Maternal Mortality is mostly caused by bleeding (32 %), hypertension during pregnancy (25 %). Infection (5 %), long parturition  5 %),  and chronic energy deficiency (27.66 %). The objective of this research was to find out of correlation Between Maternal  Anthropometry  (Body Weight, Mid Upper Arm Circumference, Fundal Height) And Reflex physiology Of Normal Newborn Babies In delivery room  of Regional Public Hospital Of Meuraxa Banda  Aceh. The research was conducted from September 4 to September 22, 2016. The descriptive  correlation design with cross sectional study approach was used in this research. There were thirty  research sample that were chosen by using accidental sampling method. The result of this research indicated that were was  no correlation between body Weight of pregnant woman with reflex physiology of their normal Newborn Babies In Delivery Room  Of Regional Public Hospital of Meuraxa Banda  Aceh (p Value 0.174). There was a correlation Between Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of pregnant women with reflex physiology of their normal Newborn Babies (p Value 0.020). There was also  a correlation between fundal height with reflex physiology of their normal Newborn Babies (p Value 0.000). Based on those result, it is suggest that the pregnant women should pay nurse attention to their health by doing regular check -ups during  pregnancy in order to prevent any complication. It is also suggested that the health worker keep enhancing the medical service, such us the measurement of body weight, MUAC and fundal height. Keywords: Anthropometry, reflex physiology, normal newborn babies

Introduction. Chronic energy deficieny (CED) is a condition of a body characterized by low body weight and low energy stores, possibly limited physical capacity due to deprivation of food over a long period time. Ministry of Health ( Kemenkes) showed that in 2015, 305 out of 100.000 death of pregnant women is realated to malnutriotion and CED. Objective. The aim of this study is to determine the overview of pregnant women nutritional status based on mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in Sundari Medan General Hospital. Method. The study was an observational descriptive study with a cross sectional design. The samples of this study consists of pregnant women from Sundari Medan Genaral Hospital, who had fulilled the inclusion and esclusion criteria by total sampling. Results.. Among 60 samples, the prevalance of Non-CED woman (85%) was found higher than the mild malnutrition (15%). Conclusion. Prevalance of CED pregnant women was found higher in risky age, middle educated and high income family.

: Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) is considered as a good indicator of maternal nutritional status in pregnant women. Very few studies have been done to establish a relationship between MUAC and birth weight of newborn. This study was carried out to analyze the relationship between MUAC and birth weight of newborn in a tertiary health care facility.This cross sectional study was conducted in 240term pregnant women. MUAC was measured to the nearest millimeters using a non-stretchable tape at the midpoint between acromian process and olecranon process. Newborn baby weight was measured within 24 hrs of birth. The association between MUAC and birth weight was established by linear regression analysis.The mean of MUAC among pregnant women delivering LBW was 21.68±2.27 cm which was significantly low (p<0.001) compared to women delivering normal babies (23.47±2.56 cm). There wasa positive correlation(r=0.32;p<0.05)between MUAC and birth weight of newborn.The cut off value of MUAC for the prediction of LBW in our study was found to be 22.59 cm with 62.77% sensitivity and 71.55% specificity.Among the various maternal factors for the prediction of LBW, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) can be correlated with birth weight outcome effectively.

Abstract Background One of the easiest and effective ways of predicting under nutrition is to use the Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) and the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). The dietary diversity score is a qualitative measure of food consumption reflecting an individual’s access to different food items and therefore is a proxy indicator of the nutritional status. The aim of the study was to assess whether the DDS and MUAC can be used to assess the nutritional status of pregnant women attending antenatal. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted at Chilenje level I Hospital in a township located in Lusaka city, Lusaka province. The study employed quantitative methods to collect and analyse data on the dietary patterns and if this can be used to assess the nutritional status of individuals 24 hours preceding the survey. Health facilities were selected using random sampling method and systematic sampling method was used to select a sample of 299 pregnant women. An interview schedule was used to collect data. Logistic regression was used to establish associations between DDS and MUAC. Results In this study, 44% of the women were in the lowest dietary diversity category, which indicates inadequate nutrient intake, 31% in the medium category and 24% in the high intake. Maternal weight was associated with a 0.08 cm increase in MUAC (95% CI; 0.74 – 0.93) and this was statistically significant. Marital status and age (95% CI; 0.83 – 0.93) were significantly associated with an increase in MUAC in the univariate analysis but when adjusted for other confounders this was not significant (95% CI; 0.81 – 1.00). Consumption of organ meat was associated with a 0.21cm increase in MUAC (95% CI; 0.04 - 0.97). Conclusion The study results indicated that 44% of the women had inadequate nutrient intake, indicating that the dietary diversity score can be used to predict malnutrition in pregnant women. The mid upper was negatively correlated with the 24hour dietary diversity score implying that we might not rely on this measurement to assess the nutritional status. Lingkar lengan atas (LiLA) telah digunakan sebagai indikator proksi terhadap risiko kekurangan energi kronis (KEK) untuk ibu hamil di Indonesia karena tidak terdapat data berat badan prahamil pada sebagian besar ibu hamil. Selama ini, ambang batas LiLA yang digunakan adalah 23,5 cm. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji validitas LiLA terhadap indeks massa tubuh (IMT) yang merupakan indikator yang lebih baik untuk mengetahui status gizi wanita dewasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan data Riset Kesehatan Dasar tahun 2007 pada perempuan dewasa usia 20 – 45 tahun di seluruh Indonesia. Hasil penelitian ini ialah ambang batas LiLA yang paling optimal untuk mendeteksi risiko KEK di Indonesia berada pada titik 24,95 cm (Se = 85%; Sp = 75%). Terdapat perbedaan ambang batas antarprovinsi tetapi tidak lebih dari 2 cm, terendah di Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur (23,95 cm) dan tertinggi di Provinsi Sulawesi Utara dan Gorontalo (25,95 cm). LiLA mempunyai korelasi yang kuat (r = 0,67; nilai p < 0,000) dengan IMT. Direkomendasikan untuk menggunakan ambang batas LiLA 24,95 cm untuk mendeteksi risiko KEK wanita usia 20 – 45 tahun, sementara23,5 cm untuk outcome kehamilan, yaitu morbiditas dan mortalitas bayi.Kata kunci: Lingkar lengan atas, indeks massa tubuh, kekurangan energi kronisAbstractMid-upper arm circumference has been used in Indonesia as an proxy indicator of chronic energy malnutrition risk for pregnant women because there isn’t any data of prepregnancy weight in most of pregnant women. The boundary used was 23,5 cm. The objective of the study is to validate the currentboundary related to body mass index (BMI) indicator, which is believed as a better indicator in identifying women nutritional status. The study is using Riset Kesehatan Dasar 2007 data on Indonesian adult women aged 20 – 45 years old. The study found the boundary is 24,95 cm for detecting chronic energy malnutrition risk among adult women (Se = 85%; Sp = 75%). There are differences among provinces but not more than 2 cm, the lowest is in Nusa Tenggara Timur (23,95 cm) and the highest is in North Sulawesi and Gorontalo (25,95 cm). Mid upper arm circumference has a strong relationto BMI (r = 0,67; p value < 0,000). It is recommended to use mid-upper arm circumference boundary 24,95 cm to detect chronic energy malnutrition on 20 – 45 years old women and 23,5 cm to pregnancy outcome, baby morbidity, and mortality.Key words: Mid-upper arm circumference, body mass index, chronic energy deficiency

AbstractObjective:To assess the strength of correlation and agreement between mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and BMI, and determine suitable MUAC cut-offs, to detect wasting and severe wasting among non-pregnant adult women in India.Design:Cross-sectional studies were conducted in five high-burden pockets of four Indian states.Setting:Prevalence of malnutrition among women and children is very high in these pockets and the government plans to implement community-based pilot projects to address malnutrition in these areas.Participants:Anthropometric measurements were carried out on 1716 women with children &lt;5 years of age. However, analyses were conducted on 1538 non-pregnant adult women.Results:The results showed a strong correlation between MUAC and BMI in the non-pregnant women, with correlation coefficient of 0·860 (95 % CI 0·831, 0·883; P &lt; 0·001). Cohen’s κ of 0·812 and 0·884 also showed good agreement between MUAC and BMI in identifying maternal wasting and severe wasting, respectively. The univariate regression model between MUAC and BMI explained 0·734 or 73 % of the variation in BMI. The MUAC cut-offs for wasting (BMI &lt; 18·5 kg/m2) and severe wasting (BMI &lt; 16·0 kg/m2) were calculated as 232 and 214·5 mm, respectively.Conclusions:MUAC is a strong predictor of maternal BMI among non-pregnant women with children &lt;5 years in high-burden pockets of four Indian states. In a resource-constrained setting where BMI may not be feasible, the MUAC cut-offs could reliably be used to screen wasting and severe wasting in non-pregnant women for providing appropriate care.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the performance of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) to identify thinness in the late adolescence period (aged 15–19 years) in Ethiopia. Design: We conducted a school-based cross-sectional study. The receiver operating characteristics curve was used to examine the validity of MUAC compared with BMI Z-score to identify adolescents with thinness (BMI Z-score <−2 sd). Settings: Fifteen high schools (grade 9–12) located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Participants: A total of 851 adolescent (456 males and 395 females) were included in the study. Results: The prevalence of thinness and severe thinness among high-school adolescents in Addis Ababa was 9·5 % (95 % CI 7·7, 11·7 %). The overall AUC for MUAC against BMI Z-score <−2 SD was 0·91 (95 % CI 0·88, 0·93). The optimal MUAC cut-offs to identify thinness were 23·3 cm for males and 22·6 cm for females. These cut-off points give high sensitivity and specificity for both males (a sensitivity of 87·9 % and a specificity of 75·9 %) and females (a sensitivity of 100 % and a specificity 88·2 %). Conclusions: MUAC has a comparable level of accuracy with BMI Z-score to identify thinness in adolescents aged 15–19 years. Hence, MUAC could be used as an alternative tool for surveillance and screening of thinness among adolescents aged 15–19 years. The optimum cut-off proposed by this study may incorrectly include a large number of adolescents when used in a relatively well-nourished population. In this situation, it would be necessary to choose a cut-off with greater positive predictive value.

OBJECTIVE: In order to determine the relationship between some maternal anthropometric indicators and birth weight, crown-heel length and newborn's head circumference, 92 pregnant women were followed through at the prenatal service of hospital in S. Paulo, Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The following variables were established for the mother: weight, height, mid-upper arm circumference, pre-pregnancy weight, gestational weight gain and Quetelet's index. For the newborn the following variables were recorded: birth weight, crown-heel length, head circumference and gestational age by Dubowitz's method. RESULTS: Significant associations were noted between gestational age and newborn variables. In addition, maternal mid-arm circumference (MUAC) and pre-pregnancy weight were found to be positively correlated to birth weight (r=0.399; r=0.378, respectively). The multivariate linear regression shows that gestational age, mother's arm circumference and pre-pregnancy weight continue to be significant predictors of birth weight. On the other hand, only gestational age and mother's age was associated with crown-heel length. Similarly MUAC was significantly associated with crown-heel length (r= 0.306; P=0.0030). CONCLUSION: Maternal mid-upper arm circumference is a potential indicator of maternal nutritional status. It could be used in association with other anthropometric measurements, instead of pre-pregnancy weight, as an alternative indicator to assess women at risk of poor pregnancy outcome.

Low birth weight is one of the determinants of infant mortality, morbidity, and disability, which can even have an impact on the future. Several studies have suggested that the condition of low birth weight (LBW) infants is influenced by the lack of maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy. Moreover, the prevalence of malnutrition in Indonesia is still high. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the relationship of maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy as a predictor of LBW infants. Using a cross-sectional study design, this study involved 62 pregnant patients aged 20–35 years who had antenatal visits and a term delivery at Puskesmas Kecamatan Cakung. The measurements of body mass index (BMI) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in early pregnancy are used to determine the maternal nutritional status. Pregnant women with BMI <18.5 or MUAC <23.5 cm are considered to have less nutritional status. Meanwhile, LBW infants are defined as babies with birth weight <2500 grams. This study proves that the risk of birth of LBW infants is increased in pregnant women with BMI <18.5 (underweight) (OR 5.37) and less MUAC (OR 20.4).
