The purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not there is a significant effect of silent short movie on EFL writing achievement of the vocational high school students. This study was quasi-experimental using a nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest design. There were 61 students who were selected randomly from the 10 classes of tenth-graders of the 6th State Vocational School in Samarinda. The instruments used in the study was writing test. The result revealed that the vocational high school tenth grade students who were taught by silent short movie (M = 8.01, SD = .32) got significantly different achievement in EFL writing than did the vocational high school tenth grade students who were not taught by silent short, t(58) = -2.22, p = .030. This result suggests that the writing aspects which the students significantly outperformed were text organization, sentence formation, grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, and tidiness.

The purposes of this research are to describe the implementation of the teacher in teaching speaking descriptive text using facebook for Senior High School Students, and to describe the achievement of the students in speaking using facebook. This study was descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from the tenth grade students of senior high school in Sidoarjo. The data collecting technique used instruments of observation field note, interview and test. From the observation field note was described that the implementation of teaching learning process given were: First, the way of speaking descriptive text was explained to the students. Second, the examples of generic structure of descrptive text were displayed. Third, the way to describe picture profile from the Facebook was explained to the students. The last, the pleasant atmosphere was created while the students tried to operate Facebook for describing the profile of someone. Further, the results of test had shown that the  students’ scores were good; with the average scores > 75. They show that the technique of Teaching Speaking Descriptive Text Using Facebook For Senior High School students is good for teaching speaking.

Before designing, selecting, or implementing a lesson, understanding the knowledge that your students already have (or do not have) is helpful, regardless of the topic that you are teaching. When I began to teach geometric transformations to a class of tenth-grade honors geometry students, I attempted to assess their knowledge. What I learned about these students' initial understandings of geometric transformations was surprising, as well as extremely useful for planning instruction. Knowing in advance the difficulties that students may experience when learning new mathematical concepts and skills can help prepare teachers for the classroom.

Problem posing is a learning approach that trains students to be able to process and communicate mathematical problems based on information obtained. This study aims to describe the ability of high school students to pose problems on the topic of system of linear equations in two variables (SLETV). This study used a quantitative descriptive study involving 60 high school students in the East Surabaya area. The results showed that students were able to submit 60 problems, consisting of 54 problems can be categorized and 6 problems could not be categorized. Based on the semantic structure of mathematics, 17 students (31.48%) were able to pose problems using 1-relationship, 13 students (24.07%) were able to pose problems using 2-relationships, 13 students (24.07%) were able to raise problems using 3-relationships, and 11 students (20.37%) were able to pose problems using 4-relationships. Based on language structure (syntax), 13 students (24.07%) were able to pose problems using assignment propositions, as many as 17 students (31.48%) were able to pose problems using relationship propositions, and 14 students (25.93%) were able pose a problem using a presupposition proposition.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/2179460X14491This paper presents a proposal for the introduction of linear programming in high school considering teaching methods, the teacher and student profiles, and a non-flexibilization of the curriculum. This proposal came as a result of a Stricto Sensu research, which deals with simple problems that encourage high school students to understand Linear Programming by means of a contextualization of studied topics, as resolution of linear equations. The aim is to show to these students the range of real-world problems that can be solved using Linear Programming, with the application of methods to solve systems of linear equations and the support of mathematical softwares. The proposal presented here has not been applied in classrooms yet, but it is expected that students will be able to understand in a contextualized view where linear systems can be applied, the importance of mathematical modeling and the need of to use a mathematical software to solve real big data problems.

This article reports on a qualitative study using focus group discussions about alcohol binge drinking with tenth grade male high-school students. Groups were run separately with binge drinking and non-binge drinking adolescents in three different communities. The Theory of Planned Behaviour with two additional constructs was used to provide a theoretical framework for the semi-structured discussions and for the analysis of the data. Although the findings are complex some clear differences did emerge between binge drinkers and non-binge drinkers and between participants from the three different communities. The binge drinkers perceived positive outcomes from binge drinking, were embedded within a peer group culture of binge drinking, and found few obstacles of obtaining alcohol. The non-binge drinkers were more concerned with longer term life goals and were motivated to comply with family pressures not to drink excessively. The implications of these findings for preventive programs and for future research are discussed.

The purpose of learining Arabic is to master all four language skills, listening, speaking, reading dan writing skills. Most students have difficulty to mastering writing skills. Difficulties in mastering writing skills were also felt by Sabilul Muttaqin High School students in Pungging Mojokerto. It can be seen from the Arabic test scores of students who still have not reached the KKM (Minimum Completation Criteria) 75. Based on these problems, researchers want to use tondo maker comic learning media to improve students’ writing skills in Arabic lessons. This study uses a quantitative method to determine the effectiveness of the comics tondo maker media to improve Arabic writing skills. This research was conducted at Sabilul Muttaqin Mojokerto High School with tenth grade as a sample 66 students. In an effort to collect data, researchers used the method of observation, interviews, documentation, questionnaires and test. The results of this study indicate that the tondo maker comic media is effective in an effort to improve student writing skills based on the results of T count is 3,255 greater than T table, which is 2,30. From these results indicate that Ho is rejected and the results of sig Tailed 0.003 is smaller than 0.005 which indicates Ho’s rejection and Ha’s acceptance.
