This paper aims at examining the effect of the Value Added by Intellectual Capital (VAIC) in terms of its three components: capital employed efficiency, human capital efficiency, and structure capital efficiency on the financial performance of commercial banks listed on the Amman Stock Exchange for the period 2010–2018.Value Added of Intellectual Capital (VAIC) model was used to measure the intellectual capital while Tobin’s Q ratio was used as an indicator of bank financial performance. The study has used parametric techniques like multiple linear regression and correlation coefficient, and other statistical methods to investigate its hypothesis. It was found that only human capital efficiency and capital employed efficiency had impacts on the banks’ financial performance. These results emphasize the importance of using the VAIC model to evaluate the financial performance of these banks, as well as encourage banks to make further investments in intellectual capital’s components, and concentrate on human resources to build up their knowledge, skills and capabilities, because of their greatest role in value creation.

Kinerja keuangan diukur oleh empat indikator yaitu Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Debt to Assets (DAR) dan Debt to Equity (DER).

Research background: Profitability and the factors that determine it have always intrigued the scholars. Despite the large number of studies dealing with this topic at the international level, this paper sheds a new light on the issue since it deals with the listed companies in an emerging economy confronting two performance measures. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to provide evidence on the performance of Croatian non-financial firms listed on the Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE). Methods: The analysis encompassed firms that operated in the 2015 – 2019 period. For this purpose, the authors confronted two performance measures, i.e. accounting-based performance measure represented with return on assets (ROA) whereas Tobin’s Q stands for the market-based measure of performance or firm value. Independent variables that served as potential determinants of listed companies’ performance include inventories management, productivity, liquidity measured with both current and quick ratio, and size calculated on the basis of total assets, and sales. Findings & Value added: After employing static panel analysis, the results reveal statistically significant influence of size variable based on assets in both models though it takes negative sign in the model where performance is measured with Tobin’s Q, whereas its positive impact on performance is recorded in ROA model. Furthermore, size based on total sales also positively affects performance when measured with ROA.

The study objects for investigating the ability of traditional and modern performance indicators in interpreting earnings management phenomena of listed manufacturing firms in the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE), using adjusted Jones method for measuring earnings management. The study takes into considerations three traditional indicators, including; Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Sales (ROS), and Operating Cash Flow, while the Market Value Added (MVA), Tobin's-Q, and Economic Value Added (EVA) are used as modern indicators for financial performance. A sample consisted of 29 firms had been selected, and data covering the period 2006-2013 had been collected from these firms, where 232 observations were used in the analysis. The study found that the earnings management of listed manufacturing firms at (ASE) still practice the phenomenon of earnings management, at low level based on the measures followed by the study, and that there is a significant linear relationship between performance indicators (traditional and modern) and earnings management. The results indicate that there is a significant as well inverse relationship between (ROA) and earnings management. Also, the study found that modern performance indicators are able to interpret earnings management, where the results indicate that there is a significant as well as inverse relationship between (EVA), and (Tobin's-q) and earnings management. One important finding showed that (EVE) is effective and followed by (Tobin's-q) indicator in interpreting the earnings management phenomena. However, the study did not show a significant relationship between CFO, LEV Ratio, ROS, and MVA with earnings management. Based on these results, the study made many recommendations to the interested parties and the most important one is that companies must disclose the economic value added in the financial statements to enable investors and related parties to be aware of the amount of value-added that lead to increase the wealth of shareholders, and to help managers to consider all costs of capital. In addition, these indicators can be used with other indicators such as (ROA, ROE) to evaluate firm’s performance.
