In Finland, the nationally unified and standardized nursing documentation model comprises the nursing process model and the Finnish Care Classification (FinCC). The aim of the study was to assess how well the further developed FinCC complies with actual nursing practices and how pragmatic and understandable it is. An e-questionnaire based on the revised version of the FinCC was sent to healthcare organizations (n=34) and Universities of Applied Sciences (n=14). Data was gathered and organized in Excel. Narrative comments were read and analyzed. The mean of questions of 17 components of both the FICND and the FICNI was over four (scale 1–5). The biggest revision of the FinCC is that different scales and evidence-based research have been utilized in the development of the terminology. Based on the findings, revisions have been made, and the new version, FinCC 4.0, will be published at the end of 2019.

The work of landscape architects can contribute to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the associated ‘Leave no one behind’ agenda by creating accessible and health-promoting green spaces (especially goals 3, 10 and 11). To ensure that the design of green space delivers accessibility and intended health outcomes, an evidence-based design process is recommended. This is a challenge, since many landscape architects are not trained in evidence-based design, and leading scholars have called for methods that can help landscape architects work in an evidence-based manner. This paper examines the implementation of a process model for evidence-based health design in landscape architecture. The model comprises four steps: ‘evidence collection’, ‘programming’, ‘designing’, and ‘evaluation’. The paper aims to demonstrate how the programming step can be implemented in the design of a health-promoting nature trail that is to offer people with mobility disabilities improved mental, physical and social health. We demonstrate how the programming step systematizes evidence into design criteria (evidence-based goals) and design solutions (how the design criteria are to be solved in the design). The results of the study are presented as a design ‘Program’, which we hope can serve as an example for landscape architects of how evidence can be translated into design.

This note describes how integrating refugees into programs of social work education at universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany influenced the education provided, especially in rural areas where student bodies tend to be homogeneous groups. The refugees enrolled in social work courses changed those mostly homogeneous groups of students not only with their presence but moreover by introducing new perspectives on course content. As the changes prompted shifts in the global mindedness of fellow students and the teaching staff, the quality of the programs was enhanced.

AbstractBackgroundThere has been no evidence about the prescribing practices in psychiatric care in Eastern Europe.AimsTo examine the patterns of psychotropic prescribing in five countries of Eastern Europe.MethodWe conducted a one-day census of psychiatric treatments used in eight psychiatric hospitals in Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Romania. We examined clinical records and medication charts of 1304 patients.ResultsThe use of polypharmacy was frequent across all diagnostic groups. Only 6.8% of patients were on monotherapy. The mean number of prescribed drugs was 2.8 (SD 0.97) with 26.5% receiving two drugs, 42.1% receiving three drugs and 22.1% being prescribed four or more psychotropic drugs. Typical antipsychotics were prescribed to 63% and atypical antipsychotics to 40% of patients with psychosis. Older generations of antidepressants were prescribed to 29% of patients with depression. Anxiolitic drugs were prescribed to 20.4% and benzodiazepines to 68.5% of patients. One third of patients received an anticholinergic drug on a regular basis.ConclusionsOlder generation antipsychotics and antidepressants were used more frequently than in the countries of Western Europe. Psychotropic polypharmacy is a common practice. There is a need for adopting more evidence-based practice in psychiatric care in these countries.

Non-destructive measurements, based on near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, on biological material with a cellular structure like wood require a non-traditional approach. We have developed new concepts to model the optical properties of a sample having cellular structure, for the illumination conditions of the spectrometer available to us. A set of optical models, which consisted of the directional characteristics models, the light-path models and the equivalent surface roughness model was proposed to clarify the behaviour of light propagation in a wood sample. Furthermore, the mean optical path length, which was derived by incorporating the nth power cosine model of radiant intensity into the diffusion process model in consideration of the parallel beam component of incident light, was calculated. By introducing the concept of equivalent sample thickness, compatible with the mean optical path length, into the Kubelka–Munk theory, generalised input/output equations for radiation were constructed. In this non-traditional application of NIR spectroscopy, these optical concepts make it possible to analyse both the physical condition and chemical composition of a biological material with a cellular structure.

Evidence-based practice has its roots in evidence-based medicine. This term refers to the formulation of treatment decision using the best available research evidence. While the concept has gained increased attention among health care workers in the recent past, practice based on scientific evidence has been recommended for over 300 years. However, all health-related professions continue to report difficulties adopting evidence-based practice. Notably, practitioners are often concerned that results of population-based research may not be relevant for their specific patients. This may be of particular concern for occupational therapists who aim to provide client-centred intervention, taking into consideration individual characteristics of the client, the environment and the occupation. As well, those wishing to practice evidence-based occupational therapy must determine which decisions are made during the course of therapy and what evidence may impact on these decisions. The Occupational Performance Process Model (Fearing, Law & Clark, 1997) outlines the occupational therapy problem solving process and assists therapists to integrate knowledge from both client and therapist. A framework for evidence-based occupational therapy is presented, based on this model.

Journal clubs are closely interlinked with evidence based practice. At Faculty of Social and Health Sciences at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences our students are required to write literature reviews for their bachelor degree, and there is an increasing need for guiding the students into academic methodology through critically assessing research articles.  The purposes of starting journal clubs at our faculty is to guide the students into the academic genre, to help them gain confidence in reading research articles, and to broaden the perspective between theory and practice. Better semester grade is a secondary goal to our aim as it probably is hard to operationalize. We wish to establish a cooperation with the faculty staff, especially the ones involved in teaching evidence based practice.  Wilson & Deighton (2016) describes that students find it difficult to approach research articles, and that journal clubs are suitable and an activating manner to introduce the students to the academic genre. Deenadayalan et al. (2008) comments that using case studies as a basis for academic discussion, fills the gap between theory and practical approach to the subject. There are several elements to pay attention to if the journal clubs are to become a success, and Deenadayalan et al. (2008) emphasizes among other things a clear purpose for the students' involvement, as well as leadership, insentives and preparedness. In our project dating, we wish to discuss the possibility to do pilots for nursing students either in the last semesters of their courses, or with master students. We are interested in previous experiences with nursing students, and we want to look into which factors that makes the clubs function and how our aim might be reached.

There is uncertainty in the neuromusculoskeletal system, and deterministic models cannot describe this significant presence of uncertainty, affecting the accuracy of model predictions. In this paper, a knee joint angle prediction model based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals is proposed. To address the instability of EMG signals and the uncertainty of the neuromusculoskeletal system, a non-parametric probabilistic model is developed using a Gaussian process model combined with the physiological properties of muscle activation. Since the neuromusculoskeletal system is a dynamic system, the Gaussian process model is further combined with a non-linear autoregressive with eXogenous inputs (NARX) model to create a Gaussian process autoregression model. In this paper, the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) and the correlation coefficient (CC) are compared between the joint angle prediction results of the Gaussian process autoregressive model prediction and the actual joint angle under three test scenarios: speed-dependent, multi-speed and speed-independent. The mean of NRMSE and the mean of CC for all test scenarios in the healthy subjects dataset and the hemiplegic patients dataset outperform the results of the Gaussian process model, with significant differences (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05, p < 0.05 and p < 0.05). From the perspective of uncertainty, a non-parametric probabilistic model for joint angle prediction is established by using Gaussian process autoregressive model to achieve accurate prediction of human movement.
