Abstract Background One of the easiest and effective ways of predicting under nutrition is to use the Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) and the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). The dietary diversity score is a qualitative measure of food consumption reflecting an individual’s access to different food items and therefore is a proxy indicator of the nutritional status. The aim of the study was to assess whether the DDS and MUAC can be used to assess the nutritional status of pregnant women attending antenatal. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted at Chilenje level I Hospital in a township located in Lusaka city, Lusaka province. The study employed quantitative methods to collect and analyse data on the dietary patterns and if this can be used to assess the nutritional status of individuals 24 hours preceding the survey. Health facilities were selected using random sampling method and systematic sampling method was used to select a sample of 299 pregnant women. An interview schedule was used to collect data. Logistic regression was used to establish associations between DDS and MUAC. Results In this study, 44% of the women were in the lowest dietary diversity category, which indicates inadequate nutrient intake, 31% in the medium category and 24% in the high intake. Maternal weight was associated with a 0.08 cm increase in MUAC (95% CI; 0.74 – 0.93) and this was statistically significant. Marital status and age (95% CI; 0.83 – 0.93) were significantly associated with an increase in MUAC in the univariate analysis but when adjusted for other confounders this was not significant (95% CI; 0.81 – 1.00). Consumption of organ meat was associated with a 0.21cm increase in MUAC (95% CI; 0.04 - 0.97). Conclusion The study results indicated that 44% of the women had inadequate nutrient intake, indicating that the dietary diversity score can be used to predict malnutrition in pregnant women. The mid upper was negatively correlated with the 24hour dietary diversity score implying that we might not rely on this measurement to assess the nutritional status. Introduction. Chronic energy deficieny (CED) is a condition of a body characterized by low body weight and low energy stores, possibly limited physical capacity due to deprivation of food over a long period time. Ministry of Health ( Kemenkes) showed that in 2015, 305 out of 100.000 death of pregnant women is realated to malnutriotion and CED. Objective. The aim of this study is to determine the overview of pregnant women nutritional status based on mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in Sundari Medan General Hospital. Method. The study was an observational descriptive study with a cross sectional design. The samples of this study consists of pregnant women from Sundari Medan Genaral Hospital, who had fulilled the inclusion and esclusion criteria by total sampling. Results.. Among 60 samples, the prevalance of Non-CED woman (85%) was found higher than the mild malnutrition (15%). Conclusion. Prevalance of CED pregnant women was found higher in risky age, middle educated and high income family.

Low birth weight is one of the determinants of infant mortality, morbidity, and disability, which can even have an impact on the future. Several studies have suggested that the condition of low birth weight (LBW) infants is influenced by the lack of maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy. Moreover, the prevalence of malnutrition in Indonesia is still high. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the relationship of maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy as a predictor of LBW infants. Using a cross-sectional study design, this study involved 62 pregnant patients aged 20–35 years who had antenatal visits and a term delivery at Puskesmas Kecamatan Cakung. The measurements of body mass index (BMI) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in early pregnancy are used to determine the maternal nutritional status. Pregnant women with BMI <18.5 or MUAC <23.5 cm are considered to have less nutritional status. Meanwhile, LBW infants are defined as babies with birth weight <2500 grams. This study proves that the risk of birth of LBW infants is increased in pregnant women with BMI <18.5 (underweight) (OR 5.37) and less MUAC (OR 20.4).

: Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) is considered as a good indicator of maternal nutritional status in pregnant women. Very few studies have been done to establish a relationship between MUAC and birth weight of newborn. This study was carried out to analyze the relationship between MUAC and birth weight of newborn in a tertiary health care facility.This cross sectional study was conducted in 240term pregnant women. MUAC was measured to the nearest millimeters using a non-stretchable tape at the midpoint between acromian process and olecranon process. Newborn baby weight was measured within 24 hrs of birth. The association between MUAC and birth weight was established by linear regression analysis.The mean of MUAC among pregnant women delivering LBW was 21.68±2.27 cm which was significantly low (p&#60;0.001) compared to women delivering normal babies (23.47±2.56 cm). There wasa positive correlation(r=0.32;p&#60;0.05)between MUAC and birth weight of newborn.The cut off value of MUAC for the prediction of LBW in our study was found to be 22.59 cm with 62.77% sensitivity and 71.55% specificity.Among the various maternal factors for the prediction of LBW, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) can be correlated with birth weight outcome effectively.

Maternal Mortality is mostly caused by bleeding (32 %), hypertension during pregnancy (25 %). Infection (5 %), long parturition  5 %),  and chronic energy deficiency (27.66 %). The objective of this research was to find out of correlation Between Maternal  Anthropometry  (Body Weight, Mid Upper Arm Circumference, Fundal Height) And Reflex physiology Of Normal Newborn Babies In delivery room  of Regional Public Hospital Of Meuraxa Banda  Aceh. The research was conducted from September 4 to September 22, 2016. The descriptive  correlation design with cross sectional study approach was used in this research. There were thirty  research sample that were chosen by using accidental sampling method. The result of this research indicated that were was  no correlation between body Weight of pregnant woman with reflex physiology of their normal Newborn Babies In Delivery Room  Of Regional Public Hospital of Meuraxa Banda  Aceh (p Value 0.174). There was a correlation Between Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of pregnant women with reflex physiology of their normal Newborn Babies (p Value 0.020). There was also  a correlation between fundal height with reflex physiology of their normal Newborn Babies (p Value 0.000). Based on those result, it is suggest that the pregnant women should pay nurse attention to their health by doing regular check -ups during  pregnancy in order to prevent any complication. It is also suggested that the health worker keep enhancing the medical service, such us the measurement of body weight, MUAC and fundal height. Keywords: Anthropometry, reflex physiology, normal newborn babies

Background: Under nutrition is the major public health problem in our country. There are numerous anthropometric methods, one of which is mid upper arm circumference (MUAC). MUAC cut-off classify the nutritional status of the children aged between 6-60 months. However, there is no specific cut-off for MUAC to identify the undernourished infants aged between 1-6 months. With the above background study was planned with the following objectives. Objectives of this study were to classify the nutritional status of 1-6 months aged infants using WLZ classification and to derive a cut off value for Mid upper arm circumference, to define under nutrition/wasting among 1-6 months aged infantsMethods: The cross-sectional study was carried out among 706 infants aged between 1-6 months. Nutritional status was assessed using WLZ. Various MUAC was tested against WLZ of <-2, in order to identify the cut-off below which, the infant will be considered undernourished.Results: Mean age of the participants was 96±55 days. Mean weight, length and mid upper arm circumference was 4.75±1.02 kg, 58.51±4.47 cm and 12.15±3.01cm respectively. MUAC cut-off <13.5 cm has yielded highest youden index, accuracy and sensitivity of 0.36, 0.79,99% respectively. The total area under ROC curve is 0.707 [95% CI: 0.66, 0.74; p<0.0001], having a good diagnostic accuracy and it is statistically significant.Conclusions: A MUAC cut-off value below 13.5 cm, among 1-6 months aged infants will be considered to be undernourished.

Abstract Background Adolescence is a critical time of development and nutritional status in adolescence influences both current and future adult health outcomes. However, data on adolescent nutritional status is limited in low-resource settings. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) has the potential to offer a simple, low-resource alternative or supplement to body mass index (BMI) in assessing nutrition in adolescent populations. Methods This is secondary data analysis, from a cross-sectional pilot study, which analyses anthropometric data from a sample of young adolescents attending their last year of primary school in Pwani Region and Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania (n = 154; 92 girls & 62 boys; mean age 13.2 years). Results The majority of adolescents (75%) were of normal nutritional status defined by BMI. Significantly more males were stunted than females, while significantly more females were overweight than males. Among those identified as outside the normal nutrition ranges, there was inconsistency between MUAC and BMI cut-offs. Bivariate analyses indicate that BMI and MUAC show a positive correlation for both female and male participants, and the relationship between BMI and MUAC was more strongly correlated among adolescent females. Conclusions Further studies are needed with more nutritionally and demographically diverse populations to better understand the nutritional status of adolescents and the practical contribution of MUAC cut-offs to measure adolescent nutrition.

Background: Wasting, a form of malnutrition is a major public health burden in developing countries including India. Since, food and diet diversity have direct impact on nutritional status of children. The aim of the study was to assess the dietary consumption pattern and malnutrition based on mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) of Lodha tribal children of Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts of West Bengal, India.Methods: A total of 1043 Lodha preschool children (1-5 years) was selected for the present study. MUAC of the children was made and recorded by standard method. A questionnaire for 24-hour dietary recall method was applied to collect dietary information. Dietary diversity was calculated by standard techniques. All statistical analyses were performed by using Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software.Results: The mean±SD of MUAC was 129.7±11.3 mm. The results showed that the mean MUAC increased steadily with the advancement of age in both genders. Prevalence of wasting based on MUAC in age-sex combined among Lodha children was 28.9%, of which 24.9% and 4.0% found to be moderate and severe acute malnutrition. The dietary intake of children was insufficient than recommended dietary allowance (RDA). The dietary diversity score (DDS) and Dietary serving score (DSS) of the children were very low. Pearson correlation analysis showed Mean adequacy ratio (MAR) had significant correlation with DDS (r=0.26, p<0.001), DSS (r=0.81, p<0.001), calorie intake (r=0.52, p<0.001) and protein intake (r=0.38, p<0.001).Conclusions: The dietary consumption of Lodha children was inadequate. This effort should be given to improve their nutritional status by nutrition education and nutrient sensitive farming including kitchen garden.
