One of the criteria for admission in Annual Professional Exam for medical studentsin Pakistan is to have 75% attendance during the session and the other is to pass Send upexam with 50% marks. Objectives: To assess the usefulness of send-up exams in predictingthe annual marks by comparing their results with annual University examination results forpreclinical medical students. Study Design: A cross sectional analytical study. Methodology: Atotal of 173 preclinical students of 1st and 2nd year MBBS passing the First Professional Examin first attempt were included in the study. Send up result of each student during the year wasentered as percentage and compared with percentage total marks of same students in their 1stprofessional exam conducted by the University. Data maintained by Physiology Departmentwas entered and analysed by SPSS 21. Descriptive statistics in the form of numbers andpercentages were used and further analyzed using Pearson Correlation and Paired T Test ofSignificance. The p value of < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: A total of 173 students(81 from 1st Year and 92 from 2nd Year) who had passed the annual exam in first attempt wereincluded in the study. Out of these, 132(76.3%) were females and 41(23.7%) males. All studentswere within the age group of 18-24 years, mean age being 21.06 years. Mean send-up scorein the subject of Physiology was 57.37 (Range=33-78). Percentage total marks in all subjects(Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry) in annual exam had a mean of 69.46 (Range=55-84).Send-up result in percentage was directly assessed against the percentage marks obtainedin annual exam for each student. The send-up marks were significantly related to the marks inthe final exam (p=0.01). The strength of association was same as that for average test markswith annual marks. Girls performed better than boys during the send up (Mean 58.35 Vs 54.21)as well as in the annual exam (Mean 70.12 Vs 67.33). There was also a difference amongstdifferent classes with 2nd year performing better than first year in both send-up (Mean 58.60vs 55.98) and annual exams (Median 70.83 vs 67.91). Conclusions: Send-up results may begood predictors of the academic performance in professional examination in preclinical years ina medical college. Female students perform better than their counterparts during both send-upand annual exams.

Objective: to determine the association of test anxiety on OSCE performance of medical students in Taif Medical College. Study Design: The survey research design was used to conduct the research. Place and Duration of study: This was a comparative cross sectional study conducted on the 3rd, 4thand 5th year medical students in Taif Medical College of Taif University KSA. Materials & Methods: A ten item questionnaire developed by Nist and Diehl (1990) for determining mild or severe levels of TA experienced by students was used in the study. Results: A total of 518 students participated in the survey. The majority of the sample population was male 319 (61%) and 199 (39%) were females. Our results showed that a greater proportion (21%) of the male students, as compared to their counterparts, were in the group having high level of anxiety during test. It was observed that the 3rd year students performed poorly on TA and scored high on the scale. The difference observed in proportions was also statistically significant (Chi square 65.97, p value 0.000001). There was a significant negative correlation between the test anxiety and students performance in oral structured examination (OSCE). Pearson correlation coefficient of -0.45 and a p value < 0.0001 was observed. Conclusion: We conclude that test anxiety is experienced by a large number of undergraduate medical students of Taif Medical University. Anxiety has a negative effect on overall academic performance; female students were also more affected compared to their male counterparts. Background: Evidence based scientific knowledge and research is an integralpart of medicine. This led us to this study to find out the knowledge, attitude and practiceregarding research in medical students of final year and first year at Army Medical College-NUST, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to compare thelevel of knowledge, attitude and practice regarding research amongst medical students of finalyear MBBS and 1st year MBBS. Study Design: Cross sectional descriptive study. Place ofStudy: Army Medical College-NUST Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Duration of Study: Three months(October 2013 to December 2013). Materials and Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 23closed questions, was filled by students of first and final year MBBS, through non-probabilityconvenience sampling. The data was analyzed by SPSS 21. p value of < 0.05 was consideredto be significant. Results: Over 50% of first year students and 21.53% of the final year studentshad poor knowledge of research methodology. 89.30% students from final year along with51.30% students from first year were motivated and had interest in research activities. Not asingle student from first year and only 12.37% of students from final year were actively involvedin research process at the time of undertaking the research. 50.40% first year students and58.46% from final year strongly disagreed that there are ample opportunities for research inthe college. Conclusions: A working scientific forum should be established in the collegewith introduction of student mentor link. Students should be guided on how to carry out aresearch and how to make a good research question, how to develop skills for paper writingand evaluating the data collected.


Background: Information technology (IT) is a new way of teaching and learning. One of the promising media of information technology is e-Learning, which is used to enhance knowledge and skills among users. A student gains better and deep knowledge through a useful tool. This survey aimed to determine practices among medical students for e-Learning. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 184 students amongst the 500 students currently enrolled in medical college. Data was collected using questionnaires and were analyzed through SPSS version 22. Chi-square was used for qualitative values. Results: Majority 90.80% (n=167) students were aware of e-Learning and were statistically high in first year students (p-value: 0.018). The student did not show statistically significant results for content learned through e-Learning with a p-value of 0.063. Different resources were used for e-Learning in which videos had the highest percentage (87.60%) and audios were used as the least resource for e-Learning (29.20%). Daily, 56% of the students use e-Learning for 1 hour or less and only 3% of the students used it for more than 4 hours. Conclusion: Majority of undergraduate medical students were aware of the use of e-Learning and most of them preferred e-Learning for their course work and studies showing a significant increase in understanding and use, compared to studies conducted earlier. Participants found e-Learning useful and effective tool in increasing knowledge and understanding of their subject. Keywords: e-Learning; Practices; Students.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is one of the most important factors that affect human health; it reduces the chances of hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast and colon cancer, and depression.OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to measure prevalence of physical activity and to determine the factors affecting the level of physical activity among medical student in Jazan University.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the students of medical colleges of Jazan University. A random sample of 419 was determined using most recent physical activity prevalence. A validated self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection.RESULTS: There is a high prevalence of inactivity among study participants (88.1%). Females (91.7%) were more significantly (p value=0.013) inactive than males (83.8%). The most influential barrier perceived by participants is (heavy) academic work as well as lack of places for physical activity; the latter factor being more effective in hindering female students' physical activity.CONCLUSION: Results revealed that the inactivity rate was very high among medical students. The results of this study call for a well-planned intervention at the university level for improving the level of physical activity among university students.

Objectives: To know the perception of peer-learning among first batch of 1st year medical students in CMH Kharian Medical College. Study Design: Cross-Sectional study. Setting: CMH Kharian Medical College. Period: June 2018 and September 2018. Material & Methods: Questionnaire was distributed among hundred first year medical students on self-reflection and feedback after 15 min power point presentation given by their fellow students based on different pathophysiological scenarios. Results: Out of 100 students, 85 filled out questionnaire form completely. 60% of students were of the opinion that peer-learning facilitated them to perform better in the exam, and can be continued for future batches. 50% of students agreed that this innovative learning modality was conducted in a systematic manner, helped them to improve their understanding of the subject and learning was fostered based on the principles of self-reflection and feedback. Problem solving ability was improved by peer learning format according to 49% of students, while 47% of students reported that this innovative learning strategy provided them with a tool to improve their learning through interaction, while research capabilities of 37% students were improved. Conclusion: Majority of first year medical students lacking senior guidance learned better in a comfortable environment from their peers, and improved understanding of the core subject by realizing the implication of the concept of self-reflection and feedback.

Background: The development of an ideal doctor-patient relationship requires empathy. Empathetic conversation aids in the formation of an open and trusting equation between doctor and patient. Furthermore, this leads to accurate diagnoses and more compliance to the advised treatment. In this manner, empathy helps in overall recovery of the patient and improves global functioning and generalised well-being. This study aims to make note of the fluctuation in empathy levels during medical education. Studies done in various countries have found factors such as curriculum, clinical rotations timing and gender to progressively influences empathy levels in students throughout their medical training. The recent trend of violence against healthcare professionals in India calls for an urgent action into the gap between doctors and patients communication. Empathy towards patients and attendants will reduce such untoward events. In this current context, we should improve empathy levels among the training doctors. As a first step, we should assess various factors affecting empathy among health care professionals. Method: This cross sectional study was done among undergraduates of a rural medical college in Northern Telangana during the time period of October to December 2019. Their empathy levels were assessed using Jefferson’s Scale for Empathy- Student version (JSE-S). Result: Of the 470 students surveyed, 227 were males and 243 females. Female students were having higher empathy among first year and second years (p<0.001). Empathy levels seem to decline from first year to second year following which the mean empathy remains similar throughout the remaining years in students of both sexes. There is no significant relation between mean empathy scores and choice of future speciality (p>0.05). Conclusion: Female undergraduate students are found to be more empathetic than their male counterparts. A fall in empathy scores from the first to second year of MBBS is seen, which is when students enter their clinical rotations. Targeted intervention at this time may go a long way in the creation of a new generation of more empathetic physicians. Hence, there is a need for evaluation of teaching and learning techniques in medical education. Further, there is a call for more research into the determinants of decline in empathy amongst medical professionals.

Abstract: Domain knowledge is very important for the formation of one's actions. Knowledge of parents is very important in the formation of the underlying behaviors that support or do not support the oral hygiene of children. Good oral hygiene will make healthy teeth and surrounding tissues. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge of parent swith achild's dental and oral hygiene in kinder garten Tunas Bhakti Manado. The research used the descriptive analytical study with cross sectional approach. The experiment was conducted in a kinder garten classroom Shoots Bhakti Manado. The sample in this study all children in kinder garten preschool Tunas Bhakti Manado as many as 70 children examined OHI-S and as many as 12 questions questionnaire for the elderly. Sampling technique with a total sampling method.The results of this study indicate that parental knowledge about dental and oral hygiene in either category by 45.7% with oral hygiene status of children included in the medium category at 65.7%. Based on the results obtained Pearson correlation test p value of 0.020 (p <0.05). It can be concluded that there is a relationship between the level of knowledge of parents with children's dental and oral hygiene in kindergarten Tunas Bhakti Manado. Kebersihan mulut yang baik akan membuat gigi dan jaringan sekitarnya sehat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara tingkat pengetahuan orang tua dengan kebersihan gigi dan mulut anak di TK Tunas Bhakti Manado.Jenis penelitian yang digunakan yaitu penelitian deskriptif analitik dengan pendekatan cross sectional study.Penelitian dilaksanakan di ruangan kelas TK Tunas Bhakti Manado. Sampel dalam penelitian ini seluruh anak prasekolah di TK Tunas Bhakti Manado sebanyak 70 anak diperiksa OHI-S dan kuesioner sebanyak 12 pertanyaan untuk orang tua. Teknik pengambilan sampel dengan metode total sampling. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan orang tua mengenai kebersihan gigi dan mulut dalam kategori baik sebesar 45,7% dengan status kebersihan gigi dan mulut anak termasuk dalam kategori sedang sebesar 65,7%. Berdasarkan hasil uji korelasi pearson didapatkan p value 0,020 (p<0,05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara tingkat pengetahuan orang tua dengan kebersihan gigi dan mulut anak di TK Tunas Bhakti Manado. Kata kunci: pengetahuan, OHI-S, anak prasekolah.

Aim: To assess the metabolic abnormalities in children younger than 10 years of age with vesical calculus. Study design: Retrospective cross-sectional study Place and duration of study: Department of Urology, Khairpur Medical College Hospital, Khairpur from 1st October 2014 to 30th September 2016. Methodology: Two hundred and six children age <10 years of age and either gender presented with vesical calculus were enrolled. Demographic information like age, gender, residence, serum electrolytes, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, uric acid, blood, and urine pH were recorded for the purpose of metabolic workup. Results: The mean age was 4.76±1.22 years and 157 (76.2%) were males and 49 (23.8%) were females. The frequency of metabolic abnormalities was observed in 153 (74.3%) of the patients. A significantly higher prevalence of metabolic abnormalities was observed with male gender (p-value 0.006), dark colored urine as presenting symptoms (p-value 0.022), frequent urination (p-value 0.045), and hematuria (p-value 0.016). Of 153 patients with metabolic abnormalities, hypercalciuria was observed in 45 (29.4%), hypocitraturia in 73 (47.7%), hyperoxaluria in 21 (13.7%), and hyperuricosuria in 14 (9.2%) patients. Conclusion: The frequency of metabolic abnormalities was high among children with vesical calculus. Moreover, hypocitraturia in these children was observed in majority followed by hypercalciuria, hyperoxaluria, and hyperuricosuria. Keywords: Metabolic abnormalities, Children, Vesical calculus

Introduction: Eosinophilia is a well-known host immune response in helminthic infestation. This study was carried out to investigate whether a correlation exists between absolute eosinophil count in children with stool specimen positive for helminthic infestation. Aim And Objective: To determine average raised absolute eosinophil count in children who were having various helminthic infestation with stool specimen positive. Materials And Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study done at Navodaya medical college hospital and research centre during 2019 October to 2020 September for a period of 12 months. Both blood and stool samples were obtained from a total of 69 suspected children after examined, categorised into 2 groups. Among them 24 cases were positive of helminthic infestation and 45 cases were negative. T-test and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Results: The study revealed that children infested with helminths found to have higher absolute eosinophil count (mean 4644/µl (95%CI; 3474-4212) than not infested (mean 801/µl (95%CI; 616-945) with p value <0.001. In this helminth's family; nematodes, trematodes, cestodes showed mean values of absolute eosinophil count were 5206/µl (4806-7151/µl), 4930/µl (4500-5382/µl) and 2179/µl (2500-1669/µl) respectively. Conclusions: Raised absolute eosinophil count has been observed in stool specimen positive cases of helminths, especially more in nematodes. Therefore, should be considered for a single dose of albendazole.

Abstract Introduction Compared to other deadly communicable diseases, Psychoactive Substance use is among the leading cause of death. Repeated use linked to addiction, dependence and predisposition for criminal and antisocial behaviors. Even though drug use in Africa relatively is short; however the abuse of drug in Africa is escalating rapidly. Substances use is also one of the most burning and growing public health problems in Ethiopia, as in many developing countries; alcohol is the most frequently used substance. Objective To Assess the Prevalence of alcohol Use and Associated factors among Dilla University undergraduate students in Southern Ethiopia. 2018. Methods An Institution based cross -sectional study was conducted at Dilla University among undergraduate regular students from January-February. Systematic random sampling technique was used to get a total of 803 samples of students from each year and department of the university. The collected data was coded, entered in to EPI-INFO version7.1 and analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Crude and adjusted OR were analyzed using logistic regression and the level of significance of association was determined at P- value <0.05. Result A total of 803 participants were interviewed with a response rate of 91.7%. Among the Participants, alcohol use was found to be 67.6%. (41.8%; n=336). Being 4 th year students (AOR =2.66, 95% CI: 1.64, 4.31), having friends who use substance (AOR=1.53, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.1), being Khat user (AOR= 1.48, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.09) and being Cigarette smoker (AOR=1.76, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.84) were found to be significantly associated with alcohol use. Conclusion Half of the participants found to have alcohol use. Therefore, early prevention, detection and alleviating of alcohol use should be implemented among students in the university.
