The focus of this paper is to propose an evaluation tool to assess the teaching-learning process of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) to hearing students in Higher Education. The current Brazilian laws dealing with the accessibility of the deaf and the teaching of Libras will be concisely posited and argued, and after that an overview on linguistic aspects of Libras will be highlighted prior to discussing the teaching of this language as a Second Language (L2). Also, it will be discussed briefly the relevance of using strategies to Libras teaching as L2 and then the proposal to evaluate teaching and learning processes of the language at stake will be finally described. Grammar is one of important aspects of a language that makes the language learnable and teachable. The teaching of grammar, especially foreign language grammar, needs a serious attention from the teachers and related institutions. Specifically in universities, the teaching of English grammar should provide the students with theoretical concepts of the English grammar and opportunity to use the concepts in their communication. The grammar teaching should also offers suitable assignments by which they may test their language hypothesis. To establish and develop the students’ knowledge about the English grammar, the use of students’ mother tongue as an instructional language in the classroom was considered effective. However, an experimental research conducted by Refnita (2006) showed that the use of Bahasa Indonesia as an instructional language of Grammar I subject was not more effective than the use of English. It is true that bahasa Indonesia is not the students’ mother tongues, but they have mastered it as almost perfectly as their mother tongues. That’s why in her research bahasa Indonesia was considered similar with the students’ mother tongues. The rejection of the proposed research hypothesis implied that pedagogical and psychological factors should be taken into account in the teaching-learning process because the success of learning English grammar does not solely depend upon the instructional language. Further analysis of the research result reflected that the students’ motivation and learning readiness even more determined the success of learning Grammar I. In relation with this phenomenon, the present article, which is based on and developed from the research result, will discuss further the pedagogical and psychological reflections of grammar teaching that need to be considered in the teaching-learning process of English grammar at universities in addition to the use of instructional language.

Palabras clave: Entorno virtual de aprendizaje, Inglés, Proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, TIC   ABSTRACT   The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has highlighted since 1948 the importance of learning a second language because of its professional, social, cultural, academic, and even personal potentials. Understanding that it moves towards a technological society, the processes of teaching and learning break the traditional schemes and incorporate new virtual learning environments that allow the implementation of technologies. By learning a foreign language, it tends to “pass” in somehow the knowledge about the structures and features of the mother tongue into the foreign language. This influence of the mother tongue on the foreign language is called “transfer” which often impedes production in the second language. The purpose of this research is to create a virtual learning environment in the English modules using Moodle for 114 UNEMI students of Health and Engineering Sciences, who are considered part of the generation “Y” through a single, factual and intrinsic case study, with a descriptive, heuristic and inductive level. The results of this research determined that the use of ICT tools when learning a second language presents greater opportunities for the teacher and students because they both can be separated with respect to the synchrony and this is not an obstacle, so learning is conducted with success; this support tool helps the acquired knowledge to become perfect with practice.   Key words: Virtual Learning Environment, English, teaching-learning process, ICT   Recibido: febrero de 2015Aprobado: abril de 2015

Abstract – To connect with the students of the 21st century, lecturers must understand their characteristics and know how to motivate them. Traditional approach, i.e., lecture-based approach, is usually not an effective approach in this century. At the School of Information Technology (SIT), we bring in stakeholders in education, such as alumni and professionals to help us in the teaching-learning process. It shows that stakeholder involvement in teaching and learning complements the traditional approach in education.

The second language can be defined as any other language which is learned or acquired after their first language or their mother tongue. Learning or acquiring a second language can be a difficult task for anybody that wishes to speak or write in a language other than their first language. Teachers should have the basic knowledge of second language acquisition theories to provide a comprehensive teaching and learning environment to students. One of the most applied and well-accepted theories is Stephen’s Krashen’s theory of second language acquisition. The present study was carried out as an observation on students to address the importance of Krashen’s Monitor Model and the Natural Approach in the stages of second language development to ensure effective teaching of the second language. The findings show that the cause of the input factor should be taken into consideration when teaching a second language/foreign language. The findings also indicated that cooperative learning can be a good method for students to get comprehensible input from their classmates.

In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, most of the higher education institutions (HEIs) across the globe have replaced conventional teaching with online teaching. However, the technological preparedness of countries of varied nature differs significantly. In this context, the purpose of the study is to answer the following research question: how are the HEIs mitigating the difficulties that have resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic to facilitate online teaching–learning process? The study is carried out based on a cross-sectional study from 281 academic professionals who are employed in HEIs in India and Ethiopia. The findings from this comparative study highlight that digital divide and lack of institutional preparedness are found to be major problems that constrained the effective implementation of online teaching/learning. Besides, this study also found that training programmes for the faculty members to utilize web resources and facilitate online teaching were found to be limited in both the countries. The article concludes by offering suggestions and policy advice to minimize the digital divide and for successful implementation of online teaching in HEIs.
