The HDI has played an influential role in the debate on human development for many years. However, no index is perfect in the HDI. It can be argued that the current HDI does not totally reflect human development performance, and thus proper rankings for some countries. Therefore, this article aims to construct a new composite index for the development performance of a sample of 30 organizations for OECD countries by adding a fourth indicator, namely the employment rate to the calculation of HDI. Including employment factors in HDI as a new indicator has not only made the index more comprehensive but also presented a more suitable dimension for assessing the development performance of countries. By considering these factors, it is hoped that people will get a decent income in order to achieve a level of welfare.

However, no index is perfect and neither is the HDI of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This paper aims to construct a new composite index for the development performance of a sample of 30 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries by adding a fourth indicator, namely the unemployment index, to the calculation of HDI. The addition of the unemployment factor to the HDI as a new indicator has the potential to make the index more comprehensive and present a suitable approach for assessing the development performance of countries.

Purpose of the study: Firstly, to construct a modified human development index by incorporating new dimensions (democracy and employment). Secondly, to measure and compare human development progress in Indonesian provinces. Thirdly, to examine the nexus between human development, economic growth, and democracy during the period 2010-2017. Methodology: Principle Component Analysis (PCA) method is employed to combining components into one index (composite index) which we call MHDI. The panel simultaneous equation model is applied to examine the nexus between human development, economic growth, and democracy. Main Findings: There were significant ranking differences between MHDI and HDI-UNDP in 24 provinces of 33 Indonesian provinces. The most significant ranking differences were found in several provinces, especially Maluku, West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Central Kalimantan. The study found a strong two-way relationship between human development and economic growth as well as between human development and democracy. Applications of this study: This study recommends that human development policies supported by rapid economic growth and democratic stability should be one of the development priorities through government spending and support from private investment (the private sector) which focuses on the development of education and health infrastructure throughout the Indonesian province. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study employs different methods for constructing a human development index by incorporating a new dimension (democracy and employment).

Abstract Although employment growth is propagated as being crucial to reduce poverty across EU and OECD countries, the actual impact of employment growth on poverty rates is still unclear. This study presents novel estimates of the association between macro-level trends in women’s employment and trends in poverty, across 15 OECD countries from 1971 to 2013. It does so based on over 2 million household-level observations from the LIS Database, using Kitagawa–Blinder–Oaxaca (KBO) decompositions. The results indicate that an increase of 10% points in women’s employment rate was associated with a reduction of about 1% point of poverty across these countries. In part, this reduction compensated for developments in men’s employment that were associated with higher poverty. However, in the Nordic countries no such poverty association was found, as in these countries women’s employment rates were very high and stable throughout the observation period. In countries that initially showed marked increases in women’s employment, such as the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Canada, and the United States, the initial increases in women’s employment rates were typically followed by a period in which these trends levelled off. Hence, our findings first and foremost suggest that improving gender equality in employment is associated with lower poverty risks. Yet, the results also suggest that the potential of following an employment strategy to (further) reduce poverty in OECD countries has, to a large extent, been depleted.

ObjectivesRecent studies have demonstrated worsened mental health in relatively highly developed countries impacted by social inequalities and unemployment. Here, we investigate (1) whether mental health issues are differently or similarly affected by these social factors and (2) whether their effects on mental health are related or unrelated to each other.SettingAnalysis at the country level among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries (n=36). Data on social indicators were collected from OECD and the United Nations Development Programme databases. Data on the prevalence of mental issues were obtained from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s Global Burden of Disease study 2017.ParticipantsNo involvement of participants.Primary and secondary outcome measuresUsing linear regression models, we investigated the relative contribution played by human development (as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI)), social inequalities (Gini index) and unemployment (unemployment rate) on the prevalence of 10 mental health issues. We then measured the relationship between the socioeconomic factors’ effects on mental issues using 2×2 Pearson’s correlation test and principal component analysis.ResultsFirst, the overall effect of each socioeconomic factor on a combination of mental health disorders was large (r range: 0.51 to 0.76; p<0.002). However, the influence of social factors on mental health was relative to each mental issue (r range: −0.34 to 0.74). Second, the socioeconomic factors’ effects on mental health showed strong interdependence (rHDI-Gini=0.93, rHDI-unemploy=0.81, runemploy-Gini=0.84; p<0.001. Principal component analysis demonstrated that the first principal component of the three variables (rHDI, rGini, runemploy) explained 91.5% of the variance.ConclusionThese results implore a reanalysis of the socioeconomic determinants of mental health where (1) the heterogeneity of mental health issues would be taken into account and (2) each socioeconomic indicator’s effect would be analysed and interpreted in conjunction with the others.

The significant a reason of female poverty is that in general, women aren't considered to be in the labour market. Women that are in the labour market either in lower status from men or perform informal jobs or get paid less money even when they're employed in the same jobs. Female employment rate or women's education level are indicator of female poverty. The aim of this paper is to analyse female poverty in Turkey and selected OECD countries. This study obtained the female employment rate and women's education level data from the Economic Co-operation and Development database for the years between 2008-2019. Graphic by these data were analyzed comparative data analysis. In addition, specifically for the analysis of structure of women's employment in Turkey was to get data related to part-time employment, informal jobs and unpaid family workers from Turkish Statistical Institute. The results show that both women in labour market and women's education levels are extremely low level in Turkey compared to selected OECD countries. Part-time employment, informal jobs and unpaid family workers have place in women's employment. When women's employment increases it's expected to see that women poverty decreases. But women in Turkey mostly works in informal jobs or flexible working hours. This situation isn't enough effective enough to struggle fight female poverty and this resulted working women poverty. Firstly, policies should be developed to improve women will have increased participation in the qualified workforce and to length of stay in education by governments.
