We examine whether individuals react to social comparisons involving their parent or child as they would to comparisons involving the self. Individuals reported high self-other overlap for mother and child, but not father (Pilot Study), suggesting that individuals may experience mother’s and child’s outcomes as their own. After recalling upward comparisons, high overlap children (undergraduate students; Study 1) protect their perceptions of their mother, but not father, and parents (with children 18 or younger; Studies 2-3), regardless of overlap, protect their perceptions of their child: They changed the meaning of threatening upward comparisons by rating domains as less important and attributing less responsibility to family members. Finally, we examined self-attributions to rule out the alternative explanation that individuals use these strategies to protect themselves because they feel personally responsible for family members’ outcomes. These studies suggest that individuals experience mother, but not father, comparisons as if they were directly involved but only if they are high in overlap. In contrast, parents experience child comparisons as if they were comparing themselves directly regardless of overlap.

The 20th century brought different periods in the history of Mongolia including theocracy, socialism and democracy. This article describes what renouncing the world (especially the home and the family), taking ordination, and taking monastic vows meant at the turn of the 20th century and a century later. Extracts from interviews reveal the life of pre-novices, illustrating their family backgrounds, connections with family members after ordination, and support from and towards the family. The master-disciple relationship which was of great significance in Vajrayāna tradition, is also described. As few written sources are available to study monks’ family ties, the research was based on interviews recorded with old monks who lived in monasteries in their childhood (prior to 1937), monks who were ordained in 1990, and pre-novices of the current Tantric monastic school of Gandantegčenlin Monastery. The interviews revealed similarities and differences in monastic life in given periods due to historical reasons. Though Buddhism could not attain its previous, absolutely dominant role in Mongolia after the democratic changes, nowadays tradition and innovation exist in parallel.

The study focused on Avoidant Addresses (AAs) in Japanese families and investigated the links between daily use of AAs in the family and family conflicts. The participants were 329 Japanese college students. They reported forms of address used daily among each of their family members. They also rated the frequency of conflicts among each of their family members. The results show that parent-child relationships with AAs experienced significantly higher frequency of parent-child conflicts than those without. The families with AAs also experienced a higher frequency of family conflicts than those without. Use of AAs might be unacceptable in Japanese families and reflect parent-child and family conflicts.

How do entrepreneurs fill institutional voids that prevail in emerging markets? By incorporating insights from both the political and family embeddedness perspectives, we argue that both political ties and family ties can compensate for gaps in the institutional infrastructure of emerging markets. Specifically, we propose and examine the partial substitutability of family ties for political ties as a means of filling institutional voids. Our empirical work based on Chinese private enterprises strongly supports this argument. We also find that the effective utilization of family ties is contingent on both family members’ motivation (willingness to use resources for the firm) and entrepreneurs’ mobilization (authority in the family to mobilize family members). This study bridges the literature on political ties and family ties to understand their respective costs and benefits and therefore advances our understanding of entrepreneurs’ networking strategies in emerging markets.

ABSTRACT Objective: to know the perception of undergraduate students in speech-language pathology about speech therapies in the area of deafness. Methods: qualitative research, with data collection accomplished with a questionnaire and a focus group. The sample was accomplished by 14 students enrolled at a speech pathology course. Results: the results were discussed by means of categories: knowledge, expectations, needs, bond and therapeutic practices. The students presented feelings of anguish in dealing with family expectations, especially regarding to the speech work and the fear for intervening caused by inexperience and necessities of the family. It was also evidenced that the students hoped that family members believed in the potential of the child. There is a need for more practice in Brazilian Sign Language. The support of the family members is crucial for a good therapeutical accompaniment, because when they trust on the student, the kind of therapy, and on the adopted approach, he or she cooperates with the evolution of the therapeutical process, facilitating the bond. When the family believes in the effectiveness of the therapy and the possibility of good results, the child does not miss sessions. Moreover, the bond created with the family and the patient helps the student to see the real difficulties of the child and what should be done to be improved. It was pointed out that the bilingual approach cooperates for the self-recognition of deaf culture and identity. Conclusion: on students' perception, the experience gained along the stage provided theoretical-practical knowledge to work with the family, recognizing the importance of this to the therapeutic success and to deal with the expectations of both parties.

AbstractThis article uses hundreds of letters written by the families of patients committed to Victorian Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum to provide the first sustained examination of the effects of asylum committal on patients’ individual family members. It shows that, despite what historians have previously suggested, the effect on families was not solely, or even necessarily primarily, economic; it had significant emotional effects, and affected family members’ sense of self and relationships outside the asylum. It also shows that family ties and affective relationships mattered a great deal to working-class Victorians. Some found new ways to give meaning to their relationship with, and the life of, their incarcerated relative, despite the costs this entailed. By taking a new approach – engaging with the history of the family, shifting focus from patients to their individual family members, and considering factors including age, class, gender, change over time, and life stage – this article demonstrates the breadth and depth of the effects of asylum committal, and in doing so provides new and significant insights into the history of the Victorian asylum. It also enriches the history of the family by providing an insight into working-class quotidian lives, bonds, and emotions.

The family is the smallest social group, consisting of father, mother and child. The family is the first social group where individuals are to learn many important and fundamental things through parenting and fostering parents and other family members. Parents have an important role for the child's soul growth and in laying the foundations of the child's personality, because parents are educators, guides, and protectors for their children. Therefore, parental guidance for children must be biblical. One of them is to overcome Permissive Parenting problems that often occur in the household. Thus, Proverbs 22:15 is considered very appropriate to be the basis for answering the errors of parenting that have been common in Christian families. In this paper, the author will discuss the meaning of the Educational Stick in Parenting based on Proverbs 22:15.
