High, neutral, and low statements of success expectancy were paired with positive and negative success feedback statements in a 2 x 3 factorial design involving 43 low-achieving high school students. The communication was applied to reading comprehension lessons in 10 daily class sessions with two dependent variables, comprehension (test scores) and effort expended as measured by the rate of lessons completed on 33 reading exercises. Incongruent communication combinations (e.g., high success expectancy-negative feedback) produced higher comprehension than congruent combinations (e.g., high success-positive feedback). There were no reliable differences in effort expended. The results are amenable to both an arousal theory and an attribution theory interpretation with some evidence that the attribution interpretation explains the findings more adequately.

Abstract One of the important measures of quality of education is the performance of students in academic settings. Nowadays, abundant data is stored in educational institutions about students which can help to discover insight on how students are learning and to improve their performance ahead of time using data mining techniques. In this paper, we developed a student performance prediction model that predicts the performance of high school students for the next semester for five courses. We modeled our prediction system as a multi-label classification task and used support vector machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), K-nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) as base-classifiers to train our model. We further improved the performance of the prediction model using a state-of-the-art partitioning scheme to divide the label space into smaller spaces and used Label Powerset (LP) transformation method to transform each labelset into a multi-class classification task. The proposed model achieved better performance in terms of different evaluation metrics when compared to other multi-label learning tasks such as binary relevance and classifier chains.

Abstract The use of mindfulness as a tool to improve mental health has received increased attention. Schools provide ideal environments for short-term prevention and skill development for mental health. Further, teachers can promote and reinforce students’ daily use of mindfulness. This study explored the effects of a short-term group mindfulness-based intervention on the mental health of adolescents who have experienced trauma. A total of 49 high school students received a mindfulness-based intervention session followed by homework and teacher reinforcement. The results suggest that a short-term group intervention for mindfulness can potentially improve mindfulness attention awareness and reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents. As there was no control group, additional research examining the effectiveness of the intervention is essential.

Very few studies have examined moral reasoning in students identified as having behavioral disorders and enrolled in a special education setting. Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the impact of alternative education programs designed for behaviorally disordered youth on moral reasoning development. This research examined the moral reasoning of behaviorally disordered adolescents enrolled in alternative and traditional high school settings. The results indicate that behaviorally disordered high school students enrolled in either an alternative or traditional school setting are significantly lower in moral reasoning compared to their non-behaviorally disordered peers. The moral reasoning of the behaviorally disordered students enrolled in an alternative setting is similar to that of like students enrolled in a traditional school setting. The correlation between time (months) spent in the alternative setting and moral reasoning is positive, but not significant.

Background Stigma and limited mental health literacy impede adolescents getting the help they need for depressive symptoms. A serious game coupled with a classroom session led by lived experience workers (LEWs) might help to overcome these barriers. The school-based Strong Teens and Resilient Minds (STORM) preventive program employed this strategy and offered a serious game, Moving Stories. The current study was carried out to assess inhibiting and promoting factors for scaling up Moving Stories once its effectiveness has been ascertained. Methods Moving Stories was offered in three steps: (1) introductory classroom session, (2) students playing the game for five days, (3) debriefing classroom session led by lived experience worker. Data was collected on the number of participating students, costs of offering Moving Stories, and was further based on the notes of the debriefing sessions to check if mental health first aid (MHFA) strategies were addressed. Results Moving Stories was offered in seven high-schools. Coverage was moderate with 982 participating students out of 1880 (52%). Most participating students (83%) played the Moving Stories app three out of the five days. Qualitative data showed that the MHFAs were discussed in all debriefing sessions. Students showed great interest in lived experience workers’ stories and shared their own experiences with depression. Conclusions Bringing Moving Stories to scale in the high-school setting appears feasible, but will remain logistically somewhat challenging. Future implementation and scale-up of Moving Stories could benefit from improved selection and training of LEWs that played such an important role in grabbing the full attention of students and were able to launch frank discussions about depressive disorder and stigma in classrooms. Trial registration The study is registered in the Dutch Trial Register: Trial NL6444 (NTR6622: https://www.trialregister.nl/trial/6444).

Abstract Social-emotional learning (SEL) is key to student success. Teachers can effectively implement SEL programs to a variety of school populations, with demonstrated improvements in emotional, social, and academic outcomes. Research also suggests that SEL for students on the autism spectrum can result in improved outcomes. Although social-emotional difficulties are core characteristics of autism, there is a dearth of research identifying the SEL needs for high school students on the autism spectrum and how to meet these needs. The aim of this preliminary qualitative study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of SEL needs in a high school setting with adolescents on the autism spectrum. A focus group was conducted with 8 experienced teachers from mainstream and special needs settings. The thematic analysis identified 3 themes: (a) SEL needs of students on the autism spectrum, (b) teaching SEL in high school settings, and (c) gaps in SEL. The study also revealed suggestions for how a SEL program could be developed so that it best meets the needs of the teachers who would be implementing it. Outcomes from this study provide important insights into SEL in adolescents on the autism spectrum in special education and have practical implications for intervention models.

The College Entrance Examination Board and the Educational Testing Service claim that the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) improves colleges' predictions of their applicants' success. James Crouse uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of high school students to calculate the actual improvement in freshman grade point averages, college completion, and total years of schooling resulting from colleges' use of the SAT. He then compares those predictions with predictions based on applicants' high school rank. Crouse argues that the College Board and the Educational Testing Service have yet to demonstrate that the high costs of the SAT are justified by its limited ability to predict student performance.

Abstract The disappointing employment outcomes of students with intellectual disability (ID) can often be exacerbated by the social-related challenges they experience. Within high school transition programs, interventions targeting employment-related social behaviors and inclusive practices should emphasize individualization, self-regulation, and generalization. We used a multiple-probe-across-participants, single-case experimental design to examine the effects of video-based instruction on the individualized employment-related social behaviors (ERSB) of 5 high school students with ID with severe levels of impairment. For all participants, the intervention increased ERSB, sustained task engagement in the school setting, and maintained over time. Students and educators considered the intervention beneficial and enjoyable. We offer implications for supporting social skills development within secondary schools to prepare students for future inclusive employment opportunities.

The COVID-19 health emergency has brought a new and unforeseen situation in education in Mexico and around the world. This report shows the results of an online survey applied to high school (CETYS abbreviated in Spanish) and bachelor degree (TecNM abbreviated in Spanish) students at the Mérida and Tuxtla Gutiérrez campus. Out of 846 students, 501 answered the survey. Most of them live in municipal seat, some of them in rural communities 28.5 are high school students and 71.5% are bachelor degree students. 48.1% of students responded that they would not like to continue receiving classes online and 44.1% that in this modality their learning was the same as face -to- face lessons. They face organizational, technological, pedagogical and, to a lesser extent, information issues. They mainly use the WhatsApp application as well, as Microsoft Teams for synchronous work and virtual interviews, they consider it suitable for their virtual sessions. The responses to the coverage of the educational program were similar, the fifth part reached between 90 and 100%; The students showed irregularities during the setting of this educational modality and the main problem was the failure of the Internet connection, and the least was the lack of sensitivity of the teacher. Objectives: Need to obtain information on the opinion of students regarding their academic development during the school period that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, that would allow knowing the problems they are facing and proposing alternatives to support students Methodology:A survey was applied to undergraduate and high school students to find out their opinion regarding their problems in school development, the data were analyzed using predetermined scales and the SPSS program to determine the possible correlation between the mentioned variables. Contribution: Problems related to student performance were verified, most have their own computer and have internet service, they still do not adapt to taking virtual classes and express disapproval to continue with this form of learning, factors to be taken into consideration in the immediate future.
