This article analyses the research question of how learners utilize hand-held mobile technology for learning of children. Mobile technology is an „anywhere, anytime”, creative learning tool that has the potential to support the development of self-regulated learners. The article examines user defined utilization of the mobile technology in elementary education settings: a comprehensive examination of the integration of digital mobile technology in an elementary school. Specific student use, independent of prescribed teacher use, is considered in examining the self-regulated learning supported by the mobile technology.

The aim of the intervention based on the self-regulation theory by Zimmerman (2000) was to promote a powerful learning environment for supporting self-regulated learning by using learning materials. In the study, primary school teachers were asked to implement specific learning materials into their regular mathematics lessons in grade four. These learning materials focused on particular (meta)cognitive and motivational components of self-regulated learning and were subdivided into six units, with which the students of the experimental group were asked to deal with on a weekly basis. The evaluation was based on a quasiexperimental pre-/postcontrol-group design combined with a time series design. Altogether, 135 fourth graders participated in the study. The intervention was evaluated by a self-regulated learning questionnaire, mathematics test, and process data gathered through structured learning diaries for a period of six weeks. The results revealed that students with the self-regulated learning training maintained their level of self-reported self-regulated learning activities from pre- to posttest, whereas a significant decline was observed for the control students. Regarding students’ mathematical achievement, a slightly greater improvement was found for the students with self-regulated learning training.

The purpose of this study is to determine elementary school students’ level of self-regulation skills—goal setting and to develop strategies to achieve these goals. Survey method is used in the study with the participants of 368 students. The study was conducted at two elementary schools in Incesu and Kocasinan provinces of Kayseri and students filled a five-item Likert type scale. Data were analysed using statistical analysis program and 0.05 significance level was accepted. The result shows that the average grade of girls was higher than the boys, the average of 5th grades was higher than 6th grades and the average of the school in the city centre was higher than the school in the rural area. Also, there was a significant difference between the self-regulation scores of the grade levels in the favour of 5th grades. Lastly, the self-regulation score of the students living in city centre was higher than that of students living in village.   Keywords: Self-regulation, elementary education, survey research, elementary students

The purpose of this chapter is, as a self-regulated learning tool, to focus on digital storytelling by uncovering relationship between digital storytelling and self-regulated learning process/based on research findings made in the its field. Within this focus, firstly, concept of digital storytelling was theoretically addressed; researches made in learning-teaching for use have been presented; later, self-regulated learning processes and strategies have been defined and given examples. Finally, research findings on the use of digital stories as self-regulated learning tools have been shared.
