Process Data in NAEP: Past, Present, and Future

This article reviews how National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has come to collect and analyze data about cognitive and behavioral processes (process data) in the transition to digital assessment technologies over the past two decades. An ordered five-level structure is proposed for describing the uses of process data. The levels in this hierarchy range from ignoring the processes (i.e., counting only the outcomes), to incorporating process data as auxiliary or essential in addition to the outcome, to modeling the process as the outcome itself, either holistically in a rubric score or in a measurement model that accounts for sequential dependencies. Historical examples of these different uses are described as well as recent results using nontraditional analytical approaches. In the final section, speculative future directions incorporating state-of-the-art technologies and analysis methods are described with an eye toward hard-to-measure constructs such as higher order problem-solving and collaboration.

Marketing educators have long espoused the importance of critical thinking as a means of developing students’ higher-order problem-solving skills. In this article, we utilize an historical approach to investigate how educators have defined, operationalized, and empirically evaluated the critical thinking construct. To accomplish this, we review the critical thinking literature from three prominent marketing education journals and the leading management education journal. In doing so, we summarize extant critical thinking research across varied pedagogical topics, review empirical findings, and present a conceptual framework for motivating future research.

This paper is devoted to the study of the existence and uniqueness of solutions for th order differential equations with nonlocal integral boundary conditions. Our results are based on a variety of fixed point theorems. Some illustrative examples are discussed. We also discuss the Caputo type fractional analogue of the higher-order problem of ordinary differential equations.

This study examines ethics-related learning outcomes that emerged from an experience-based project in a personal selling and sales management course. Using qualitative research methods, we classified students’ experiences according to domains of ethical issues associated with personal selling and according to conceptualizations of learning identified in the education literature. Patterns we observed in our data suggest that the experience-based project encouraged learners to employ higher-order thinking about business ethics. Higher order problem-solving about ethical issues helps ensure that lessons students learn about ethical decision making carry forward to their professional careers. Based on our findings, we recommend ways instructors can formulate ethics-related learning objectives, develop learning assessments that measure ethics-related learning outcomes, and design teaching and learning activities that help ensure students learn ethical concepts in a way that will carry forward to their careers.

Software quality measurement is closely connected with process and product. With measurement and analysis on software process data, improvement and control on software can be achieved. Effective process performance model plays key role in understanding and controlling. Introduction of GQM model into software measurement process can achieve controllability and testability of software process. GQM uses organization target as measurement index to achieve measurement of software process quantitative. The core idea of CMM/CMMI is to build fact-based management and CMM/CMMI software process management is built on the basis of software measurement. Combining with CMM/CMMI measurement idea, GQM model was expanded to achieve a kind of improved process performance model.

AbstractThe Academic Development Study of Australian Twins was established in 2012 with the purpose of investigating the relative influence of genes and environments in literacy and numeracy capabilities across two primary and two secondary school grades in Australia. It is the first longitudinal twin project of its kind in Australia and comprises a sample of 2762 twin pairs, 40 triplet sets and 1485 nontwin siblings. Measures include standardized literacy and numeracy test data collected at Grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 as part of the National Assessment Program: Literacy and Numeracy. A range of demographic and behavioral data was also collected, some at multiple longitudinal time points. This article outlines the background and rationale for the study and provides an overview for the research design, sample and measures collected. Findings emerging from the project and future directions are discussed.

Abstract In recent years, the global buckling assessment of offshore pipelines in High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) condition become increasingly challenging since more complex pipeline system arrangement e.g. pipe(s) or cable(s) is strapped onto a larger pipeline, are rapidly utilized in many areas. Yet, the detailed guideline to assess the buckle of bundles remains unclear, therefore this study will focus to investigate on a methodical and reproducible approach to analyze in-service buckling behavior of bundled offshore pipeline system. The global buckling behavior of bundled offshore pipeline system in this study is investigated using commercial Finite Element (FE) software. Two carbon steel pipelines with different diameter are bundled and the buckling behavior is studied under the influence of buckle triggers. In the actual condition, the rogue buckle trigger is generated from OOS (out of straightness) or imperfection e.g. due to laying tolerance. Varying dimension parameter such as diameter ratio between the main pipeline and strapped pipeline are considered to understand the impact of this parameter on the buckle behavior. The study begins with a comparison of the results using numerical and analytical approaches on a straight pipeline in an unbuckled condition for validation purposes. The design parameters including wall thickness, process data, and pipe-soil interaction data, are varied since it influences the buckle behavior. In addition, some design parameter such as material properties and pipeline length will be adopted from a typical offshore pipeline project and the values are fixed so the exercise can focus on the most governing parameters. Following this, two numerical modelling methods, the equivalent properties method and the connector method, are presented in this study to simulate bundled systems. With a good agreement between the analytical and numerical approach, some buckle trigger is introduced on the numerical model of the bundled pipeline so the system is able to buckle and the behavior can be evaluated further. The strain level, lateral displacement, axial feed-in and pipe integrity shall be reported in the post-buckle conditions for both main pipe and strapped pipe as per current code and standard requirement. With more reliable results of buckling assessment for bundled pipeline system, it gives technical confidence and a major saving in both Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operational Expenditure (OPEX). Industry has put serious effort through various Joint Industry Projects (JIP) to develop the global buckling assessment guideline in order to ensure long term integrity operation. Although the JIP guideline is predominantly for single pipeline system, similar assessment is demanded also for bundled pipeline system which described in this study. Key findings of the assessment are presented along with an overview of the design process and the typical mitigation techniques to be considered for similar subsea pipeline projects.

Psychological evaluation included tests of brain-behavior functioning and academic level for 110 young adults (16 to 39 yr. of age), each a moderate to heavy user of mental health services. The composite patient manifested borderline, diffuse brain dysfunction with deficiencies in language, visuospatial, motor, concentration, and higher-order problem-solving skills, together with below normal performance on tests of intelligence, reading comprehension, arithmetic calculation, and spelling. Standard mental health services appear inadequate for habilitation or rehabilitation of many such people. The findings suggest that one reason for these patients' lack of response to conventional mental health treatments is that clinicians fail to identify patients' fundamental deficiencies and to incorporate this knowledge in planning treatments and evaluating progress. Suggestions for further studies are offered.
