This research aims to show the masculinity crisis experienced by a male character (a husband) due to the shift role of breadwinner in marriage in the short story "Huruf Terakhir" by Benny Arnas. This research is essential because it can demonstrate the impact of the wife's involvement to work in the public domain towards the husband's condition. This research is qualitative research by utilizing the concept of gender. Data collection techniques are carried out through document tracing on a short story "Huruf Terakhir" by Benny Arnas as the corpus.  The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The results showed that shifting role of breadwinner can cause a man (a husband) to experience a crisis of masculinity such as loss of independence, confidence, courage, assertiveness, and emotional control. The shifting role as breadwinner is also shown to open the opportunities for repression in women. Therefore, the research on the short story "Huruf Terakhir" is expected to contribute to the study of gender-sensitive literature, especially since it is able to show masculinity traits associated with the role of breadwinner can complicate men’s position and  potentially hinder women's freedom.

Previous scholars in linguistics study have focused only on theory proposed by European linguists, one of them is Ferdinand De Saussure from Swiss. However, long before Saussure’s concept has been popularized, in the fourth century Arab world has already had concept of linguistics initiated by Abdul Qāhir al-Jurjāni. Embarked upon a study on language construction of Al-Qur'an, he extended the concept to general context including Arabic literature. This current study compared Al-Jurjāni and Saussure theoretical concepts by employing library research. The main sources were taken from Dalailul i'jaz authored by Al-Jurjāni and Course in Gerenal Linguistics written by Charles Bally and Albert Sechehay taken from their notes in Saussure’s college class. The findings reveal the sameness of linguistics concept between Saussure and Al- Jurjāni namely langue-parole vs Lughah-Kalam, Significant-Signifier vs lafal-makna, and Syntagmatic-Paradigmatic vs an-nadzm- al-Ikhtiār.

Issues regarding gender issues are closely related to women and how their roles are constructed in social life, which creates various stereotypes that lead to gender inequality problems. In the film La Source des Femmes, gender construction is shown through narrative and cinematographic aspects. This article focuses on women's resistance to gender construction that have taken shape in the lives of remote rural women in Morocco. The analysis in this article uses a film study by Boggs and Petrie (2012) and Actor Scheme by Greimas (1967). James C. Scott's concept of resistance and Mansour Fakih's gender inequality were also used to deepen the analysis. This research is a qualitative research with descriptive method. The data in the study are in the form of words, clauses, phrases, or sentences that indicate the form of women's resistance. The findings of the analysis show that the resistance shown by rural Moroccan women aims to fight the injustice of their roles and obligations as women and housewives who have been oppressed and have directly harmed them. Through this research, it is also seen that the resistance carried out by village women has an impact on their growing awareness of self-subjectivity and redefining their role as a woman.

Myriads of studies about gender stereotypes in educational materials have been carried out by global scholars in recent years. One of the focus is in the textbook seems to be crucial due to its prominent role as guidance to curriculum and teachers’ credence on the contents. A textbook actually has two important role as vehicle of knowledge transfer and of social practices paradigm construction. However, little studies have reported on the representation of female characters stereotypes in the context of elementary school language textbook. Following multimodality framework proposed by Van Leuween (2008), verbal and visual texts in two English language textbooks published by private companies in Indonesia were analysed in respect to gender stereotyped. The findings reveal the existence of stereotypes of female character on personality, hobby and interest, occupation, and social roles. The study suggests textbook makers (authors and publishers) and users (parents, teachers, and education stakeholders) to rise critical gender awareness.
