The relationships between serum levels of trace elements and breast cancer remain relatively unknown. In this study, we investigate serum levels of seven trace elements in Korean breast cancer patients compared to controls without breast cancer. Serum trace element levels were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in Korean breast cancer patients before initiation of breast cancer treatment. Korean females without breast cancer served as a control group. Trace element levels were measured in the discovery cohort (n = 287) and were validated in an independent cohort (n = 142). We further investigated possible associations between trace element levels and the presence of lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, or triple-negative breast cancer among breast cancer patients in subgroup analyses. Serum manganese and molybdenum levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in breast cancer patients than in controls. Serum copper levels were significantly higher in breast cancer patients with distant metastasis, while selenium levels were significantly lower. Other trace elements were neither significantly different between breast cancer patients and controls nor between subgroups of breast cancer patients. Our study provides insights about the potential roles and impacts of trace elements through an assessment of the associations between trace elements and breast cancer.

In the breast cancer significant differences occurs in the normal distribution of the trace elements, playing an important role in carcinogenic process. The aim of this study was to investigate the serum levels of some trace elements (Chromium, Cadmium, Manganese, Cobalt, Nickel, Selenium, Zinc, Iron, Copper and Magnesium) by using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). The present study included 150 females, the participates were divided into two main groups, control group which consisted of 75 apparently healthy females, 75patients with breast cancer group .The serum levels of Chromium (tcal2.9631 ,ttab1.960), Cadmium (tcal2.0798 ,ttab1.960), Manganese (tcal18.5676, ttab1.960), Selenium (tcal2.2759,ttab1.960), Iron (tcal2.9296,ttab1.960), Copper (tcal4.0869, ttab1.960),Magnesium (tcal2.6648, ttab1.960), Cobalt (tcal3.8615 , ttab1.960) and Zinc (tcal7.0160, ttab1.960) were statistically significant higher in the breast cancer patients group than the control group. Similarly, Nickel (tcal1.5988,ttab1.960) levels showed significant lower level in breast cancer patients group. On the other hand, the higher levels of trace elements could lead to formation of free radicals or other reactive oxygen species. The evaluation of these trace elements in serum maybe used as helpful tool in diagnosis of the breast cancer.

Disorders of trace elements in diabetic patients with type 1 are possibly led to glucose metabolism disturbance and increased oxidation, which may promote the development of diabetes and insulin resisting. We aim to clarify the role of the serum level of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), iron  (Fe), Zn/Cu ratio and their relations with the degree of oxidative stress in females   T1D. The study included 30 healthy women and 54 women   with insulin-dependent diabetes. Serum levels of trace element have determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.  Results showed a decrease levels of Cu, Fe,  Zn and MDA in diabetes patients compared to controls (p <0.000), (p < 0.000)  (p< 0.001) (p <0.001) correspondingly. Significance in correlations amid Zn and age (r= -0.449, p <0.032), significance in correlations among Co in addition to age (r= -0.434, p <0.038) with significances in correlation amid Fe and MDA (r= 0.024, p <0.366).

Abstract Introduction: The relationship between trace elements and OS in CKD patients is still not completely elucidated. The aim of this work is to determine the serum levels of OS and the trace elements in CKD patients. Methods: A total of 91 patients were enrolled and then divided into 3 groups at the basis of CKD stages. Healthy volunteers were included as a control group. Serum levels of SOD, MDA, Zn, Cu, Ca, Fe, and Mg were determined , and the correlation among these datas were analyzed. Results: The MDA level in the patients’ sera was significantly higher than the controls’ (P<0.05); however, their sera level of SOD was obviously lower (P<0.05). Meanwhile, the creatinine level in CKD patients’ sera was positively correlated with the MDA level (r = 0.534, P<0.01), while negatively with the expression of SOD (r = -0.427, P < 0.01). A lower expression of Zn and Ca values could be seen in the cases’ sera (P<0.05). Besides that, it showed a significant negative correlation between serum levels of MDA and Ca (r=-0.282, P<0.01), MDA and Zn (r=-0.358, P<0.01), while a positive correlation between MDA and Cu (r = 0.236, P=0.022). Adversely, the expression of SOD in the sera of cases was positively related to the levels of Ca (r=0.273, P<0.01) and Zn (r=0.277, P<0.01).Conclusion: Abnormalities of OS and Zn、Ca existed in CKD patients; and elevated OS may play a role in the trace elements imbalance. Dialysis seems to have no obvious effect on plasma trace elements.

Abstract Background and aims: Insulin-like Growth Factors (IGF-1) plays as mediator between metabolic syndrome (MetS), oxidative stress and breast cancer (BrCa) progression. The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between IGF-1 serum levels and metabolic profile biomarkers in a population group of BrCa patients. Material and methods: 126 Syrian women with breast lesions were assigned in 3 study groups: I. Malignant breast tumor group, II. Benign breast tumor group and a Normal (control) group. The following biochemical parameters were measured: IGF-1, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides (TG) and glucose. Results: The mean levels of serum IGF- 1 in patients with breast cancer was significantly higher than those with benign tumors but we did not find any correlation between IGF-1 serum levels and tumor stage or lymph nodes metastases. Total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels, along with TG were significantly higher in patients with BrCa versus benign and normal subjects. Conclusion: Results support the link of metabolic dysregulation and oxidative stress in BrCa progression as elevation of serum IGF-1 levels in BrCa patients are associated with metabolic syndrome markers which eventually adds more risk in cancer progression.

Purpose: Breast cancer (BC) is globally the main reason of cancer-related deaths in women. Omentin-1, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant adipokine, plays different roles in tumorigenesis and anti-oncogenic pathways. In present study, we investigated the association of omentin-1 with oxidative stress and clinical significances in healthy controls and BC patients to assess the prognostic and diagnostic value of omentin-1 in this cancer. Methods: This case-control study included 88 BC patients and 86 healthy controls. The serum levels of omentin-1 were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays methods. Also, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) serum levels were measured by spectrophotometer. quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to the measurement of gene expression of omentin-1. Results: the serum levels of omentin-1 were significantly lower in the BC patients compared to the healthy controls (P<0.001). Moreover, gene expression of omentin-1was significantly downregulated in the BC tissues compared to the adjacent normal tissues (P<0.001). Gene expression of omentin-1and its serum levels were significantly higher in grade I compared with grade II and III (P=0.001, P<0.001, respectively). Additionally, the serum levels of omentin-1 in the p53-positive BC patients were significantly higher than the p53-negative BC patients (P=0.001). There was an inverse correlation between the serum levels of MDA and TOS with the serum levels of omentin-1 (r=-0.436, r=-461, respectively). Conclusion: We conclude that omentin-1 may have a good prognostic and diagnostic roles in the BC patients and decreases oxidative stress in these patients.
