Language learners should learn reading skill as one of four language skills. It is to make learners' ability on foreign language becomes more comprehensive. The purpose of reading is to improve the understanding about the content of the text and it is the central purpose of language learners. Text readability level is also influenced by the readers’ motivation, ability, and interest.  Thats whay in selecting reading texts, the teacher should concern to text readability level and the student language level. Students' level must be related with text readability level, so that it is inappropriate to give junior high school students difficult text such as a difficult scientific text. Therefore this study conclude that the is an effect of textbook readability on students reading comprehension.

The article aimed to investigate whether there was a correlation among the language skills and components. The researcher took two language skills and one language component to be part of the research: listening, reading comprehension skills, and grammar mastery. In the research, there were several questions regarding the three variables of listening, reading, and grammar which were focusing on the correlation among the variables. The independent variable was grammar mastery (X) while the independent variables were listening comprehension (Y1) and reading comprehension (Y2). The data collection was taken from the population of Grade X Budi Luhur Senior High School students, Tangerang, with 40 students served as a sample. The research was conducted using the quantitative method with the help of statistical calculation of Pearson Product Moment Correlation to prove whether there was a significant correlation among the three variables. As a result, it is proven that there is no significant correlation between grammar mastery and both listening and reading skills while there is a quite strong correlation between listening and reading skills of the students.

This study aimed to determine the factors affecting writing skill quality and the level of their contribution to help language teachers to formulate more effective strategies using CAT to enhance writing skill. The correlating factors discussed in this research were students’ reading comprehension skill, vocabulary mastery, and attitude toward language.  The study applied quantitative approach with simple and multiple correlation and regression techniques. The samples of the study were 100 students taken using stratified random sampling technique from a population of 2000 junior high school students in Surakarta City. The data were collected using multiple choice test for students’ reading comprehension skills and vocabulary mastery, writing assignments, and questionnaires for their attitudes toward the Indonesian language. The findings showed that there are positive correlations between the independent variables, either individually or simultaneously, with writing skill. The individual contribution levels is 44.75% of reading comprehension skill, 27.70% of vocabulary mastery, and 28.5% of attitude toward language. As for the simultaneous correlation of the three determining factors make up to 45.16%. contribution level to writing skill quality. Thus it can be concluded that reading comprehension has the most contribution to writing skill compared to vocabulary mastery and attitude toward language. The identified levels of contribution can be taken into consideration in formulating teaching strategies and materials to enhance writing skill quality.

This qualitative study aims to examine the types and realization of the use of Code Switching communication strategies used by junior high school students when communicating in English as a foreign language. The research subjects were 30 students of SMP N IV Surakarta. The research objects were the types and realization of the use of code switching communication strategies used by students when communicating in English. Data were collected through the elicitation technique in which the participants were given the task to describe a cartoon; their speech was recorded and used as the data source. The data were analyzed qualitatively by inductive techniques using Dornyei and Myers-Scotton analysis frameworks. Research findings were interpreted by using relevant theory. The results showed that the learners used three types of code switching, namely: tag code switching, intra sentential code switching, and inter-sentential code switching. And there were three factors that contributed to the use of code switching, namely mastery of bilingual or bilingual, limited mastery of English, and as a compensation strategy. It can be concluded that the use of code switching by English learners as a foreign language is a natural and unavoidable. Because code switching is one of the communication strategies to compensate for the limited mastery of the target language.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ways of using concept mapping strategies for enhancing Junior High School students’ reading comprehension in reading report text. Many students face difficulties in reading, like problems in their reading comprehension, cannot interpret what they read, and make the connection between what they read and what they have already known because they are unable to accurately understand written materials. Concept mapping can solve these problems by mapping their ideas, comprehending any scientific text especially for report text, analyze reading text easily, and make of conclusion from the text in a structural way. So, the concept mapping strategy is suitable for enhancing students’ reading comprehension and solve the problem.

This study concerned on improving students’ achievement in readaing comprehension narrative text through preview, question, read, reflect, recite, and review (PQ4R)  technique. This study was limited on the second year junior high school students’ achievement in reading comprehension after teaching by applying preview, question, read, reflect, recite, and review ( PQ4R).The objective of this study was to find out the improvement of students, achievement on reading comprehension through PQ4R technique. The subject of the study was VIII-1 students of SMP N 4 Pagaran. The numbers of the students were 35. The techniques for data analysis were quantitative dataand qualitative data.In analyzing the quantitative data, the mean of the students’ score for the test I cycle I was  53.62, the mean score of test II in cycle II was 73.28, the mean of test III in cycle II was 75.65. Reading is widely accepted as one of the most important second/foreign language skills as it offers language learners the opportunity to acquire a variety of lexical items, grammatical structures, and additional schematic knowledge. It is quite difficult to motivate language learners to read more in the classroom. Many school teachers are unaware of specific ways and strategies to motivate language learners to read. The study aimed to investigate Georgian 10th grade students’ motivation to learn language and their attitudes towards classroom reading. The sample of the study consisted of fifty students. The results of the study indicated that students were more motivated integratively than instrumentally. Classroom reading was less interesting for them because they were less interested in the topics included in their text books. It can be concluded that there is a need for more varied and interesting reading topics to increase students’ motivation towards classroom reading. The goal of the paper is to show to teachers that students, on the one hand, realize the importance of classroom (i.e., intensive) reading, but, on the other hand, are bored with the way it is normally taught. It is teachers’ task to find out the students’ needs and motivation and to take measures to increase the motivation.

This study integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine the roles that mental translation plays in reading classical Chinese and English as a foreign language among Taiwanese high school students. Gadamer’s theory of hermeneutic experience and the Vygotskian social-cultural theory provide the theoretical frameworks for this study. The quantitative data consist of reading comprehension tests and translation surveys, while the qualitative data are composed of think-aloud protocols and interviews with the participating students and their teachers. At least two prominent findings emerge from the data analyses: (1) mental translation appears to have positive and significant associations with reading comprehension across two languages; (2) ambivalent perceptions of and attitudes toward the employment of mental translation for reading classical literary Chinese and English are discerned. The findings support Gadamer’s contention that humans learn to translate as they are learning a language. The views and ideas expressed by the participating teachers and students uncover a sociocultural dimension of reading, as proposed by Vygotsky.
