An Alternative to Traditional Assessment: The Debate Showcase

Recent debates indicate that there is a lack of focus on ontological transformation within university study due to an over-reliance on a tick-box approach to skill acquisition (Wilson et.al 2013, p. 1223). This paper discusses a recent initiative undertaken at a tertiary pathways institution focused on the utilisation of an alternative productive process to assess student learning. This alternative assessment approach was designed to better engage a specific student cohort that differs significantly from ‘conventional student bodies’ both socio-economically and educationally. It has been noted that many students within the cohort do not have the ‘assumed cultural capital’ (Delvin 2011) that facilitates success in a traditional tertiary environment. This paper focuses on how a debate assessment was modified using the concept of spiral curriculum (Bruner cited in Takaya 2008) to better align with the specific needs of the cohort and course outcomes. The concept was used as a scaffolding approach linked to real-life experience to help students make better sense of the key unit content. This paper argues that the showcase was generally successful, by shifting focus from a previously adversarial model to a reflective and ultimately transformative learning experience.

SUMMARY This instructional case, based on a real-life experience, introduces students/professionals to an ethical dilemma faced by a CPA who serves as both an auditor and a tax preparer for related parties. The CPA becomes aware of a large amount of gambling activity undertaken by an individual income tax client who is employed as the executive director of the local branch of a national charitable organization. The local branch also happens to be an audit client of the CPA. Through the case, students/professionals gain an understanding of and appreciation for a realistic ethical dilemma faced by a CPA who also prepares personal income tax returns for related parties. To help the CPA resolve the issues in this case, students/professionals must understand and apply relevant professional standards, including the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct, AU-C Section 240 “Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit,” and IRS Circular 230 “Regulations Governing Practice Before the Internal Revenue Service.” A survey questionnaire administered to students who completed the case during an upper-level accounting course suggests that students found the case to be an enjoyable and valuable learning experience that helped them to recognize personal and professional ethical issues facing auditors and tax professionals, as well as to access and apply professional standards to such ethical issues.

This study aims to determine the marketing strategy Herbalife in Manado City. The method of determining the area of research done in purposive, using the case study method which is a description of a real-life experience, which is used to make points, raise issues or otherwise enhance understanding and learning experience of the participants. Where, Nutrition Green House as a location or point of research. Data analysis method used is descriptive analysis, SWOT analysis, and business strategy theory. The results showed that the strategies that have been applied are maintained and add to the marketing strategy of "investment strategy", which prioritizes the development of this strategy over the larger business. Home Nutrition Green brings their positive impact on the communities that exist around the city of Manado. Its positive impact, among other things, the public can find out how to live healthy by consuming Herbalife products with the benefits contained in any product without considering the price of Herbalife products.

Contextual learning, enabling the learner to be active, evolves according to its potential. In the learning pro- cess, the main thing  is to link all these aspects. To relate it can be done in various ways, such as material that is studied directly related to the factual  conditions associated with real life experience. CTL approach is the relationship of matter or topic  with real life. So in the contextual learning is how to have  the learning experience owned by students always associated with actual problems that  occur  in the  environment. Thus learning in civic education based on Pancasila values  through contextual learning emphasizes the introduction, love and  application of Pancasila values  to learners. Learners are led to adaptation to the values of Pancasila so that it becomes a prophetic man, a human that is useful both for life itself and society, nation and states.

This paper aims to understand how T-learning helps communities achieve better sustainability outcomes. On the basis of an intensive literature review and field research conducted in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, the paper proposes a substantial linkage between T-learning and sustainability. It first outlines the environmental changes in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, which appear to serve as “disorienting dilemmas” that force local people to learn and gradually shift their farming practices to align with a climate-resilient development. The paper relies on the outcomes of household surveys, field observations and focus group discussions to explore the impacts of T-learning on building adaptive capacity and sustainability transition in two community-based projects in Can Tho City and Ca Mau province in the Mekong Delta. Our findings reveal that T-learning enables experts and practitioners to introduce new ideas and accordingly mobilize local people to make changes without inciting doubt, dismay or concern. In an ideal T-learning approach, small-scale farmers learn from being under the supervision of experts in “field-based schools” that offer real-life experience and encourage learners to shift their livelihoods to eco-friendly agricultural practices. The paper sheds new light on how a critical approach to education for sustainable development through T-learning can be, under specific conditions, one strategy. It concludes that T-learning should be acknowledged as a potentially important part of the broader approach to climate-resilient development in vulnerable grassroots communities.

This study proposes the use of board games for teaching and learning shipping management in higher education and examines its effects on cognition. It employs a game-based learning approach to engage students with real-life experience in shipping management so that students are able to experiment with the causes and effects of their decisions based on the theory they have learned. An instance of a shipping management game was developed from the board game framework which stands on the discreet event simulation of a realistic shipping process and activity. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted to measure the effectiveness of the board game in giving students some understanding of shipping operations. Data were gathered from a sample of 67 undergraduate students, using a non-equivalent control group design. Students who received the game-based method performed better in the post-test assessment. A performance comparison indicated that there was a difference in students’ achievement for the tramp services and liner services contents. The use of board game aims to expose students to the best learning experience when they immerse themselves in solving problems and making decisions in the game. Moreover, the board game provides a transparent learning space, which encourages students to make knowledge discovery at their own pace in a non-threatening environment.
