Mathematics is a discipline that can improve thinking skills. However, in reality, the mathematics thinking skills of elementary school students are still low. This is because the mathematics learning used is not optimal and still uses conventional learning. In the process of mathematics learning, there is an integration of character values with mathematics material. Character building through mathematics learning has not been done relatively. The current mathematical concept can be related to cultural activities called ethnomathematics. Through ethnomathematics, mathematics learning becomes more realistic. The purpose of this research is to build students’ character and improve student’s mathematic learning achievement through developing student worksheets with a mathematical approach based on ethnomathematics. The methods of the research were research and development by using steps including preliminary study, design, development, and dissemination. The result of the research is student's worksheets fulfill valid, practical, and effective criteria. The result of the validity of teaching media shows that the average number is 96 % with very good criteria. The effectiveness test shows that there is a distinction of student’s achievement before and after the treatment and the student’s achievement on average is increased. Based on the analysis of student's answers on student worksheets, four characters are built through the learning process with a realistic mathematic approach based on ethnomathematics, such as creativity, independence, curiosity, and nationality. Keywords: character building, realistic mathematics learning, ethnomathematics.

This article explores the skills and difficulties in critical thinking of junior Indonesian high school students in mathematics learning. Fifty students of grade IX who were purposive randomly selected from state junior secondary schools in Yogyakarta City were involved as the research subjects. The data were obtained from the test of mathematical critical thinking on the material of geometry. The test consisted of four items that describe each aspect of critical thinking skills, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. The analysis was done by showing the steps of the students ‘answers. The result indicated that the average of the aspects of mathematical critical thinking of students were on the high criteria with students’ greatest difficulties being in the analysis standard. Meanwhile, the average student success in the interpretation standard was 82%, the standard of the analysis was 46.25%, the evaluation standard was 78.25%, and the inference standard was 77%. Furthermore, from the results of the sample students’ exploration answers, it is expected that future teaching should not only focus on fluency in calculation but also on training the students in how to explain the solution steps of the problem solving process as this is important part in critical thinking.

The need for developing students' higher order thinking skills is the main indicator in the application of HOTS-based questions in high school mathematics learning. The results of the implementation have not shown satisfactory results. The high level thinking ability of students in Indonesia in Mathematics is still very low. Therefore, a HOTS-based diagnostic test is needed which is able to detect the mathematical misconceptions of high school students as the aim of this study. Based on the research objectives, the method of this study is a qualitative method with research design using the Plomp model research design. The subjects of this study were several students and teachers at a school in Cirebon Regency. The results showed that four HOTS questions could be developed based on three aspects, namely, arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. The problem was developed to detect three forms of misconception, namely, theoretical, classification, and correlational misconceptions. The four questions that have been developed were assessed through the readability test of students and teachers, and CVR and CVI tests were carried out on eight mathematics teachers with valid results. Based on these results it can be concluded that the HOTS questions developed can be implemented for students to detect forms of mathematical misconceptions of high school students.
