a broad impedance bandwidth, a horizontal strip onto the slotted ground is placed just above the feed line on the opposite side. The proposed antenna is fabricated with an overall dimension of 20 × 20 × 1.6 mm3 (0.34λ o × 0.34λ o × 0.03λ o, where λ o represents the free-space wavelength at the center operating frequency). It is found that the impedance bandwidth of 75.82% ranges from 3.21 to 7.13 GHz and the 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth reaches 54.27% from 3.8 to 6.6 GHz. Throughout this paper, the improvement and validation process of the proposed antenna outcomes to accomplish desired characteristics are discussed.

Abstract A circularly polarized ring cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (ring-CDRA) of wideband impedance bandwidth is presented in this article. The proposed ring CDRA consist of an inverted rectangular (tilted rectangular) shaped aperture and inverted L-shaped slotted microstrip feed line. The tilted rectangular shaped aperture and inverted L-shaped microstrip feed line generate two-hybrid mode HEM11δ and HEM12δ while ring CDRA and slotted microstrip feed line are used for the enhancement of impedance bandwidth. The proposed ring CDRA is resonating between 6.08 and 12.2 GHz with 66.95% (6120 MHz) impedance bandwidth. The axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 6.99% (780 MHz) is obtained between 10.76 and 11.54 GHz with a minimum AR value of 0.2 dB at a frequency of 11 GHz. The proposed geometry of ring CDRA has been validated with measurement performed by VNA and anechoic chamber. The operating range of the proposed radiator is useful for different applications in X-band.

Abstract Design of single-feed circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna is proposed in this article. The design employs the concept of E-shape patch with inclined fractal defected ground structure (IFDGS), which can improve the impedance bandwidth, gain, and axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. The excellent enhanced impedance bandwidth, axial ratio bandwidth, and gain are achieved by an inclined E-shaped fractal etched on the ground plane. The parameter studies of the E-shaped IFDGS are given to illustrate the way to obtain CP radiation. The third iterative IFDGS is fabricated on easily available FR4 substrate with a size of 0.494 λ0 × 0.494 λ0 × 0.019 λ0 (λ0 is the wavelength in free space at 3.624 GHz). The measured results verify the simulated results and show good agreement. The proposed antenna shows an impedance bandwidth of 12.7% at a centre frequency of 3.47 GHz and 3-dB AR bandwidth for this band is 2.39% at a centre frequency of 3.626 GHz. The measured peak gain for the proposed antenna is found as 8.1 dBi. The proposed antenna can be suitable for mobile WIMAX operation (IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard), wireless communication in CA-band and FCC.

A compact circularly polarized antenna with wide axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) using quasi-self-complementary (QSC) structure is presented. A 3-dB ARBW is achieved by shortening the ground plane of the QSC structure. Furthermore, the wide ARBW is obtained by the introduction of a stepped stub in the extended ground plane of the QSC structure. The antenna is fabricated on a FR4 substrate with the overall dimensions of 25 mm × 22 mm × 0.8 mm. The proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 5.9 GHz (2.4–8.3 GHz, 110%) and 3 dB ARBW of 1.6 GHz (2.4–4 GHz, 50%). A peak gain of 1–3 dBi is observed within the 3 dB ARBW.
