Nozzle of RKX100 rocket contributes 30 percent to the total weight of the structure, so that allowing further research on weight reduction. An alternative for this is by substitution of massive graphite, which is currently used as thermal protector in the nozzle, with thin layer of HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) thermal spray layer. A series of study on the characteristics of various type of HVOF coating material have been being conducted. This paper presented the investigation on the HVOF Cr2C3-NiCr thermal spray coating, in particular, the optimization of bonding strength by varying surface roughness of substrates. Characterization included bonding strength test, micro hardness measurement and micro structural observation with optical microscope and scanning electron micriscope (SEM). The results showed that grit blasting pressure increass the surface roughness from 4,54 um to 5.72 um at the pressure of 6 bar. Average micro hardness of the coating was 631 VHN 300. Coating applied to the surface with rougness of 5.42 um possessed the highest bonding strength, 44 MPa. Microstructural observation by using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed dense lamellae structure with variable composition. High coating adherence was found to be due to mechanical interlocking.

<div style="text-align: justify;"><div>Various concentration of silver (Ag) dopant on ZnO (ZnO:Ag) 2-8 mol% with solgel method were deposited on glass substrates that has been heated to a temperature of 250°C for 1h using a thermal spray coating technique and then annealed on 400C for 1h. The obtained samples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The effect of various Ag dopant on ZnO on the microstructure are investigated. The results showed that the microstructure of ZnO:Ag are the surface of ZnO make ganglia phase with Ag grains covered the surface. The addition concentration of Ag promotes the growth of ganglia phase and grain size. The surface of ZnO:Ag ≤4 mol% the growth grain Ag is more dominant than the growth of ZnO. The dopant Ag with a concentration of 4-8mol% ganglia structure begin to form with the presence of grains. Obtained the surface of ZnO:Ag 4 mol% begins to growth ganglia phase with the largest graindiameter is 304.8 nm. ©2016 JNSMR UIN Walisongo. All rights reserved.</div></div>

We have used High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating process to obtain tungsten carbide coatings on steel. It is important to control the powder quality and surface roughness of the substrate in the thermal spray coating process to obtain good adherence. The adhesive strength is greatly effected by the interfacial impurities. Most commonly used in the thermal spray industry is Al2O3 grit abrasive for good surface roughness of steel substrate to produce anchor patterns for the coating. The previous studies indicated that some fine Al2O3 particles are trapped in the rough surface grooves during this process. The ring shear test method, described previously, appears to give the most accurate results on shear adhesive strength. The ring shear strength test was comprised of a 0.02” thick and 0.25” wide ring coating on a 1” diameter cylindrical substrate rod. This rod is placed in a disk with a cylindrical hole of the rod size and an incremental pressure is applied on the rod.

This work is a contribution towards the understanding of wire bond integrity and reliability in relation to their microstructural and mechanical properties in semiconductor packaging.The effect of surface roughness and hardness of leadframe on the bondability of Au wedge bond still requires detail analysis. Two type of leadframes namely leadframe A and leadframe B were chosen and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope were used to inspect the surface morphology of leadframes and the quality of created Au wedge bond after wire bonding process. It was found that there were significant differences in the surface morphologies between these two leadframes. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) which was utilized to measure the average roughness, Ra of lead finger confirms that leadframe A has the highest Ra with value of 166.46 nm compared to that of leadframe B with value of 85.89 nm. While hardness value of different lead finger from the selected leadframe A and B obtained using Vicker microhardness tester are 180.9 VH and 154.2VH respectively.

This experimental study investigates the effect of tightening speed and coating on both the torque – tension relationship and wear pattern in threaded fastener applications. The fastener torque – tension relationship is highly sensitive to normal variations in the coefficients of friction between threads and between the turning head and the surface of the joint. Hence, the initial level of the joint clamp load and the overall integrity and reliability of a bolted assembly is significantly influenced by the friction coefficients. The effect of repeated tightening and loosening is also investigated using M12, Class 8.8, fasteners with and without zinc coating. The torque – tension relationship is examined in terms of the non-dimensional nut factor K. The wear pattern is examined by monitoring the changes in surface roughness using a WYKO optical profiler and by using a LECO optical microscope. A Hitachi S-3200N Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is used to examine the contact surfaces, under the fastener head, after each tightening/loosening cycle. Experimental data on the effect of variables and the tightening speed, fastener coating and repeated tightening on the nut factor are presented and analyzed for M8 and M12, class 8.8, fasteners.

C. C. Berndt advanced investigations of mechanical properties of thermal spray coatings under 4-point bending. He found that this investigation method is sensitive to the mechanical properties of thermal spray coatings.This paper contains the detailed investigation results for thermal spray coatings of zirconium dioxide under 4-point bending, i.e. tests of the specimens subjected to spraying at varying conditions and pre-test soaking with the various duration at 1100 °С.It was established how the mechanical properties of thermal spray coatings changed depending on the spraying mode and high temperature soaking. The test results show that the double heat treatment of coatings is more preferable than one-time heat treatment as it make the properties change linearly. It is more easily controllable during operation of the components with thermal spray coating.
