Saint-Evremond has earned a place in the history of seventeenth-century dramatic criticism as a fervent admirer of Corneille and a hostile critic of Racine. His strong affinity for Molière is less well-known, because he wrote very little about him. Not considering himself a professional author, he never felt the need to give full expression to his opinions on literature, or on any subject. In his youth he was primarily a railleur; as literary criticism, his first work, La Comédie des académistes, is a pungent satirical attack on pretension, triviality, and excessive concern with minutiae of vocabulary and technique. The satirical impulse remains present, in a more subdued form, in most of his later works. He probes into the weaknesses of ancient and modern literatures more frequently than he celebrates their merits. His discussions of authors he particularly admires, Montaigne, Voiture, Malherbe, Cervantes, are very brief. Most of his critical essays are directed against aberrations in judgment, insufficiencies, and misconceptions. Dissertation sur Alexandre, Sur les caractères des tragédies, A un auteur qui me demandait mon sentiment d'une pièce où l'héroïne ne faisait que se lamenter, Discours sur les historiens français, Sur nos comédies, De la comédie italienne, Sur les opéras, Observations sur le goüt et le discernement des français—all these are essays emphasizing various weaknesses in modern literature and taste. Réflexions sur nos traducteurs and Du merveilleux qui se trouve dans les poèmes des anciens are equally critical of certain aspects of ancient literature, while De la tragédie ancienne et moderne is an attack on both. It is true that a large part of his criticism of the drama deals with Corneille, whom he admired more than any other author, but his defense of Corneille often takes the form of an attack against the corrupt modern taste which has turned against him. His searching and critical mind preferred to contradict a generally accepted opinion, to reveal the hidden weaknesses of a universally admired work, rather than to define the qualities of the authors it enjoyed.

It is related to other branches of human sciences and this is why it has various other off shoots of which is the theory of intertextuality with the concepts that are close to classical Arabic literary criticism such as adaptation, plagiarism and modulation. Intertextuality is something which is paved for and deliberate, thus it does not come about by the spontaneity of the impluses. There are different types of intertextuality of which the Quranic intertextuality is among the most stand out among these types. It has been used by Najīb Mahfūẓ in his novels. We have managed to uncover this aspect in his Al-Liṣṣ and Al-Kilāb novel by pointing out the influence of Quranic intertextuality in this particular novel through the internal and external intertextuality including what comes to the mind of the writer. We would also try to uncover the implied meanings, signs and symbols until we are able to arrive at the metaphysical concepts of Quranic intertextuality in this novel. The study concluded that Najīb Mahfūẓ was a writer who is concerned with religion and the religious personality in addition to his concerned in using symbols, Sufism and the Quran itself in his novel. Keywords: Quranic Intertextuality– External/Internal Intertextuality– Al-Liṣṣ and Al-Kilāb– Najīb Mahfūẓ– Influence. Kata kunci: Intertekstualiti Al-Quran– Luaran/Dalaman– Al-Liṣṣ and Al-Kilāb– Pengaruh.

The article is focused mainly on aesthetic-philosophical constants of the work of art of Julius Zeyer. The author of the article tries to point out that Zeyer´s conception of art is tightly connected with artistic conceptions of the rising literary symbolistic generation: His aesthetic-philosophical system contains strong protest against rationalism, realism and naturalism in contemporary literature and underlines the way to subconscious roots of human existence; it turns away from rational understanding of the world and the mystical intuition of inner and organic life in modern literature. In the article the motifs of temple building and motifs of creating the organic picture of the world in Zeyer´s work of art are analysed. The article also contains main references to Zeyer´s work of art published by reputable names of the Czech and European literary criticism.

Deconstruction, a philosophical post-structural theory derived mainly from the work of the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, has evoked a great controversial debate over the past few decades. Promoting a sophisticated philosophical view of literary criticism, deconstruction has always been a complicated topic to comprehend especially for students and novice researchers in the field of literary criticism. This article review paper attempts to present an explanation of the main notions of the theory by reviewing one of Derrida’s most influencing articles on critical theory: “Structure, Sign, and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences”. The article which marked the birth of post-structuralism theory, was first delivered in 1966 at John Hopkins International Colloquium on “The Language of Criticism and the Sciences of Man”. This seminal work of Derrida criticizes structuralism for the great importance given to centralism and binary oppositions for the sake of accessing meaning. It can be claimed that the article sums up his ideas on deconstruction which in fact attacks all notions of center, totality and origin. Deconstruction is perceived as a method of breaking down and analyzing text in an attempt to approach some new interpretations which might be totally different from any other previous ones.

The research investigates the genre-forming function of the motive of retribution in the documentary and journalistic narrative of A.V. Ivanov “Pitchfork”. The relevance of the study is due to the attention of modern literary criticism to the historiosophical and social and political problems in Russian prose, the need to study the works of modern literature in its most striking manifestations. The purpose of this work is to try to determine the specificity of the main “bearing constructs” of the narrative of A. Ivanov “Pitchfork” in the aspect of the dominant motives of the work. The leading way to achieve this goal is the comparative and historical method, supplemented by comparative and typological, intertextual and mythopoetic approaches to the work of literature. As a result of the analysis, it was found that in the documentary and journalistic narrative of A. Ivanov “Pitchfork” the main genre-forming motive of the work, organizing its entire structure from the title to the “stories” of the main and secondary actors, is the retribution motive, derived from it and related motives, originally interpreted by the author. It is concluded that the motive of metaphysical, transcendental retribution “to all for everything” reproduced and transformed by Ivanov the artist, despite the extreme generality of this motive, helps the writer to comprehend and convey the contradictory complexity of historical events and historical characters involved in it. The field of application of the work results are researches on the latest literature, teaching literature in higher and secondary schools.

The article is devoted to modern reconfigurations of the literary process and literature (as a kind of art), experienced in literary criticism as the decline of literature (the thesis “we have no literature” as a statement of the degradation of an art form). The article provides an overview of reflection on this process on Russian “thick journals” (with the emphasis on the position of the well-known Russian critic Anna Kuznetsova), as well as the author’s view on the general transitional state of Russian modern literature.

The nineteenth century is the age of linguistics, which opened the horizons for human sciences in this age, especially the monetary field, which is considered the first beneficiary of the fruits of linguistics, where both work on one material: language. However, linguistics was interested in the ordinary language, while the criticism in the creative language took criticism from the impressionist stage to rely on technical mechanisms to prevent the critic from falling into the trap of self-impression. And with the scientific breakthrough of criticism resulting from the exchange of criticism and linguistics we found several approaches from structural to deconstruction, stylistic, which wanted to contain the page rhetoric, and other approaches that continue to breed with the development of linguistics, and do not forget the analysis of speech, and the mechanisms of the reader and his response. These scientific observations, which will be discussed in this study in the following lines.

The 16th century to the end of the 19th century, storytelling and praise of the sultan became the idea of authorship. This storytelling and praise are conveyed by making poetry his platform. The last poem to record the history of this Royal group was the Syair Riwayat Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Ampuan Besar Pahang (1953). However, such influence is less used when modern literature develops. Western powers bring a new diversity of forms and genres in creation. After 56 years, two works have emerged, Syair Sultan Azlan Shah Berjiwa Rakyat (2009), Mohd Ibrahim bin Said and Syair DYMM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar (2018) by Maskiah binti Masrom in this contemporary era. Kings and sultans became objects of storytelling in both works. The question is, what are the scopes or criteria that are the ideas of their authorship? The scope or criterion that became the idea of authorship used by both authors in presenting storytelling about their rulers. Both texts of the Royal poetry were sampled. Comparative methods are applied to examine their influence in presenting the idea of Royal history recordings in the contemporary era. Intrinsically research methods on study samples were also used. The findings found that the king's biography became the scope or criterion that became the idea of authorship for both authors in praise and upholding his king. Keywords: Literary criticism; Peering; Authorship; Royal syair; Contemporary syair

AbstractThe following article describes an alternative undergraduate introduction to the Bible course which uses six biblical selections in tandem with six readings from modern literature. Besides being an introduction to various forms of literary criticism, this format makes the biblical ideas more obviously relevant and invites students to theologize personally. Eventually the course becomes a biblical anthropology.
