Osteomyelitis of the mandible is a rare condition and it could be a serious complication of untreated odontogenic infection. Classically, patient with osteomyelitis of the mandible would experience pain and swelling over the affected side of the face. CT is usually indicated when there is extension of the infection into the adjacent soft tissue and fascial spaces which could be the presenting clinical symptom. Hereby, we present a case of mandibular osteomyelitis in an 11 year old girl who presented with pain and swelling in left lower jaw followed by extraction of tooth, diagnosed on CT followed by surgical management. Myiasis is an infection of live mammalian tissue by the larval forms of dipteran flies, usually infects domestic and wild animal but human may be affected sometimes. Although adult cases have been reported, neonatal myiasis is a rare condition. Umbilical myiasis is very rare in newborns with few reported cases in the literature. In this article we are reporting an eight day old female neonate from urban slum area in West Bengal (India) presented with umbilical myiasis and omphalitis. She was infected with Chrysomya spp. larvae, was clinically well. Journal of College of Medical Sciences-Nepal, 2012, Vol-8, No-4, 42-45 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jcmsn.v8i4.8700

Abstract We report the case of a 12 days old baby boy who presented with swelling and bluish discoloration on his left hip at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in November 2018. Ultrasound (USS) was useful in making the diagnosis of a neonatal psoas abscess. He was treated with extraperitoneal drainage and with systemic antibiotics. The clinical presentation and diagnosis, treatment of this rare condition and brief literature review is given in this case report. Key Words: Abscess, Iliopsoas, Neonate, Staphylococcus aureus, Extraperitoneal Drainage. Continuous....

AbstractWe present a case report of a single lesion of cysticercosis cellulosae, a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), presenting as a soft tissue swelling of the lower lip. We stress the importance of knowledge about oral manifestations of parasitic infections.

Esthetically pleasing face with harmonious soft tissue profile, stable occlusion and pleasant smile are important goals of orthodontic treatment. This case report along with the treatment results is of Class I bimaxillary protrusion malocclusion treated with fixed orthodontic appliance after extraction of all first premolars. The orthodontic treatment involving extraction of premolars brought about good esthetic changes in the face and dentition resulting into improvement in the soft tissue profile, occlusion and attainment of a more harmonious smile and dentofacial esthetics.

Fournier’s gangrene(FG) is a rare, necrotising fasciitis of the genitals and perineum with occasional cranial extension to the abdominal wall caused by a mixture of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. The complications of this synergistic infection are multiple organ failure and death. Due to the aggressive nature of this condition, early diagnosis is crucial. Treatment involves extensive soft tissue debridement and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Despite appropriate therapy, mortality is high. We report a case of a gentleman who presented with gangrenous and necrotic penile, scrotal and perineal areas. Patient was successfully managed by extensive soft tissue debridement, broad spectrum antibiotics and skin grafting. This case report presents a case of wild bear attack in the central region of Nepal causing extensive maxillofacial injuries and its management. The patient suffered bilateral comminuted midface fractures with extensive soft tissue lacerations. Management included multidisciplinary approach including maxillofacial surgeons, ENT surgeons and cosmetic surgeon to realign the injured soft tissue and bone to pre injury state. Outcome was satisfactory given the initial presentation of patient.JCMS Nepal. 2015; 11(2):31-33

Necrotising fasciitis of the periorbital region is a rare condition where there is destruction of the periorbital soft tissue with potential of rapid spread causing significant morbidity and mortality. It is generally seen in immuno suppressed individuals following trivial trauma. Here we present a case of periorbital necrotising fasciitis in a young immonocompetent lady with emphasis on early identification and aggressive treatment to prevent loss of vision and mortality.

Introduction. Pheochromocytoma of the urinary bladder is a rare tumor and presents less than 0.06% of all urinary bladder tumors. Case report. We presented a 49-year-old female patient with a history of daily paroxysmal hypertension accompanied with flushing of the face and upper chest, palpitations and excessive sweating prior to micturition. Ultrasonography reported a 3 cm bladder wall tumor. The 131I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (131I-MIBG) scan showed a pathological isotope accumulation in the projection of the bladder. The patient underwent a partial cystectomy. One year following the operation the patient was normotensive and without recurrence. Conclusion. The most efficient treatment option for bladder pheochromocytoma is surgical resection. The most important fact in the diagnostics is suspicion on this rare condition.

Pachydermoperiostosis is a rare condition representing a primary form of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. It presents in different stages. Patients often overlook early symptoms, because they are benign. The most common manifestations are clubbing of the fingers and toes, skin thickening with characteristic folds on the face and head and widening of joints accompanied by radiological changes. Surgical treatment is not often needed, and, consequently, there are no strict guidelines on surgical management, which is mainly based on case report analysis. This paper presents a case of surgical management of pachydermoperiostosis.

Abstract Objectives Simultaneous, radiation-free registration of the teeth and the upper and lower jaw positions in relation to the extraoral soft tissue could improve treatment planning and documentation. The purpose of this study is to describe a workflow to solve this form of registration and surface acquisition with a mobile device. Methods Facial scans of ten healthy participants were taken using a blue-light LED 3D scanner (Artec® Space Spider; Artec® Group; Luxembourg). An impression of the maxillary dentoalveolar arch was taken simultaneously to the 3D photo using a modified impression tray with two different extraoral registration geometries (sphere vs. cross). Following, an impression of the mandibular dentoalveolar arch was taken once. Both impressions were scanned with the 3D scanner. All resulting standard tesselation language (.stl) files of the geometries were compared to the original, virtual .stl files and the root mean square errors (RMSE) were calculated for each surface (Artec Studio 13 Professional × 64; Artec® Group; Luxembourg) to determine which geometry serves as a better reference for intra-extraoral registration. Results The RMSE between the original geometries and the scanned counterfeits were statistically lower for spherical geometries (p < 0.008). Once scanned and aligned, both geometries enabled an alignment of the intra- and extraoral scan. However, the spherical geometries showed virtually better results without significance (p = 0.70). Conclusions The presented study provides a radiation-free solution for simultaneous dentoalveolar correlations in relation to the extraoral soft tissue. Spherical geometries achieved more precise and easier intra-extraoral alignments using the applied mobile 3D scanner and workflow.
