The article summarizes a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results of a questionnaire survey that took place at the Faculty of Economics, Technical University of Liberec in May 2021. The exceptional situation that occurred during the coronavirus pandemic forced all academic personnel to transfer their teaching to online platforms. Obviously, such a shift caused changes not only in the nature of teaching and syllabi but also in communication with students as well as the relations between students and academic workers. The main goal of this research was to find out how—or whether—the teachers modified their syllabi, or course plans, and adapted them to teaching in the online environment, and to what extent. The questionnaire further examined the teachers’ views on online teaching, its negative and positive aspects, and the tools that the academic workers have used most or least in online teaching. The research results primarily map the current situation at the Faculty of Economics and bring a reflection concerning other possibilities that online teaching offers and, of course, concerning also its pitfalls.

In Thus Spoke Zarathustra Nietzsche explores the nature of teaching and learning and concludes that a teacher can do more harm than good in a student's life if she allows her students to become her ‘disciples’. A disciple assigns too much authority to a teacher and thus loses the ability to think independently; this is what Zarathustra means when he warns his students, ‘Beware that you are not killed by a statue!’ In this article I argue that Zarathustra's solution to this problem is to undermine his own authority by performing several different variations of the Liar's Paradox in parts 2 and 3 of Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

This paper examines ICT policy in education with a particular focus on teachers’ engagement in emergent remote teaching (ERT) during the initial COVID-19 school closure in South Korea. It involves a documentary analysis of newspaper articles on “starting school online” from the highest read daily newspapers published in South Korea, through which three issues regarding teachers and teaching are identified: teachers’ digital competency, teachers’ sense of professional identity, and the revalorisation of the teacher role. Discussion of the three issues points to the need to reflect on and rethink the government’s policies for ICT in education. This paper provides an overview of the ICT policies to show their overall inadequacy with respect to providing teachers with the necessary training and framework for technology-related professional development. It highlights the need to understand the changing nature of teaching and learning in a digital education environment and it suggests a possible redesign of the education and training provisions to teachers to support their professional competency in the digital age.

In the wake of these researches, the present study aims to reflect on the role of the teacher in the current context, pointing to his excessive overload of professional work and, at the same time, on coping with situations of devaluation, lack of recognition and disrespect for teaching work. in society. The sewing of the presented ideas starts from a bibliographical and exploratory study of qualitative nature, built in the light of Althusser (1985), Arroyo (2000), Bastos (2009), Bourdieu (2004), Candau (2014), Chizzotti; Almeida (2019), Diniz-Pereira (2011), Enguita (1991), Gasparini, Barreto e Assunção (2005), Libâneo (2018), Nóvoa (1995, 2009, 2017), Pimenta (2009), Tardif e Lessard (2005), among others. In a metaphorical allusion to the song 'A carne', immortalized in the voice of Elza Soares, with the verse 'the cheapest meat on the market is black meat', in which teaching work is associated with being the 'heaviest on the market', excessive demands and little recognition and appreciation. Similar to a domino effect, the way the figure of the teacher has been treated in his path of insertion in the Brazilian school and educational culture; triggers a series of issues, such as: i) the devaluation of their work; ii) the overload of duties assigned to him; iii) health problems; iv) an identity crisis. A possible way to face and overcome this crisis is to restructure the social imaginary about teaching work, in order to regain its cultural and professional survival; and, with that, make 'the teaching load' lighter in the current job market. Keywords: Teaching work. A comparison of case studies of two elementary schools in the United States, in two different Library Power project sites, reveals that the implementation of a new instructional approach such as inquiry-based learning is a complex and multifaceted endeavour. Provision of enhanced collections, improved facilities, full time librarians, flexible scheduling, and professional support was not sufficient for the transformation of instructional practice. Although the two schools appeared to have benefited from similar improvements in resources, only one of the schools demonstrated the transformation in instructional practice that is essential to improved student learning. The roots of this difference appeared to lie in the beliefs held by educators in the two schools about the nature of children, the nature of learning, and the nature of teaching.

This qualitative case study explored the nature of teaching for transfer of one EAP writing teacher who taught an undergraduate-level academic writing course in the US. The findings of this study revealed that the teacher believed in the importance of teaching for transfer and addressed various dimensions of transfer, such as (a) transfer between reading and writing, (b) transfer across major writing tasks, and (c) transfer beyond a course. However, in terms of actual instructional practices, the teacher was not yet fully prepared to handle the various dimensions of transfer in an effective way. Implications for EAP writing teachers are discussed.
