This report presents information on the design and validity of the Batería Neuropsicológica Digital Infantil (BANEDI - in English Digital Developmental Neuropsychological Test Battery) based on data collected from a sample of 988 children/adolescents in Montevideo, Uruguay and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Building on recent contributions from cognitive neuropsychology, this instrument aims to assess the neuropsychological development of children and adolescents aged 4 to 15 years and attending Preschool to 3rd year of Secondary school in the region of Río de la Plata. BANEDI intends to be a clinically useful and scientifically rigorous tool to collect information on the following eight cognitive domains: memory, attention and executive functions, theory of mind, metalinguistic skills, oral language, visual-spatial skills, written language and mathematical skills. It consists of a total of 75 subtests and two questionnaires for parents and teachers.In this report we provide information on the results of item parameter analyses of the subtests included in the battery, as well as evidence on the content, criterion and developmental validity of BANEDI. To conclude, results reflect that BANEDI meets the criteria to ensure psychometric quality and can therefore be used to complete a valid estimation of the neuropsychological functioning of children/adolescents aged 4 to 15 years and attending Preschool to 3rd year of Secondary school.

Writing disabilities have many potential origins, including oral language deficits, motor coordination problems, and reading disabilities. Multiple potential sources of written language problems are described, along with the integrative aspects of the writing process that make it one of the most demanding academic tasks. Remedial interventions vary according to the identified cause of the problem based on the results of the psychoeducational evaluation. Remediation targeting the individual and modifications to classroom instruction may be required. Case studies illustrate three different underlying causes of writing problems. Key among these are motor and spatial skills, general language ability, and comorbid behavioral or reading disorders.

The problem and the aim of the study. Students at secondary school are facing problems in learning Mathematics for topic Geometry. The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of a learning strategy for 3-dimensional Geometry, using Visual Tools Screencast SketchUp Make, called ViToS-SUM. Research methods. ViToS-SUM consists of four components: level of van Hiele geometrical thinking, visual spatial skills, visual tools and video tutorial screencast SketchUp Make. A topic in form 3 mathematics, Plans and Elevations was chosen for this study. The whole process of design and development of ViToS-SUM adopted the five cyclic stages of ADDIE instructional design model. This article addresses the details of the final two stages specifically, implementation and evaluation prior to pilot test. Twelve students from a secondary school and three experts involved in this study. Quantitative approaches were used to collect data as well as to analyse the experts’ and students’ views on the appropriateness of ViToS-SUM. Results. The experts agreed that both visual spatial skills (mean = 5.00) and level of van Hiele geometrical thinking (mean = 4.61) should be embedded in ViToS-SUM. Moreover, the experts also agreed that the content of ViToS-SUM is suitable (mean = 4.51) with the mathematics content for topic Plans and Elevations. The pre and post test showed that there were significant differences in mean scores of visual spatial skills, before and after learning via ViToS-SUM (t=12.21; p<0.05). Furthermore, the pre and posttest also revealed that there is a significant difference in students’ level of van Hiele geometrical thinking before and after intervention (Z =-3.18; p < 0.05). Thus, ViToS-SUM had supported most of students in constructing concepts of Geometry. Meanwhile, the findings revealed that all experts agreed that ViToS-SUM served as pedagogical learning strategy for Geometry. Conclusion. This learning strategy should be integrated in the mathematics curricular for secondary schools to increase students’ performance in Geometry. Training is needed for teachers in order to deliver the concepts of Geometry effectively using this mode of teaching. More computer facilities should be equipped to schools in order to encourage teachers and students to utilize technology in teaching and learning.

Background. Considerable research documents an association between pro- and anti-inflammatory markers and Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the differential relation between these markers and neuropsychological functioning in AD and nondemented controls has received less attention. The current study sought to evaluate the relationship between peripheral markers of inflammation (both pro- and anti-inflammatory) and neuropsychological functioning through the Texas Alzheimer's Research and Care Consortium (TARCC) cohort.Methods. There were 320 participants (Probable ADn=124, Controlsn=196) in the TARCC Longitudinal Research Cohort available for analysis. Regression analyses were utilized to examine the relation between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers and neuropsychological functioning. Follow-up analyses were conducted separately by case versus control status.Results. Proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers were found to be associated with neuropsychological testing. Third tertile proinflammatory markers were negatively associated with measures of attention and language, and anti-inflammatory markers were positively associated with measures of immediate verbal memory and delayed verbal and visual memory.Conclusions. These findings support the link between peripheral inflammatory markers and neuropsychological functioning and suggest the utility of examining profiles of inflammatory markers in the future.

AbstractReduced IQ, learning difficulties and poor school performance have been reported in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) subjects. However, few studies include a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. Our aim was to study neuropsychological functioning in young adults born SGA at term. A comprehensive neuropsychological test battery was administered to 58 SGA subjects (birth weight <10th centile) born at term, and 81 term non-SGA controls (birth weight ≥10th centile). The SGA group obtained significantly (p< .01) lower scores on the attention, executive and memory domains compared to non-SGA controls and showed higher risk of obtaining scores below −1.5SDon the memory domain (odds ratio = 13.3, 95% confidence interval: 1.57, 112.47). At a subtest level, the SGA group obtained lower scores on most neuropsychological tests, with significant differences on 6 of 46 measures: the Trail Making Test 3 (letter sequencing), the Wechsler Memory Scale mental control and the auditory immediate memory scale, the Design Fluency, the Stroop 3 (inhibition) and the Visual Motor Integration (VMI) motor coordination subtest. Young adults born SGA score more poorly on neuropsychological tests compared with non-SGA controls. Differences were modest, with more significant differences in the memory domain. The aim of this book chapter is to clarify the meaning of the terms (“social distance” and “social link”) and to analyze the influences of the social distance reconfigurations on the behavior of the first towards the second. Based on interviews with secondary school teachers, this chapter aims to show how do the influences of social distance reconfigurations change or not their oral language practices.

This study aimed to describe (1) type adjectives in Minangkabau language in kenagarian Sungai Abang subdistrict Lubuk Alung district Padang Pariaman, and (2) the process of forming adjective in Minangkabau language in kenagarian Sungai Abang subdistric Lubuk Alung district Padang Pariaman. This type of research is qualitative research with descriptive method. The method of data collection was using the method of referring and recording technique. Analyzing the data was done in the form of activities as follows: (1) describes the recording data into written language, (2) identify the data in accordance with the format provided, (3) classify the data into the type and process of the formation of the adjective, and (4) do data deduction based on research result. The data of this research are sentence containing the adjectives expressed by the community in kenagarian Sungai Abang subdistrict Lubuk Alung district Padang Pariaman. The source of this research is Minangkabau language especially oral language of society in kenagarian Sungai Abang subdistrict Lubuk Alung district Padang Pariaman. Based on the results of the research obtained the following results, first adjectives in Minangkabau language in kenagarian Sungai Abang subdistrict Lubuk Alung district Padang Pariaman is as follows: (1) characteristic adjective (character or temperament), (2) color adjectives, (3) shape adjectives, (4) size adjectives, (5) sensory adjectives, (6) time adjectives, (7) distance adjectives, (8) speed adjectives, (9) power adjunctive adjectives, (10) adjectiva adjectives. Secondly, there are two adjunctive adjunctive processes in the Minangkabau language, which are basic adjectives and derivate adjectives that can be sorted on beraffixed adjectives, duplicated adjectives and compounded adjective adjectives. Keywords: Adjectives, Word-forming, Minangkabau Language

Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) are popular “club/party” drugs that first attracted attention in the UK in 2009 and remained legal until the 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act criminalized their distribution. Unlike “traditional” illicit drugs, very little is known about the influence of their analogs on neuropsychological functioning. We characterized the cognitive and emotional profile of NPS/polydrug users using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) and EMOTICOM test battery in adult male (aged 20–49 years) recreational users without psychiatric comorbidities (n = 27; “psychonauts”), service users attending a UK specialist “Club Drug” Clinic for problematic use (n = 20) and healthy control volunteers without significant drug-taking histories (n = 35). Tasks were selected to distinguish “hot” cognitive processes that are highly influenced by emotion from “cold” cognitive processes that are largely independent of emotional influence. Both user groups reported significantly higher sensation-seeking traits compared with non-users. Recreational NPS users demonstrated more risk-taking behavior compared with controls and treatment-seeking NPS users showed poorer learning, episodic memory and response inhibition compared with the other two groups. These effects persisted, when controlling for age, intelligence, alcohol and cannabis use severity, nicotine dependence, trait anxiety, depression, childhood adversity, impulsivity, and sensation seeking. Overall, recreational NPS users showed elevated “hot” (emotion-laden) cognition in the absence of “cold” (non-emotional) cognitive deficits, whereas “cold” cognitive dysfunction was pronounced in individuals seeking treatment for problematic NPS use. High trait impulsivity and poor self-control may confer additional risk to NPS/polydrug use severity and separate those seeking treatment from those using NPS recreationally.

A questionnaire was developed to assess adult recall for a range of transpersonal experiences throughout childhood and adolescence (mystical experience, out-of-body experience, lucid dreams, archetypal dreams, ESP), as well as nightmares and night terrors as indicators of more conflicted, negative states. In two exploratory studies this questionnaire was administered to subjects with high estimated levels of early transpersonal experiences and practising meditators, with respective undergraduate controls. A cognitive skills/precocity model of early transpersonal experience was contrasted with a vulnerability of self model by comparisons of these groups on questionnaire categories, imaginative absorption, neuroticism, and visual-spatial skills, with some support found for both models depending on experience type, age of estimated recall, and adult meditative practice.

BackgroundCurrent literature provides insufficient information on the degree of cognitive impairment during and after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), mostly due to the fact that applied tests lacked sensitivity and flexibility. Our goal was to evaluate cognitive functioning in adult depressed patients treated with bi-temporal ECT, using tests sensitive for detection of possible acute and medium-term memory changes.MethodThirty adult patients with major depressive disorder, treated with a course of bi-temporal ECT, underwent clinical and cognitive measurements three times: at baseline, immediately after a course of ECT, and 1 month later. For cognition assessment, we used learning and visual, spatial and figural memory tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB).ResultsBi-temporal ECT has proven to be an effective treatment. The linear mixed model, used to analyze changes in depression severity and patients’ cognitive performances over time and to assess dynamic correlations between aforementioned features, did not show any significant memory impairment as a potential acute or medium-term ECT effect. However, it yielded significant improvement on visual memory and learning at the follow-up, which positively correlated with the improvement of depression.ConclusionGood progress is being made in the search for ECT-related acute and medium-term cognitive side-effects by using the tests sensitive to detect memory dysfunction with parallel forms of the tasks (to counter practice effects on repeat testing). Our results on learning and memory in relation to ECT during treatment of depression did not bring forth any prolonged and significant bi-temporal ECT-related memory deficit.
