Purpose Value stream mapping (VSM) is very common in the manufacturing industry to enhance transparency and support improvements within the production process. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the current status of the method from the user’s point of view and addresses its future sustainability in the context of the ongoing digitalization. Design/methodology/approach An empirical survey with 170 participants from different branches was conducted. The web-based questionnaire covers the topics Lean Management, respectively, VSM, Industry 4.0, the integration of both approaches as well as a possible need for action to modify the VSM. Results are analyzed in a quantitative way. Findings Benefits and shortcomings of VSM are already confirmed by previous publications. The serious challenge is the lack of flexibility of the method. In general users appreciate a combination of Lean methods and solutions of Industry 4.0. Moreover 92 percent of the participating experts request further development of the VSM using digitalization to compensate weaknesses. Research limitations/implications The findings are based only on Lean expert’s opinion. Over 95 percent of the participants are from Europe however most of them are from Germany. Although the results are adequate an international expansion of the survey would be advisable in order to distinguish local differences and similarities. In future work researchers need to further develop VSM to overcome the identified gaps. Practical implications Results of the study indicate the viewpoint of experts within different branches. This enables users to undertake a self-assessment regarding their own VSM-estimation. Originality/value This paper provides a current evaluation of the VSM from an exploratory perspective. The impact of global trends and new opportunities facilitated by digitalization are considered. Shortcomings and fields of actions become clear. Based on that necessity further research activities can be designed.

TCS (the Teaching Company Scheme) provides a mechanism whereby a programme of work can be undertaken jointly between industrial and academic partners by a TCS Associate. The main objective is that benefits will accrue to all three primary stakeholders; the company, the Associate and the higher education institution. The advantages to the company and the Associate from participating in such a collaborative venture are readily identifiable and this paper sets out to discuss what benefits can be obtained from the university's point of view, and how these may be maximized. The paper looks at the impact of TCS programmes on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, research activities and research assessment, staff development and new course generation and validation. In addition, grant budgets are discussed and financial benefits to the university identified. Finally, it is emphasized that a major outcome of a TCS programme is that it creates a communication path between industry, government agencies and academic institutions. Without such ongoing dialogue, collaboration cannot take place.

This essay discusses current research efforts in conversational systems from the philosophy of science point of view and evaluates some conversational systems research activities from the standpoint of naturalism philosophical theory. Conversational systems or chatbots have advanced over the decades and now have become mainstream applications. They are software that users can communicate with, using natural language. Particular attention is given to the Alime Chat conversational system, already in industrial use, and the related research. The competitive nature of systems in production is a result of different researchers and developers trying to produce new conversational systems that can outperform previous or state-of-the-art systems. Different factors affect the quality of the conversational systems produced, and how one system is assessed as being better than another is a function of objectivity and of the relevant experimental results. This essay examines the research practices from, among others, Longino’s view on objectivity and Popper’s stand on falsification. Furthermore, the need for qualitative and large datasets is emphasized. This is in addition to the importance of the peer-review process in scientific publishing, as a means of developing, validating, or rejecting theories, claims, or methodologies in the research community. In conclusion, open data and open scientific discussion fora should become more prominent over the mere publication-focused trend.

Low Carbon Buildings are regarded as structures with low carbon emission in the construction sector. They are environment-friendly in a sense that they contribute to the reduction in carbon emission through optimization of their energy consumption and passive cooling system. This study concentrated on green strategies that can reduce carbon emission of Putrajaya Campus buildings of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). Survey method in the form of questionnaire was applied to gather sufficient data for the research work. The survey work was performed on UNITEN building occupiers with diverse background inclusive of students, academic and non-academic staffs. The primary result implies that the methods of insulating the wall and utilization of energy saving air conditioners are most effective at reducing carbon emission of the buildings. It was also found that there is a low correlation with R-square value of 0.017 between the awareness on the impact of carbon emission from the air conditioning buildings and the awareness on climate change issue. This implies that there is a need for active measures to be taken to educate the respondents on the importance to reduce carbon emission of buildings in order to slow down climate change.

Introduction: Community pharmacy services are an integral part of the healthcare system directly involved in providing safe and effective patient care services. Despite the beneficial role of the community pharmacist, limited research focusing on their roles and responsibilities have been conducted. Thus, a bibliometric study was carried out to give a bibliometric overview of publications on community pharmacy in Nepal. Method: This is a bibliometric review of published literature of articles on community pharmacy in Nepal. The extensive literature search was carried out using PubMed, Google Scholar, NepJol as the sources of data. The community-based articles published from January 1, 1992, up to December 31, 2018, were retrieved. The keywords or medical subject headings (MeSH) terms, such as “Community Pharmacy”, “Community Pharmacist”, “Community Pharmacies”, “Community Pharmaceutical Services”, “Community Pharmaceutical Service”, "Private Pharmacy" and "Retail Pharmacy" were used.  Nepal was entered as a country affiliation. Result: A total of forty-seven articles were retrieved, of which 87.5% (N=47) were based on original research papers. The maximum number of an article published in a single year was 17.02% (The majority [8 (17.02%]) of articles were published in 2016. The average number of authors per article was 4.65 with a standard deviation of 2.33. These articles were published in 38 journals, of which 10 articles were published in the journal without the impact factor or Scimago Journal and Country Rank. Conclusion: Scientific publications from community pharmacy settings are scant in Nepal. Hence, more analytical research work should be carried out to enhance the community pharmacy services and to promote the quality use of medicines in Nepalese society.
