Introduction: Clinical skills refer to the skills required for a clinician to manage a complete patient encounter. Clinical skill laboratories provide the facility to medical students and medical staff to learn the clinical skills before applying them on patients. Objectives: To evaluate perception of medical students regarding skill lab training. Study Design: Cross -sectional study. Study Setting: Wah Medical College. Period: January 2017 to June 2017. Study Subject: Students of Final Year M.B.B.S. Sample Size: 114 students. Sampling Technique: Convenient sampling. Data Collection Procedure: With informed consent of participants, questionnaires were filled by students themselves. Questionnaire was comprised of two parts; first part comprised of demographic data, second part comprised of 18 questions to determine perception of medical students about skill lab training. The responses of 18 questions were measured on four-point Likert scale from strongly disagree to agree. Data Analysis: Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 19, frequencies and percentages were calculated. The Chi square- goodness of fit test for one sample was applied on various levels of agreement. The p value of less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The mean age of 114 students was 23.4 years with minimum age of 21 years and maximum of 26 years. Male students were 45(39%) and 69(61%) were female students. Out of 114 medical students108 (94.8%) students preferred to practice in skill lab before performing it on patient and they also had an opinion that the mentor must be friendly and helpful during teaching. Among them 107 (93.9%) students desired that procedures in the skill lab should be performed by the mentors first in front of students and 103 (90.4%) students thought that training of practical skills improve their learning. Out of them 94(82.5%) students believed that skill lab training increased their motivation to become a doctor, 102 (89.5%) students thought that skill lab practice provides a feeling of security for learning process and 100 (87.7%) students had an opinion that it should be a compulsory part of medical curriculum and even it should be started from the first year of the medical education. P value of level of agreement of all the variables regarding perception about skill lab training was found to be < 0.001 which was statistically significant. Conclusion: The students believed that skill lab training is very useful for them and they preferred to practice on manikin before dealing with the patients.

Abstract Objective: To determine perception of medical students about learning from integrated simulated clinical skills sessions in Respiration and Circulation module of Year 1 undergraduate medical curriculum at Aga Khan University. Subjects & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education, Aga Khan University (AKU) from July 2018 to February 2019. Integrated clinical skills session involves use of a combination of live simulated patient and mechanical simulator to teach clinical skills.  These sessions were conducted in Respiration and Circulation Module of MBBS Year I curriculum after which quantitative data was collected by a questionnaire that assessed usefulness of integrated clinical skills teaching method and confidence gained by students. The responses acquired were assessed on a Likert scale ranging from 1-5, (strongly agree -strongly disagree).  Descriptive analysis was performed. A focused group discussion (FGD) with students and an in-depth interview with a facilitator conducting the clinical skills sessions was arranged. Simple verbatim transcription of FGD recordings and thematic analyses was executed. Results: Quantitative analysis showed that more than 90% of the students believed integrated sessions were effective in acquiring the learning objectives and found them enjoyable and motivating. 80% expressed confidence that they had accomplished learning objectives and felt they have learned practical clinical skills. Qualitative analysis revealed that these sessions enhanced understanding of subject matter and student engagement during sessions. Conclusion: Integrated clinical skills sessions improved student interest, engagement and promoted student confidence. It should be implemented in undergraduate medical teaching curriculum. Backgrounds: Commonly, doctors migrate for postgraduate study in African and Middle-east countries to western countries. In this study, we would like to know the percentage of graduates who intended to study abroad and determine the factors of their traveling.Material and methods: This is cross-sectional questionnaire survey. Medical students were asked about their future specialty preference, reasons, and site of training. Also, some demographic data were collected. The data was analyzed by SPSS. P value of < 0.05 was considered significant. Result and Discussion: 197 students responded to our survey and filled the questionnaire properly. Participants knew about future specialty from the teacher, the internet, senior college and advice from a family member with rate 83 (42.1%), 42 (22.8%), 41 (21.3%), and 27(13.7%) respectively. One hundred five (53.3%) of the responders preferred to get their specialty training outside Sudan while the remainder 92(46.7%) preferred local training.The commonest specialty selected among both group are medicine and surgery respectively. Obstetrics and gynecology are selected mainly among students who prefer local training 14 out of 15 totally, with statistically significant (p-value = 0.0001). Residency has significant related to the site of training with (P value 0.03). International recognition and advanced facilities are the commonest cause of traveling abroad among the students. While free hands on training and social reasons are the most common causes of home postgraduates training.Conclusion: More than fifty percent of the participant prefers abroad post-graduates training. The factors which influents site training can be defined as "Pull and Push" factors.

Background: The aim of medical education is to produce competent, physically and mentally strong health professionals, as they are going to be the pillars of the future health care system. Stress is one of the most common and process-oriented obstacles in medical education. It often exerts a negative effect on the academic performance, physical health, and psychological well-being of the students. Dealing with overloaded medical curriculum, competing with peers, being away from home and meeting high expectations imposed by parents and society to excel is among the common stressful transitions at this stage.Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out amongst 352 undergraduate medical students of a private medical college in a rural area of Maharashtra during April to October 2019. The structured questionnaire was used to record the data. Collected data was used to assess the severity of mental health issues among medical students.Results: Majority 194 (55.11%) students were in the age of 18 to 20 years followed by 141 (40.06%) were in 21 to 23 years. There were 196 (55.68%) girl students and 156 (44.32%) boys. According to the various categories, 80 (22.73%) of the students had low stress scores, followed by 76 (21.59%) in minimal. A highly significant difference in stress scores was seen between boys and girls, which was more in boys.Conclusions: Study concluded that undergraduate medical students perceive minimal to very high stress presented as various systems that vary with the year of study and gender wise too. There is a further need to look into the various causes of stress.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perception of undergraduate students of United Medical and dental college towards objective structured clinical examination as an assessment tool. MATERIAL & METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study included undergraduate medical students, RESULTS: 153 students who completely filled the proforma were included in study among them 31% were male and 69% were females. Mostly agreed that stations in OSCE were simple and easily interpretable and assessed practical skills thoroughly. Majority of students accepted that skills inquired were taught in clinics, stations were according to course and stations were appropriately timed. 66 % confirmed that adequate instructions were provided before exam. 84.31% believed that OSCE is preferable to viva. 57.51% of candidates stated that examiners during OSCE were attentive and gracious but 20.91 % objected it , while 21.57% remained neutral. Almost half of examinees labelled it as comprehensive clinical assessment .Overall, 67.97 % perceived OSCE as demanding and tough assessment. Finally views of students for statement that OSCE is unbiased, reliable and valid were positive in 50.32%.There was a significant difference in the opinion of male and female( p-value is less than 0.05) in statement that OSCE thoroughly assessed practical skills, stations were according to course of instruction, Adequate instructions were provided before exam, superior and preferable to viva, assists in improvement of clinical skills, demanding and tough and finally OSCE was unbiased, reliable and valid CONCLUSION: OSCE was perceived as fair, comprehensive, un-biased format of examination but believed it was more stressful than traditional examination methods . BACKGROUND: Today, mobile phones are recognised as an inseparable part of our daily lives, facilitating communication between users. Based on the studies, addiction to cell phones can lead to several complications including depression, anxiety, anger, and aggression. AIM: This study aimed to investigate nomophobia (no mobile phone phobia) among medical students of Islamic Azad University, Tehran Branch. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 students studying in different majors of medical sciences in Islamic Azad University, Tehran Branch, from 2016 to 2017. Demographic data of all participants were recorded in a data sheet. In the next stage, a questionnaire was designed by the researcher to evaluate the effect of age, gender, education, and the duration of using cell phone variables on discomfort, anxiety, and insecurity due to lack of access to cell phone or other related issues. Raw data were analysed using SPSS statistical software version 21. The significance level was considered P < 0.05. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that participants with lower mean age felt more discomfort, anger, anxiety, and insecurity due to lack of access to mobile phones and other related issues compared to other people. However, no variable was statistically significant (P-value > 0.05). Except anxiety, results showed that longer duration of mobile phone use might lead to a significant decrease in discomfort, anger, and insensibility variables among users (P-value > 0.05). The incidence of nomophobia (with its different aspects) was significantly lower in females (P-value > 0.05). Also, in participants with higher educational status, the nomophobia was recorded to be more frequent (P-Value > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Understanding the pattern of nomophobia occurrence among cell phone users can facilitate our path to prevent its harms including discomfort, anger, anxiety, and feeling of insecurity among users of technology.

ABSTRAKSkizofrenia merupakan gangguan atau kumpulan gangguan mental yang mempengaruhi pemikiran, persepsi, dan perilaku sosial dan penyebabnya sebagian besar masih belum diketahui. Pengobatan farmakologis skizofrenia menggunakan obat-obat golongan antipsikotik terutama dalam jangka waktu lima tahun setelah episode akut pertama muncul. Penggunaan antipsikotik berpotensi menimbulkan kejadian hospitalisasi yang dapat menurunkan kualitas hidup pasien terkait penurunan fungsi sosial pasien skizofrenia. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis potensi jenis kelamin dan jenis pengobatan antipsikotik sebagai faktor prediktor hospitalisasi pasien skizofrenia. Analisis cross sectional jenis kelamin dan penggunaan antipsikotik dilakukan pada rekam medis pasien rawat inap di Rumah Sakit Jiwa Menur Surabaya Bulan Oktober 2017 yang didiagnosis skizofrenia (ICD-10 F20). Faktor prediktor hospitalisasi pasien  dianalisis menggunakan uji Chi-square for goodness of fit yang membandingkan perbedaan jumlah frekuensi antar kategori pada masing-masing faktor prediktor. Faktor jenis terapi antipsikotik digolongkan menjadi tipikal, atipikal, dan kombinasi. Hasil menunjukan terdapat perbedaan jumlah pasien pada tiga jenis terapi yang berbeda (p-value 0,000) dimana sebagian besar pasien yang dirawat dirumah sakit menerima antipsikotik tipikal (47,41%). Perbandingan jenis kelamin tidak menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan pada pasien yang dirawat. Dapat disimpulkan jenis antipsikotik tipikal kemungkinan dapat mempengaruhi kejadian hospitalisasi pada pasien skizofrenia. Kata kunci: Skizofrenia, antipsikotik tipikal, antipsikotik atipikal, hospitalisasi.ABSTRACTSchizophrenia is a mental disorder that affect thought, perception, and social behaviours. Most of causes of schizophrenia are unknown. Pharmacological treatments of schizophrenia use antipsychotics especially during  five years after first acute episode observed. The use of antipsychotics potentially lead to hospitalization that can affect to patients’ quality of life. This study was aimed to analyze the potential of gender and types of antipsychotic treatments as predictor factors in hospitalization of schizophrenia patients. Cross sectional analysis in gender and types of antipsycotics was conducted to medical records of inpatients at Rumah Sakit Jiwa Menur Surabaya diagnozed with Schizophrenia (ICD-10 Code F20) in October 2017. Chi-square for goodness of fit test was used to determine the difference amount of patients among different gender and different types of antipsychotics used as predictor factors. Types of antipsychotics used was classified into three categories which were patients who received typical antipsychotic, atypical antipsycotic and combination. The results showed that there was a significant difference in amount of hospitalized patients who received typical antipsychotic, atypical antipsycotic and combination (p-value 0,000) which most of hospitalized patients received atypical antipsychotics (47,41%).On the other hand, the proportion of gender among hospitalized patients was found have no significant difference. In conclusion, types of antipsychotics used might related to the hospitalization of schizophrenia patients.Keywords: Schizophrenia, Typical antipsychotic, Atypical antipsychotic, Hospitalization.

Abstract Background: As the number of Asian and African students studying medicine in China increases, it is imperative to evaluate the educational experiences of these international medical students (IMSs). This study was intended to investigate opinions of China-educated IMSs towards the medical curriculum and the impact of Chinese language capability on their clinical studies.Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was circulated to the final-year IMSs during the graduation time from May 2019 to July 2019 in 4 universities in China. The questionnaire asked IMSs to assess the quality of medical education and provide a self-evaluation of their Chinese language capability. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine whether IMSs’ Chinese language capability was associated with their clinical experiences and clinical competence.Results: Overall, we received 209 valid responses, of which 76.1% were satisfied with the quality of medical education. Genetics, physics, and mathematics were perceived as the least relevant basic courses for medical practice, and 21.5% of student reported that community-oriented medicine was a neglected subject. Notably, 58.9% of students had positive views about discussions on ethical topics during their clerkships, and 71.3% believed they had acquired sufficient clinical skills to begin a residency program. Chinese speaking skills and communication initiatives were found to be critical factors in influencing students’ clinical experiences and competence. Conclusion: This study presents the perceptions of China-educated IMSs towards medical curriculum from various aspects. Results show that language influences the education experiences of IMSs. Collectively, these results indicate that the curriculum for IMSs in China should be more problem-based and community-engaged to improve IMSs’ learning experiences and preparation for community deployment. Furthermore, training curriculum for the oral Chinese should be improved to equip IMSs with sufficient language competence to enable them to efficiently carry out clinical clerkship and rotations. Our findings provide evidence for benchmarking medical curricular codifications tailored for Asian and African students.

Introduction: Pelvic examination of patients in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology (Ob-Gyn) is an important skill for medical students. Because it involves a physical assessment of the patients' genitalia, patients may refuse medical students to participate in the examination, affecting the medical students' clinical skills. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Naresuan University Hospital to determine the factors that influence the acceptance of medical student participation in the pelvic examinations. A total of 198 out-patients from the Ob-Gyn department were included. A Likert scale questionnaire was designed which featured topics on patients’ attitudes and circumstances related to medical student involvement in gynaecological procedures. Results: The majority of outpatients (71.7%) accepted the participation of medical students in pelvic examinations. Patients with prior experiences in physical and pelvic examination by medical students had a significant impact on the patients' acceptance (P-value<0.001). The patients’ impressions had an influence on the decision to accept students in pelvic exam participation. Approximately 40% of patients were concerned about the breach of confidentiality. However, most patients strongly agreed that allowing medical students to perform pelvic examination would benefit their medical education. Conclusion: Most of the participants permitted medical students to participate in pelvic examinations and preferred that the medical instructor be the one to request permission. The patients’ impressions of medical students were crucial factors that significantly influence their decision whether to allow or deny them to participate in the procedure. Disclosure of confidentiality was found to be matters of concern to most patients.

Medical education provides both knowledge and clinical skills to students. Clinical skills program including bedside teaching is considered an irreplaceable part of the undergraduate medical curriculum. COVID-19 pandemic has halted the delivery of effective clinical skills to medical students which has especially affected the final year students. So, we need to find an alternate approach to teach clinical skills to medical students in this era of COVID-19. This public health crisis has also demonstrated the significance of resilience and adaptability in the medical education system and the need to inculcate these values in our generation of medical students. This will help the students to complete their transition from a ‘student’ to a ‘doctor’. This article highlights the experience of a final year medical student in the pre- and post-COVID-19 period, problems faced by final year medical students during this crisis, and effective ways to cope up with them.
