Marvel Moreno’s En diciembre llegaban las brisas is one of Colombia’s least studied masterpieces. Critical attention on her work has focused on the fraught interaction between female sexuality and patriarchal forces in society. However, while female sexual desire plays a key role in the novel, it is not the most important type of desire in the text. This article analyzes the various types of desire in En diciembre llegaban las brisas. It finds that curiosity (desire for knowledge) plays an essential role in the narrator’s emotional and artistic apprenticeship and is the novel’s structural principle. This understanding of curiosity in terms of desire sheds new light on Moreno’s work and could prove useful in the study of other similarly autobiographical texts.

In the mythology-inspired novel Menaka’s Choice (2016), Kavita Kané discovers that the female body is continuously perceived both as an object of sexual desire and as an individual being by disrupting the conventional understanding of Apsara Menaka. Using Foucault’s concept of docile bodies and organic individuality the paper studies how power, in the form of ‘system’, imposes docility on women’s bodies. The paper weaves the potential for feminist thought as the novel rediscovers the recondite experiences that have been shrouded for centuries by giving central position to silent agents of Hindu mythology. Eventually, it attempts to analyse the act of seduction from the context of gender and how the individual tries to resist that disciplinary system.

It is obvious that Literature is an important subject to be studied since it reflects every single aspect of human life such as happyness, sadness, truth, justice, respect, corage, faith, and other urgent elements. In this article, the researcher investigates moral values where it becomes one of the aspects to be analysed in Literature where the novel of “The House on Mango Street” written by Sandra Cineros is chosen by the researcher as the subject of the research with some important considerations. The criteria of moral values used by the researcher is based on the theory proposed by Kinner et.al. that consist of six major parts. In addition, the design of this research is qualitative research since the researcher tries to explore the moral values as reflected in the novel of “The House on Mango Street” descriptively. As the result, the researcher finds that all of the elements of moral values exist in the content of the novel except the point of “respect and caring for others” exactly in the element of “to not hurt others”. Meanwhile, the researcher also explains parts of novel subtitles which consist the facts which oppose with some elements of moral values.

Abstract:The article argues for an approach to studies of sexuality in Africa that considers the subject of female sexuality from the perspective of capacity and power. Based on data from Mozambique, and informed by conceptual frameworks as well as by research findings from other African countries, the article investigates preparations of the erotic female body such as body tattoos, hip belts of glass beads, and elongated labia. It also discusses how “traditional” sexual capacity-building has been transferred from rural contexts into urban settings, empowering young women in love relationships with older, richer men.

This article examines how race consciousness mediates the performance and experience of femininity, female respectability, and sexual desires in Irene Sabatini’s debut novel, The Boy Next Door. It explores how assumptions of racialised female bodyhood, femininity, and sexuality are constructed and transmitted within an intergenerational framework of the mother-daughter relationship between Lindiwe Bishop and her mother, Mrs Bishop. I argue that in the novel the notion of respectable womanhood is mediated through the desires, the sexual behaviour and the proper conduct of the female sexualised and racialised body. Reading the novel from a theoretical perspective of “hegemonic” and “subordinated” femininities, which takes into account how “other axes of domination such as race, class, sexuality, and age mold a hegemonic femininity, I analyse how the ideology of whiteness mediates discursive performances of femininity, which place certain kinds of femaleness associated with whiteness as superior to others—and how this consciousness also influences ideas about respectability in relation to sexuality.

In an analysis of the linguistic, feminine and spatial features of Clarice Lispector’s A paixão segundo G.H., this article proposes an alternative reading of the text as an aesthetic treatise on the gendered female body and female sexuality. Contemplating the textual occurrences of Freudian and Lacanian jouissance, I trace the protagonist’s physical trajectory in the spatial dimension of her apartment. Through an analysis of the etymological ties between Christ’s πασχειn to G.H.’s paixão, textual similarities to Joyce and religious linguistic wordplay, I demonstrate the particularly biological and feminized specificities of G.H.’s passion. Drawing from the theoretical work of Kristeva, Cixous and Irigaray, I suggest that G.H. both supports and refutes the Freudian paradigm of female sexuality. Through a discursive and structural analysis, this article will also make a case for a reading of the novel as the textual representation of female autoeroticism and poetic climax.

Abstract The subject matter of this paper is the interplay of the female body, law and the technologies of “domestic” animals in the novel Burial Rites (2013), a fictionalised biography of the last woman executed in Iceland. Drawing consistent parallels between the convicted woman and animals - lambs in the “killing pen” in particular - Hannah Kent problematises long-standing human institutions and traditions such as law, death sentence, patriarchy and the (ab)use of animals. Moreover, she demonstrates that “the animal” and “the criminal” are mutually supportive socio-legal constructs realised on the bodies of sentient beings via identical technologies.

This article answers ongoing calls within critical sexuality scholarship to explore how constructions of women’s bodies influence and are influenced by broader sociocultural contexts. Specifically, this article offers a conceptual analysis of female sexual desire, highlighting the deeply political nature of its pathologization. We briefly explore dominant definitions and models of sexual desire to highlight the erasure of embodied desire as an important part of healthy female sexuality. The DSM-5 diagnosis of Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder is critically analyzed to highlight how desire differences are framed as gendered, individual problems which sidelines relational, contextual, and sociopolitical factors contributing to individual distress. When the language of desire is displaced by the language of interest (particularly when framed as receptivity), the capacity to theorize wanting and entitlement is undermined. We argue that the pathologization of diverse desires obscures possibilities for embodied wanting and neglects the consideration that all types of desire (absent, frequent, physical, emotional) may represent normal sexual variations.
