This article reveals the problem of staffi ng in the modern realities of the market. It should be just “circles on the water” ... It must be that we clearly agree with the facts of reality, or we need to deal with the problem at the very beginning, namely with the advent of training personnel. Can we say with confi dence that in 10 years both directions will be as relevant as they are now, and young potential personnel will go in this direction? The study of reproducible personnel in diff erent economic conditions, the proof that during the period of a planned economy, the solution of problems should be confi rmed that the authorities at all levels eff ectively regulate all four stages of the reproducible process. Under market conditions has declined signifi cantly. Despite the reduction in the number of products in which there were catastrophic shortages of qualified personnel. There are no reliable mechanisms for infl uencing individual stages of the reproductive process. The introduction of market relations is due to the need to create new systems for managing consultations, defi ning criteria and indicators for assessing its eff ectiveness. An important modern problem that requires serious and in-depth study. For all categories of workers, providing enterprises with qualifi ed personnel, it is necessary to create a system of continuing professional education. Nowadays, several of the global challenges we are facing include the fast pace of life and rapidly occurring changes, therefore when interacting with this changeable life environment it is important for the young people to self-develop, self-manage, as well as be themselves in charge of their personal change and career management. This article studies the latest scientific trends, providing scientific justification to the student readiness for their career self-management. In the process of developing this justification, it was essential to understand the criteria and indicators for the student readiness for their career self-management, in order for the young people to be able to self-assess the said readiness during their entire lifetime. Therefore  the aim of the study was to develop the theoretical foundations for the term “student readiness for career self-management” within the context of general secondary education, including both criteria and indicators for the assessment which could in its turn become a methodological foundation for developing methodology for the readiness for career self-management. As a result of this study, the theoretical findings from the scientific literature on the essence and readiness for career self-management were gathered, examined, analysed, systemized and evaluated.

This article presents a review of a textbook for universities which reflects classic and relevant knowledge about education — the basic social institution of the global world. The theoretical foundations for branch science, its history, subject matter and functions have been outlined in the textbook. This review details the specifics of the authors’ approach towards presenting the social knowledge about education development stages, while presenting a variety of theoretical directions and models in their dynamics — from their genesis and to the present day. The originality of the textbook is reflected not only in the research ideas, but also in the civic position of the authors, in them identifying the problems of international competition between education systems, as well as the most acute issues inherent to Russian education. The latter include susceptibility to ill-conceived reforms, a backward technical base, low social status of teachers, lacking teacher motivation at schools, unwillingness to solve emerging complex problems, an intergenerational cultural gap, and a low demand for scientific knowledge. The book contains the authors’ teaching materials for constructing the “Sociology of Education” training course, while offering a reliable glossary of scientific terms. The textbook will be in demand both for the process of educating college and postgraduate students, and within the professional sociological community.

In North America, post-secondary music education is heavily focused on (and limited to) the repertoire and techniques of the Western Art Music canon. Vocal training at these institutions is no exception: vocalists are trained in the bel canto technique whose lineage reaches back to seventeenth-century Italy. This conservatory-based curriculum supports a categorical vocal pedagogy, one that seeks to produce a particular type of singer with a very specific kind of sound. Instead of embracing what each individual singer is capable of, this model focuses on what singers should be capable of from the perspective of repertoire and technical mastery in the operatic tradition. In this paper I will argue that this model risks our losing sight of what the singer has to say in favour of what the composer has to say. Recently there has been discussion and research around a more inclusionary model of vocal pedagogy that would incorporate other techniques alongside bel canto. However, these discussions have been focused on inclusion of musical theatre and belt techniques, with very little discourse on the inclusion of extended vocal techniques. By drawing on the scholarly discourse on the limits and extensions of technical training in post-secondary vocal performance, as well as interviews with several women working in the performance and teaching of extended vocal techniques in Canada, I will explore the potential for extended vocal techniques to contribute to a more inclusive model of vocal pedagogy.

There has been a consistent interest in how people perform gender vocally. An under-utilized source of insight into the vocal presentation of self can be found in the passing guides transgender people circulate amongst themselves that analyze how cisgender people perform gender through the voice. This chapter uses transgender passing guides, feminist sociolinguistics, and vocal pedagogy literature to present a consolidated set of tools to analyze the construction of normative gender vocal performance. After presenting these tools, the chapter then uses them to analyze the musical performances of cisgender artists trying to pass as a different gender, cisgender queer artists twisting those vocal norms in order to make themselves audible as queer, and cisgender artists trying to pass as their own gender.

There is a large amount of overlap between the disciplines of singing and communication, particularly in the area of expression. Recent science based pedagogy written by Richard Miller is considered foundational knowledge in the vocal community, however, there are concerns that this anatomically focused pedagogy prevents the development of creative and expressive singers. A thematic analysis of two of Miller’s pedagogical texts was used to collect excerpts focused on the topic of expression. A second phase intention analysis revealed that the discussion of expression was largely uninstructive, providing teachers with minimal methodology. There is evidence that Miller addresses the importance of expression in vocal performance, however, his style of pedagogy does not allow for an in depth exploration of the tactics necessary for its instruction. Applying concepts from communication accommodation theory to the pedagogy will allow for the expansion of existing techniques such as modeling, convergence and divergence into the area of expression aiding vocal instructors in teaching the art of musical expression.
