This study conducted an ergonomic evaluation of the working posture of workers engaged in various processes in the packaging section of a food manufacturing company. Workers in the packaging section of the food manufacturing company were divided into operating, folding, packing, carton wrapping and palletizing. Forty of the workers in the packaging section were placed under observation through video recording of their daily activities for a period of three months to obtain their working postures. Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) was used to analyze the working postures in order to obtain their ergonomic risk levels. Computer codes for RULA were written for quick and easy evaluation of upper arm, lower arm, wrist, wrist twist, neck, trunk and leg postures. The results from RULA indicated that 25% of the workers in the operating and folding units were exposed to medium ergonomic risk level; 30% of the workers in the packing unit and 10% of the workers in the carton wrapping unit were exposed to high ergonomic risk level while 10% of the workers in the palletizing unit were exposed to a very high ergonomic risk level. The study concluded that workers in the packaging section of the food manufacturing company were exposed to between medium and very high ergonomic risk levels of working posture necessitating the need to change the conditions of their workstations.

In automotive repair facilities worldwide, technicians are exposed to various ergonomic risk factors such as excessive exertions, awkward and static postures. The exposure of several ergonomic risk factors can lead to work related musculoskeletal complaints. This study was set out to examine working postures encountered by automotive service technicians in a small medium industry automotive workshop. A total of 240 observations (n=240) were made, and five types of working positions were identified, namely the “Underneath Vehicle” (vehicle on floor),“Side of Vehicle” (vehicle on floor), “Under the Hood”, “Side of Vehicle” (vehicle on lift), and “Underneath Vehicle” (vehicle on lift). Two positions, which were the “Underneath Vehicle” (vehicle on floor), and the “Side of Vehicle” (vehicle on floor) recorded 69 and 60 occurrences respectively. These two positions posed a significant ergonomic injury risk since the upper limbs, shoulders, spinal flexion combined with static holding were present in those two positions.

The aim of the article is to assess the present level of land development of flood risk areas in selected communes of the Łódź province in the context of potential negative consequences for people, the natural environment, cultural heritage and economic operations. The research includes urban as well as urban and rural communes (9 communes in total) of the Łódź province which display high and very high flood risk levels according to the methodology used in Flood protection operating plan for the Łódź province from 2013 ( Plan operacyjny… 2013). Uniejów and Warta have the highest synthetic flood risk levels due to the surface occupied by buildings and areas assigned to individual risk categories. In turn, Łowicz and Tomaszów Mazowiecki (town) display the highest general flood risk level due to diversification of buildings and areas of individual risk categories.

Company XXX is a factory that involving manufacturing of offshore containers in where the hot works are one of the crucial activities in fabrication and structuring the framework of the containers. This study had been conducted at hot work section to conduct initial and advanced ergonomic risk assessment to identify ergonomic risk factors involved among hot-work workers which cause the significant number of reports on ergonomic related health issues at hot works area from the year 2011 to year 2017. The initial and advanced ergonomic risk assessment had been conducted based on DOSH latest release of guideline on ergonomic risk assessment 2017 and all findings had been tabulated and analysed. Based on the intial ergonomic assessment, total score achived is 17.7 with main risk factors identified through the hot work acticties are including awkward postures, repetitive motions, static and sustained work postures, vibration, insufficient ventilation, exposure of noise and working in extreme temperature. Based on Advanced ERA conducted on selected 3 workers, the study shows Muscle Fatigue Assessment (MFA) with average score for risk level shown ‘High’ and ‘Very High’ categories, Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) with average total score more than 10 which categorized as ‘High Risk’ and Quick Exposure Check (QEC) which shown the workers have very high risk for back and shoulder or arm parts with score level are between 29 to 40 for back static and  41 to 56 for shoulder and arm parts. Based on results of the assessment, company XXX recommended had been to conduct further investigation for improvements to determine effective control measure for the work process in order to reduce that risk level towards the hot work workers.

Metro systems have become high-risk entities due to the increased frequency and severity of urban flooding. Therefore, understanding the flood risk of metro systems is a prerequisite for mega-cities’ flood protection and risk management. This study proposes a method for accurately assessing the flood risk of metro systems based on an improved trapezoidal fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP). We applied this method to assess the flood risk of 14 lines and 268 stations of the Guangzhou Metro. The risk results validation showed that the accuracy of the improved trapezoidal fuzzy AHP (90% match) outperformed the traditional trapezoidal AHP (70% match). The distribution of different flood risk levels in Guangzhou metro lines exhibited a polarization signature. About 69% (155 km2) of very high and high risk zones were concentrated in central urban areas (Yuexiu, Liwan, Tianhe, and Haizhu); the three metro lines with the highest overall risk level were lines 3, 6, and 5; and the metro stations at very high risk were mainly located on metro lines 6, 3, 5, 1, and 2. Based on fieldwork, we suggest raising exits, installing watertight doors, and using early warning strategies to resist metro floods. This study can provide scientific data for decision-makers to reasonably allocate flood prevention resources, which is significant in reducing flood losses and promoting Guangzhou’s sustainable development.

Limestone sorting work at PT. Embossed Persada is a repetitive work attitude and a long period of time, so that it can be at risk of causing Musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort at work. The purpose of this study is to analyze the working posture of limestone sorting operators. There are 3 work postures: limestone sorting work posture has a value of 4141, work posture for limestone removal 2173, and work posture for limestone 3333. Other objectives of this study are to identify work postures that have a risk of Musculoskeletal injury. Based on the results of the categorization of OWAS values, an assessment was obtained: limestone 4141-4 work posture, sludge removal posture 2173-3, work posture inserting limestone 3333-3. The work posture has a very high value where it is necessary to make immediate improvements to the work posture by redesigning the work facilities in the sorting section. Redesign of work facilities carried out to avoid Musculoskeletal interference that is using conveyor aids with a capacity of 9 Tons / Hour. Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mempelajari rangkaian kerja dan aspek Ergonomi yang mempengaruhi postur kerja pada divisi penyortiran tersebut dengan menggunakan metode OWAS (Ovako Work Analysis System), metode ini  digunakan untuk mengevaluasi sikap kerja yang berpotensi mengalami gangguan pada Musculoskeletal dimana postur kerja yang diamati meliputi pergerakan tubuh bagian punggung, bahu, tangan, dan kaki termasuk paha, lutut dan pergelangan kaki. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah melakukan analisa postur kerja operator penyortiran batu gamping. Diketahui ada 3 postur kerja : postur kerja pemilahan batu gamping memiliki nilai 4141, postur kerja pengangkatan batu gamping 2173, dan postur kerja memasukan batu gamping 3333. Tujuan lain dari penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi postur kerja yang memiliki resiko cedera Musculoskeletal. Berdasarkan hasil pengkategorian nilai OWAS maka, diperoleh penilaian : Postur kerja pemilahan batu gamping 4141-4, postur kerja pengangkatan batu gampng 2173-3, postur kerja memasukkan batu gamping 3333-3. Postur kerja tersebut memiliki nilai yang sangat tinggi dimana perlu dilakukan perbaikan segera terhadap postur kerja dengan perancangan ulang fasilitas kerja pada bagian penyortiran. Perancangan ulang fasilitas kerja yang dilakukan untuk menghindari gangguan Musculoskeletal yaitu menggunakan alat bantu conveyor dengan kapasitas 9 Ton/Jam. Perancangan fasilitas ini dirancang dengan pengukuran menurut nilai rata-rata data Anthropometri Ergonomi Indonesia. Dengan mengevaluasi postur kerja sebelum adanya perbaikan, sehingga hasil dari penelitian ini dapat digunakan sebagai bahan pertimbangan dalam perancangan stasiun kerja yang sesuai dengan aspek-aspek Ergonomi.Kata Kunci : Ergonomi, Postur Kerja, Musculoskeletal, Perancangan Fasilitas, OWAS.

Eliminating awkward and stressful working postures through the ergonomics workplace design is important in preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders. However, effective design tools are currently lacking. Different postural analysis tools have been proposed to help evaluate workplaces in the level of postural stresses experienced by the workers, but they are not capable of supporting the proactive ergonomics in design. In an effort to address the problem, this study presents a novel memory-based workplace evaluation (MBWE) model. When given an input scenario expressed in terms of the worker anthropometric characteristics, the task requirement, and the geometric descriptions of the to-be-evaluated workplace design, the model computes the range of feasible working postures for the scenario, determines their postural stress levels, and presents a report on the overall postural risk level of the input scenario. The MBWE model combines the memory-based posture planning (MBPP) model and the Ovako working posture analysis (OWAS) method.

BACKGROUND: The number of studies investigating the relationship between office employees and the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is limited. Only a few focused on assessing workplace ergonomics of office employees. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the risk of MSDs and associated factors in the office workplaces of a large-size manufacturing company. METHODS: Data were gathered from 208 office employees from a manufacturing company via Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) and Cornell questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed to examine the relationship between ergonomic risk levels and MSDs reported by the office staff. RESULTS: The mean ROSA final score is 3.52 (std. dev. = 0.71), chair section is 3.30, monitor and telephone section is 2.18, and mouse and keyboard section is 2.69. Thirty-nine of 208 (18.8%) office workplaces are at risk. The most important factor to raise the risk level is found to be the height and depth of the chair. The Cornell questionnaire results highlight that the highest discomfort severity is related to the neck (32.26%), lower back (23.23%) and upper back (22.26%). The discomforts in the neck (r = 0.362), upper back (r = 0.404) and lower back (r = 0.368) are moderately and positively correlated according to the final ROSA score. The results indicate that the highest risked departments are Accounting, Sub Industry, Production Planning, and Manufacturing Management. CONCLUSION: The parameters associated with the chair section should be considered a priority for reducing and eliminating MSDs among office employees.

This research intends to analyze the factors related to the complaints of MSDs suffered by the shelving staff in the library and reading room in Universitas Airlangga Surabaya. Methods: This research is observational research that applies a cross-sectional design. The sample of this research consists of 27 people chosen by the total population method. The data regarding the individual characteristics and the complaints of MSDs are obtained through interview and filling out a questionnaire that has been standardized. The data on working postures are analyzed by referring to the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, while the data on the complaints of MSDs are scrutinized by implementing the Nordic Body Map (NBM) method. Results: Reveal that most of the shelving staff experience very high-risk level of MSDs (40.7%). Other than that, it is noticed that the working postures consist of squatting (high-risk level), bowing (high-risk level), standing (moderate-risk level), standing with arms stretching (very high-risk level), and standing with arms stretching while tiptoeing (very high-risk level). The collected data is analyzed by using the Spearman correlation test. Conclusion: It can be stated that the strongest factor causing the occurrence of MSDs is the years of service (r=0.803) with a positive relationship, which means that the longer the years of service is, the higher the risk to experience MSDs is. Keywords: complaints of musculoskeletal disorders, individual factors, shelving staff
