Analytical solutions converging rapidly at large and small values of times have been obtained for two mathematical models which describe the concentration distribution of a non reactive pollutant from a point source against the flow in a horizontal cross-section of a finite saturated shallow aquifer possessing uniform horizontal groundwater flow. Zero concentration or the conditions in which the flux across the extreme boundaries are proportional to the respective flow components are applied. The effects of flow and dispersion on concentration distribution are also discussed.

Abstract Using modern multiloop calculation methods, we derive the analytical expressions for the total cross sections of the processes e−γ →$$ {e}^{-}X\overline{X} $$ e − X X ¯ with X = μ, γ or e at arbitrary energies. For the first two processes our results are expressed via classical polylogarithms. The cross section of e−γ → e−e−e+ is represented as a one-fold integral of complete elliptic integral K and logarithms. Using our results, we calculate the threshold and high-energy asymptotics and compare them with available results.

The cross-section area of straight fin is often considered to be equal in the thermal analyses of straight fin, but sometimes it is unequalin actual situation. Taking a straight fin with two unequal cross-sectional areas as an example,an analytical method of heat conduction for unequal section straight fin is presented. The analytical expressions of temperature field and heat dissipating capacity about the fin,which has a smaller cross-section area near the fin base and a larger one, is obtained respectively. The calculation results of the unequal cross-section are fully consistent with the equal area one, so the method is proved right. The results show that the larger the cross section areanear the base,the better is the heat transfer, and the temperature at the base with larger cross-section area is lower than that with smaller cross-section area when the amount of heat is fixed.

Complete analytical expressions for the first and second derivatives of the gravitational potential in arbitrary directions due to a homogeneous polyhedral body composed of polygonal facets are developed, by applying the divergence theorem definitively. Not only finite but also infinite rectangular prisms then are treated. The gravity anomalies due to a uniform polygon are similarly described in two dimensions. The magnetic potential due to a uniformly magnetized body is directly derived from the first derivative of the gravitational potential in a given direction. The rule for translating the second derivative of the gravitational potential into the magnetic field component is also described. The necessary procedures for practical computer programming are discussed in detail, in order to avoid singularities and to save computing time.

AbstractThe thickness of the Athabaska Glacier has been obtained along eight transverse profiles by an investigation of gravity anomalies. Three-dimensional computations with a low-speed digital computer were made in this study to acquire more precise results than previously obtained. The thickness of the glacier varies front 326 m. on a line below the lower ice fall to 49 m. near the terminus. The accuracy of the results is discussed and compared with independent data from bore holes and a seismic program. The cross-section of the glacier valley was found to approximate a parabola on several lines. From a knowledge of the thickness. shape and surface slope of the glacier, the average shear stress exerted by the bed on the ice was found to be 1.0 bar.

As a new kind of pavement material, the Open Graded Friction Course (called OGFC) has many advantages, and so is rapidly popularized in China recently. However, the performance of OGFC decreases with the utilization of road, such as the decrease in permeability, durability and so on. In the present study, the influence of the shape of coarse aggregate, which is the most important material in OGFC, on the performance of OGFC was investigated in laboratory. The shape of coarse aggregate is indicated by the bulk density and total 4 kinds of aggregates with different bulk density were produced artificially and tested in this study. When the shape of coarse aggregate changed, the wear resistance and dynamic stability of OGFC also changed lightly. The bulk density of aggregate has no serious influence on the void content, but has obvious influence on the permeability of OGFC. The shape of continuous void in horizontal cross-section becomes rounder when the aggregate with large bulk density is used. The rounder continuous void is benefit for the flowing of water, so the permeability of OGFC is improved.
