Language is one of the important aspects for early childhood development. Language functions as a means of communication as well as being an important means for the lives of children. It is dangerous to be a means for children to be able to interact with each other, share their experiences, and be able to improve intellectually, namely in order to develop their language knowledge and skills. For early childhood it is a period of development that must be fostered and developed so that they can make full use of their language skills. If the guidance, direction, and handling are not appropriate or even not obtained by the child causes language development that is not in accordance with what is expected by parents at home or by educators at school. The methods that can be done to stimulate and optimize children's language intelligence, including the method of question and answer, storytelling, tourist visits and play play (dramatic play). The role playing method consists of playing the role of macro and micro by going through the stages of playing an artificial role, playing with the object, pretending to be related to actions and circumstances, perseverance and oral communication. Based on data analysis and discussion, information can be obtained that the method of playing drama (play dramatically) / role playing is carried out in several stages, namely identifying figures, determining story settings, interpreting stories and values contained, reflection and observation. The application of this technique is expected to provide optimization of early childhood language intelligence.

The traditional English teaching method has gradually been replaced by new teaching methods in English class. Situational Language Teaching Method is a way to activate the teaching of language knowledge through the design of authentic and concrete situation. A survey is carried out in Inner Mongolia University for Nationalites. It investigates the practical application of Situational Language Teaching Method among Mongolian English majors in this university. Through the analysis of the questionnaire results, the paper reveals the obstacles existing in the application of the method, namely: passive participation due to improper text parsing; weakening role of teachers; and ineffective transfer among language, image and meaning. At the same time, it puts forward appropriate strategies to solve the problems during the application of SLT to Mongolian English majors.

How to preserve oral communication in patients with tracheostomy is the primary focus of this paper. We review the approaches applicable to patients who breathe independently and to patients who depend on coupling to a ventilator. For the former, valving the tracheostomy cannula to provide inspiration through the cannula and expiration through the larynx is often practical and effective. For the latter, deflating the cuff, which is often inflated to seal the cannula in the trachea, may preserve oral communication without sacrificing alveolar ventilation. Our experiences with these patient populations are reviewed together with an exposition of valving and cuff deflation. Although the literature includes references to these practices, it also suggests that their recognition is restricted. Our own experiences justify confidence in the effectiveness of these compensations for the communication impairments which result from tracheostomy with or without ventilator dependency.

Completion of a first-semester chemistry (Chem I) course lays the foundation for understanding second-semester chemistry (Chem II) topics. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of basic arithmetic skills on students’ Chem II success in understanding mathematics-grounded concepts (e.g., solutions and aqueous reactions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, solubility and equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry). Previous studies suggest a strong correlation between arithmetic preparation and performance in general chemistry courses, though few have focused on the second-semester course. In this investigation, researchers from six higher-education institutions in Texas, USA of different sizes and with student bodies of different diversities have collaborated to determine whether the Math-Up Skills Test (MUST) is able to reliably identify at-risk students from a population of n = 1599 at the beginning of a Chem II course.

The powerful nature of novice teachers’ experiences in their first years of teaching has been well documented. However, the variance in novices’ initial immersion in the school environment is largely dependent on perceived personal and professional support as well as the environmental inducements that lend to novice teachers’ success in the classroom. For the purposes of this study, 72 participating novices, who were participants in an alternative certification program, drew representations of their current teaching environments. Of the 72 initial participants’ pictures, 58 were used in this content analysis. The interrater analysis involving multiple documentation of codes between and among researches, revealed five themes from the novices’ pictures: (a) concerns about students, (b) overwhelmed and struggling, (c) relationships with others, (d) concerns about education quality and excessive accountability, and (e) issues with administration. Implications are provided.

Compensatory strategies play an important role in second language (L2) processing because of limited language knowledge and ensuing anxiety and could help assure understanding and void communication breakdown. Previous studies about compensatory strategies largely adopt laboratory settings and neglect the strategies in authentic oral communication. Accordingly, the present study investigated compensatory strategies used by Chinese university students in online videoconferences with their US peers during a five-week virtual exchange project. We interviewed 27 Chinese students twice, once after the first-week videoconference, the other after the last-week videoconference. The English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in this study could adopt compensatory strategies of different levels. Their strategy use, however, was not flexible enough as several types of strategies were repeatedly used, while other types were rarely implemented. The virtual exchange could help the EFL learners employ compensatory strategies more often, of higher levels, and with increased immediacy. The results can help to establish more targeted English teaching and learning.
