Abstract Background Childhood obesity has become a public health problem. Worldwide, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children has increased dramatically especially in developing countries. The present study aimed to assess whether six months intervention program with parents' implication in primary schools is able to decrease morning snack consumption among children aged 6 to 12 years. Methods We carried out a quasi experimental study with two groups of schoolchildren in the region of Sousse (Tunisia) from 2015 to 2016. One primary school in each group was selected. In each school, we randomly selected a sample size of schoolchildren and their parents. The intervention was based on healthy eating habits promotion. Results The consumption of morning snacks the day before data collection, reported by children, decreased significantly in post-intervention in both intervention and control groups. The decrease of consumption of morning snacks was significantly higher in intervention group (p = 0.009). According to parents, the proportion of children who had the habit of eating morning snack decreased significantly from pre to post-intervention in intervention group (p < 0.001). Conclusions A healthy environment should be created through effective school policies to prevent obesity. Key messages The consumption of morning snacks reported by children, decreased significantly in post-intervention. A healthy environment should be created through effective school policies to prevent obesity.

One of my goals, as a geometry teacher, is for my students to develop a deep and flexible understanding of the written definition of a geometric object and the corresponding prototypical diagram. Providing students with opportunities to explore analogous problems is an ideal way to help foster this understanding. Two ways to do this is either to change the surface from a plane to a sphere or change the metric from Pythagorean distance to taxicab distance (where distance is defined as the sum of the horizontal and vertical components between two points). Using a different surface or metric can have dramatic effects on the appearance of geometric objects. For example, in spherical geometry, triangles that are impossible in plane geometry (such as triangles with three right or three obtuse angles) are now possible. In taxicab geometry, a circle now looks like a Euclidean square that has been rotated 45 degrees.

Preventing smoking among adolescents is critical. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Smoking Prevention Education Program among nonsmoking adolescents. A quasi-experimental study design was used. Data were collected from Year 5 students ( n = 140) from four government primary schools in the Kuantan and Pahang districts of Malaysia. The participating schools were randomly assigned into the intervention and control groups. Questionnaires and exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) levels were used to collect data at the baseline and at 3 months postintervention. At 3 months postintervention, the percentage of nonsmokers remained 100% in the intervention group, while 2.9% of the participants in the control group reported to have smoked in past 7 days. Comparatively, the mean scores of attitudes, subjective norms, and nonsmoking intentions of the intervention group improved significantly. The intervention was effective in preventing smoking initiations among Malaysian adolescents; however, further evaluation of this intervention is needed among varied populations.

AbstractIn this paper two new approaches are developed to calculate the astronomical vessel position (AVP). Basically, determining the AVP is originated from the spherical equal altitude circles (EACs) concept; therefore, based on the Sumner line's idea, which implies the trial-and-error procedure in assumption, the AVP is determined by using the two proposed approaches. One consists in taking the great circle of spherical geometry to replace the EAC to fix the AVP and the other implements the straight line of the plane geometry to replace the EAC to yield the AVP. To ensure the real AVP, both approaches choose the iteration scheme running in the assumed latitude interval to determine the final AVP. Several benchmark examples are demonstrated to show that the proposed approaches are more accurate and universal as compared with those conventional approaches used in the maritime education or practical operations.

A theoretical and experimental study has been made for a film repture in hydrodynamic lubrication. A model is proposed on boundary conditions at the film rupture point. It contains a pressure correction term as a parameter, which simplifies that derived by Coyne and Elrod, and the so-called separation boundary condition. Some experiments have been conducted for a flow in a cylinder-plane geometry. It is found that numerical results using the present model agree reasonably well with the present and previous experimental data.
