The research was aimed to study the potential of sago starch as an edible film or edible wrapper, which is used as a barrier to mass transfer. The edible film was made from sago starch with the addition of nutmeg pectin at concentrations of 0%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by adding glycerol as much as 20% w/w. The results showed that the addition of nutmeg pectin and glycerol was able both to improve film characteristics and to control mass transfer. Addition of nutmeg pectin caused an increase in the Water Vapor Permeability (WVP) value of the film. Edible sago starch films can be used as a dodol packaging material because it protects products from oxidation and fungi, and is a better barrier from oxygen when compared to synthetic films. The increase in nutmeg pectin concentration caused an increase in WVP and exponential oxygen permeability. Keywords: edible film, sago, wrapping

Apple starch films were obtained from apples harvested at 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after full bloom (DAFB). Mechanical properties and water vapor permeability (WVP) were evaluated. The apple starch films at 70 DAFB presented higher values in the variables of tensile strength (8.12 MPa), elastic modulus (3.10 MPa) and lower values of water vapor permeability (6.77 × 10−11 g m−1 s−1 Pa−1) than apple starch films from apples harvested at 60, 80 and 90 DAFB. Therefore, these films were chosen to continue the study incorporating ellagic acid (EA). The EA was added at three concentrations [0.02% (FILM-EA0.02%), 0.05% (FILM-EA0.05%) and 0.1% (FILM-EA0.1%) w/w] and compared with the apple starch films without EA (FILM-Control). The films were characterized by their physicochemical, optical, morphological and mechanical properties. Their thermal stability and antioxidant capacity were also evaluated. The FILM-Control and FILM-EA0.02% showed a uniform surface, while FILM-EA0.05% and FILM-EA0.1% showed a rough surface and insoluble EA particles. Compared to FILM-Control, EA modified the values of tensile strength, elasticity modulus and elongation at break. The antioxidant capacity increased as EA concentration did. EA incorporation allowed obtaining films with higher antioxidant capacity, capable of blocking UV light with better mechanical properties than film without EA.

This paper explains and demonstrates the effects of beeswax on functional and structural properties of soy protein isolate films, containing different glycerol. The results showed that percentage elongation at break, water vapor permeability, and transparency of soy protein isolate films decreased when the beeswax content increased, but tensile strength and oxygen permeability increased. The higher the glycerol content, the higher the film water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, and transparency. The results of differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that beeswax cross-linked with soy protein isolate molecules via connecting with glycerol, composed the film matrix.

Starch-based edible films are gaining huge interest in food packaging industries. In the present work, avocado seed starch (ASS) was extracted and used to develop an edible film. The influence of four important process factors, starch, agar, sorbitol, and Tween-20, was studied on one of the important barrier properties, water-vapor permeability (WP), of developed edible film. The three-level RSM design with Box–Behnken approach was carried out to investigate the film property, WP. ASS-based edible films were prepared by the casting method. The results revealed that the increment in the contents of Tween-20 and sorbitol reduces the WP of the film. Using the response surface analysis, the effect of the aforementioned factors was analyzed; they showed significant impact on WP. To predict the influence of the selected process parameters, a second-order polynomial equation was constructed. Additionally, Pareto analysis of variance was employed over the obtained results to investigate the significance of the developed process model.

The effect of monoglyceride on microstructural, barrier and mechanical properties of casted yam starch films were investigated in different relative humidities (RH) and compared with glycerol-starch films. A single screw extruder was used to produce the starch - monoglyceride complex before film production and this process was effective to inhibit the phase separation in films. The addition of the hydrophobic compound reduced hydrophobicity, transparency and water vapor permeability of films. This later value for starch-glycerol film (1.7 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) was higher than starch (1.2 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) and monoglyceride-starch films (1.0 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1). Films containing glycerol had higher relative crystallinity (B and V H) with a slight increase at higher RH values, while for monoglyceride films, the crystallinity was constant. Monoglyceride-starch films presented poor mechanical properties when compared to glycerol- starch ones but they presented a stable behavior under different relative humidities.

In order to improve the strength of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/xylan composite films and endow them with ultraviolet (UV) shielding ability, TiO2-KH550 nanoparticles was synthesized and added into the PVA/xylan matrix. The TiO2-KH550 nanoparticle dispersed well in the 0.04% sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) solution under ultrasonic and stirring treatments. Investigations on the properties of the films showed that TiO2-KH550 had the positive impact on improving the strength, moisture, and oxygen barrier properties of the composite films. The maximum tensile strength (27.3 MPa), the minimum water vapor permeability (2.75 × 10−11 g·m−1·s−1·Pa−1), and oxygen permeability (4.013 cm3·m−2·24 h−1·0.1MPa−1) were obtained under the addition of 1.5% TiO2-KH550. The tensile strength of TiO2-KH550 reinforced composite film was increased by 70% than that of the pure PVA/xylan composite film, and the water vapor and oxygen permeability were decreased by 31% and 41%, respectively. Moreover, the UV transmittance of the film at the wavelength of 400 nm was almost zero when adding ≈1.5~2.5% (weight ratio, based on the total weight of PVA and xylan) of TiO2-KH550, which indicated the PVA/xylan composite films were endowed with an excellent UV light shielding ability.
