This teaching case addresses the strategic choices of social entrepreneurs and the issues they face in search of funding. In the heart of Europe’s capital, Brussels, two aspiring entrepreneurs founded Le Champignon de Bruxelles to produce exotic mushrooms. Being true social entrepreneurs, they use a recycled substrate—brewery dredge—to do so, as such, minimizing the distance the mushrooms travel from farm to plate. After the typical “entrepreneur-in-the-basement” start, they are now at a turning point. They established themselves as a serious player in the market, producing over 6000 kg of mushrooms every month. This journey, however, did not come without its challenges. Along the way, they struggled to reconcile their idealistic mindset with the realities of the economic system and adopted a more pragmatic approach in response. At the moment, they are at a decisive moment in the company’s development and are contemplating whether their current business model should be diversified and internationalized.

The LMI Made-in-Italy (MiI) Jewelry business model which brings together the innovative concept of luxury Digital District (DD) and an e-commerce innovative platform is presented. The DD represents the shift from a traditional jewelry Industrial District of networked Micro-Enterprises (MEs), namely artisans, tied to the physical dimension of a territory to a social and intangible digital environment in the virtual space which leverages a co-petitive crowdsourcing e-commerce platform. The innovative LMI platform enables young Italian artisans throughout Italy to feature an end-to-end global export business without intermediaries. Export wouldn't be viable to MEs by means of their small organizational structure, lack of digital culture and technologies. LMI copes with this issue, taking over MEs marketing, sales and logistics processes by earning a percentage on sales. An original complex approach to the analysis of the LMI value proposition issues is performed via methodologies integrating traditional methods with participated Design Thinking techniques.

ZusammenfassungDas deutsche und das amerikanische Hochschulwesen unterscheiden sich in historischer, sozialer und wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht grundlegend voneinander. Dennoch lohnt sich angesichts der offenkundigen Erfolge des amerikanischen Wissenschaftssystems eine vergleichende Betrachtung über Merkmale amerikanischer Hochschulen, die – mutatis mutandis – auch für deutsche Hochschulen von Nutzen und Interesse sein könnten. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt eine solche Betrachtung für zwei hochschulpolitische Kernbereiche an: Entscheidungsprozesse und -strukturen und die Finanzierung von Hochschulen. In beiden Bereichen zeigt sich, dass – hochschulpolitische Bereitschaft vorausgesetzt – die Leistungs- und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit deutscher Hochschulen von der klug angepassten Übernahme amerikanischer Erfahrungen und Entwicklungen durchaus profitieren könnten. Dies gilt insbesondere im Hinblick auf das Verhältnis zwischen institutioneller und individueller Autonomie, die Zuständigkeiten und die Legitimation von Hochschulleitungen, die Professionalisierung der Hochschulverwaltung, den Stellenwert von Hochschulen in der Allokation öffentlicher wie privater Ressourcen und das Finanzmanagement von Hochschulen.

<p class="p1">Mi propósito en este trabajo es reconsiderar una de las lecturasmás relevantes y provocativas que se han hecho sobre John Dewey en el mundo de habla hispana. En la primera parte reconstruyo las circunstancias que rodearon la difusión, interpretación y traducción de las obras de Dewey en el México de mediados de los años 1940, y en concreto las razones que llevaron a que la visión sociológica que José Medina Echavarría quiso dar de Dewey fuera finalmente desplazada por la filosófica de José Gaos. En la segunda parte analizo la traducción y lectura que Gaos hizo de Experience and Nature de Dewey, teniendo muy presente sus comparaciones con Sein und Zeit de Heidegger (una obra que tradujo en la misma época). Finalmente, propongo algunas críticas a la visión que Gaos transmite de Dewey como un pensador carente de un tipo de “soberbia diabólica” propia de la verdadera gran filosofía.</p>

With stringent environmental regulations and a new drive for sustainable manufacturing, there is an unprecedented opportunity to incorporate novel manufacturing techniques. Recent political and pandemic events have shown the vulnerability to supply chains, highlighting the need for localised manufacturing capabilities to better respond flexibly to national demand. In this paper, we have used the spinning mesh disc reactor (SMDR) as a case study to demonstrate the path forward for manufacturing in the post-Covid world. The SMDR uses centrifugal force to allow the spread of thin film across the spinning disc which has a cloth with immobilised catalyst. The modularity of the design combined with the flexibility to perform a range of chemical reactions in a single equipment is an opportunity towards sustainable manufacturing. A global approach to market research allowed us to identify sectors within the chemical industry interested in novel reactor designs. The drivers for implementing change were identified as low capital cost, flexible operation and consistent product quality. Barriers include cost of change (regulatory and capital costs), limited technical awareness, safety concerns and lack of motivation towards change. Finally, applying the key features of a Sustainable Business Model (SBM) to SMDR, we show the strengths and opportunities for SMDR to align with an SBM allowing for a low-cost, sustainable and regenerative system of chemical manufacturing.

AbstractThis paper proposes a semantic framework for Business Model evaluation and its application to a real case study in the context of smart energy and sustainable mobility. It presents an ontology based representation of an original business model and examples of inferential rules for knowledge extraction and automatic population of the ontology. The real case study belongs to the GreenCharge European Project, that in these last years is proposing some original business models to promote sustainable e-mobility plans. An original OWL Ontology contains all relevant Business Model concepts referring to GreenCharge’s domain, including a semantic description of TestCards, survey results and inferential rules.

AbstractThis study details the non-destructive chemical analysis of composite silver objects (ewers, situlas, amphora and casket) from one of the most significant late Roman finds, the Seuso Treasure. The Seuso Treasure consists of fourteen large silver vessels that were made in the fourth–early fifth centuries AD and used for dining during festive banquets and for washing and beautification. The measurements were systematically performed along a pre-designed grid at several points using handheld X-ray fluorescence analysis. The results demonstrate that all the objects were made from high-quality silver (above 90 wt% Ag), with the exception of the base of the Geometric Ewer B. Copper was added intentionally to improve the mechanical properties of soft silver. The gold and lead content of the objects shows constant values (less than 1 wt% Au and Pb). The chemical composition as well as the Bi/Pb ratio suggests that the parts of the composite objects were manufactured from different silver ingots. The ewers were constructed in two ways: (i) the base and the body were made separately, or (ii) the ewer was raised from a single silver sheet. The composite objects were assembled using three methods: (i) mechanical attachment; (ii) low-temperature, lead-tin soft solders; or (iii) high-temperature, copper-silver hard solders. Additionally, two types of gilding were revealed by the XRF analysis, one with remnants of mercury, i.e. fire-gilding, and another type without remnants of mercury, presumably diffusion bonding.

Odour concentration measurements in a chosen industrial source were made in this study using the method of dynamic olfactometry. The two different scenarios considered the variation of the odour emission rate as input for the dispersion model were compared for the period 2017 (before installation of the equipment for gas treatment) and 2018 (after implementation of purifying technologies). In this paper the odour impact range was determined by applying model calculations conducted in the Polish reference dispersion model – OPERAT FB software for the grid size 2 x 2 km. The conducted research shows a significant improvement in the odour impact range of chosen industrial source in year 2018 compared to 2017.
