With the current issue, we welcome a new editorial policy for the Revista Interamericana de Psicología/Interamerican Journal of Psychology. We are proud of our history and would like to thank all past editors and members of the scientific committee who have made an effort in maintaining the journal, which to date has published contributions of some of the most important psychologists of the Americas and the world. It is our hope we will build upon those contributions that have been in the making for more than half a century with the new phase we begin today. We are honored that the selection committee and the board of directors of the Interamerican Psychological Society have entrusted us with this new editorial vision.

The 1974 election-period has been sustained intensively by the BRT (Belgian Radio and Television Corporation). The Board of Directors decided to do sa in order to accomplish the corporation's task of objective information. The political parties also used intensively the extra air-time accorded by the same Board of Directors, for their clection-campaign. As for all political parties all over the world, radio and even more television air-time, is seen as an indispensable instrument for diffusing party-coloured information.

The first WSSA international session was organized by the society's International Affairs Committee with approval of the Board of Directors. The committee's objective was to present a broad view of weed research in the world. To do this, we invited participants who were presently, or who had been, on the staff of one of the international agricultural research centers. We also invited Dr. M. Horowitz, the WSSA Honorary Member for 1979, to present information on his work in Israel.

To clarify thinking on the subject, the 1955 convention of the American Association of Workers for the Blind will devote time and discussion to various considerations in government provision of financial assistance to blind citizens. In anticipation, it seems appropriate to present here at least parts of the contents of two papers on the general subject that were presented last summer at the General Assembly of the World Council for the Welfare of the Blind in Paris, by Capt. M. C. Robinson and H. A. Wood, respectively. Incorporated herein also are pertinent resolutions adopted by the World Council and the Board of Directors of the American Association of Workers for the Blind. The World Council resolution (No. 8) consists of two paragraphs, each of which was originally adopted separately and which were subsequently combined as they appear here. The first paragraph is substantially the same as Resolution V of the International Conference of Workers for the Blind, held at Merton College, Oxford, in 1949; it is quoted in part also in the introductory sentences of Mr. Wood's paper below. At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the AAWB subsequent to the 1954 Paris meeting of the World Council, the Board's attitude toward that resolution (No. 8) is reported to have been discussed. After consideration, the Board is reported to have determined that any formal statement of policy could only be made by mandate of the Association membership except that reaffirmation of previously adopted policy could be made. This is what was done in the action quoted herein. The papers prepared for the Paris meeting were, of course, directed toward the international audience comprising the World Council and should be read with that fact in mind. Capt. Robinson is national director of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, for Western Canada, and president of the AAWB (1953–55); Mr. Wood is executive secretary of the North Carolina State Commission for the Blind.—Editor.

The voting scenario is rich and complex: democratic institutions typically call several kinds of elections, which often have different requirements in terms of costs and needed resources, and are exposed to different security risks. Some electoral events could target relatively small sets of voters, sparsely distributed across the country or even in the world: a typical example is the election for renewing the board of directors of an association or research center. On the other hand, Government or public-office elections typically involve a great number of voters who, in most part, are localized within a country or a regional area. As a consequence, the design, development and deployment of electronic voting systems suitable to accommodate the wide range of conflicting requirements emerging from such different voting scenarios is still a challenging issue. This chapter presents u-Vote, a solution which is able to operate in different deployment settings, so as to accommodate the peculiarities characterizing different voting scenarios, while striving to provide the best possible balance between security measures and convenience for voters.

Entrepreneurs tend to be self-styled “idea” people. They often believe they have the next “Big Concept”‐one which could change the world, reaffirm their self-worth, and, of course, make them and their venture team a fortune. In contrast, as they build a company to implement their business dream, entrepreneurs also tend to eschew or trivialize administrative details. Why should they waste their creative juices on minutia? As a result of this insensitivity to detail, these captains of capitalism often trip in their entrepreneurial journey. For example, they might: •Forget to remit payroll taxes on schedule. •Fail to document the justification underpinning the dismissal of a key employee. •Allow the company℉s liability insurance to lapse. •Neglect to report sales usage tax. •Verbally grant employee incentive stock options during an informal luncheon meeting, at a yet-to-be-determined exercise price and without the board of directors℉ approval.

This book traces the activities of the Study Centre on Late Mediaeval Civilisation, founded with premises in San Miniato in 2008, illustrating in detail the programmes of the initiatives carried out. The introductory essays by the chairman of the Scientific Committee, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and the two most recent Directors delineate the aims and objectives of the institution. Attention is focused in particular on the form of its links with the Italian and international late mediaeval and modern historiography of the last twenty-five years, underscoring its active and valid contribution to the development of such research. Finally, a packed schedule of conventions, seminars, conferences, training courses and other cultural initiatives complete the picture of one of the most renowned and prestigious entities in the sphere of studies on the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, Avon increased its representative force from 26,000 to more than 6 million women selling products around the world, and it became a leader in both the direct sales and cosmetics industries. Avon developed its iconic advertising campaign, “Ding Dong! Avon Calling!” which promoted both the distinctive door-to-door sales service to customers as well as a recruiting message to attract women to the business opportunity. Avon became established in new white suburban neighborhoods, then expanded into the African American market in the 1960s. In the 1960s, Avon worked to uphold affirmative action and equal opportunity laws, increasing the number of minority employees in its sales staff as well as its corporate offices and manufacturing facilities. Avon named two women to the board of directors in the 1970s, turning its attention to creating a supportive workplace for women. Public relations campaigns sought to rebrand the direct selling opportunity as a business on par with new career paths opening to women during second wave feminism.

Since this is my last gesture as President of the Association I should like to thank you all warmly for the honor you have done me in electing me as President and for the opportunity of working with the Board of Directors and with the Secretary, Michael Bonine, on your behalf. It also happens that I am just about to finish a book on the history of Islamic societies. In a very different way this project has also been a special privilege. I have been able to branch out from my basic and abiding interest in the Arab Middle East and from my studies in early Islamic history to learn something about Muslim peoples all over the world. To learn so much and to work out a way of presenting such a large subject in a coherent way has made this a wonderfully rewarding project. Like a great puzzle, it has occupied my mind for seven years. I hope that the book I am writing will return the rewards of this learning to the reader.
