Objective: How people use social rank (dominance vs prestige) could explain different attitudes toward five moral foundations. This study aimed to investigate the differential relationships between prestige, dominance, and moral foundations. Methods: This study was conducted on 150 participants who responded to the moral foundation questionnaire and dominance-prestige scale. Results: Multiple regression analysis revealed that prestige was positively associated with four kinds of moral foundations (harm/care, reciprocity/fairness, loyalty/subversion, and purity/sanctity), whereas dominance was negatively associated with harm/care, reciprocity/fairness, and progressivism. Prestige had a stronger association with moral foundations than dominance. Conclusion: It seems that dominance as a social status seeking-strategy is against any moral foundation, but prestige could increase attention to moral foundations in decision making toward every life issue.

Income smoothing is affected by some factors, one of these factors is political costs (PCs) which firms may pay to get information, trading, and negotiation which is imposed by the decision making and legislating authorities. Hence, the association between PCs and income smoothing is tested by focusing on Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX), especially EGX 30, which included the most active firms, for a ten-year period from 2006 to 2015 for 63 firms, including 417 completed observations, the sample represented 10 different sectors. Two main hypotheses were formulated and tested, the first hypothesis consists of four sub-hypotheses, it was tested using multiple regression analysis, and the second hypothesis tested by testing the moderating effect of Egyptian revolution 2011 on the association between PCs and income smoothing. The findings are; first, PCs proxies have a positive and significant effect on income smoothing, second, there is a negative and significant moderating effect of Egyptian revolution 2011 on the association between firm size only and income smoothing.

Banks are the primary users of accounting information. A bank also has non-accounting information before giving a decision to prospective debtors in lending loans. The discussion in this study focuses on accounting information on whether it can be used to predict a credit decision taken by the bank. Non-accounting information is a control variable in this study. This research aims to gather empirical evidence about the problem. This research took place at the Bank Mandiri Medan branch of Imam Bonjol. By the purpose of this study, a multiple regression analysis models are used to test the research hypothesis regarding the effect of accounting information on credit decisions. The population in this study was all applications for working capital loans that had been approved by the bank in 2001. The samples drawn were 40 applications for credit for which the bank had approved credit. The results of the study indicate that accounting information is not entirely influential on credit decision making whereas non-accounting information that influences bank credit decisions is the guaranteed value and experience of the prospective debtor leader.

Aims and MethodTo establish if participants with schizophrenia receiving depot antipsychotics had less insight than similar participants receiving oral atypical antipsychotics. We assessed the difference between these two groups.ResultsParticipants on oral antipsychotics had greater insight than those on depot antipsychotics (ITAQ, P=0.01). In the multiple regression analysis, only receiving depot antipsychotics contributed significantly to explaining variance in insight (adjusted R2=0.135, F=8.99, P=0.004).Clinical ImplicationsDepot antipsychotics seem to be prescribed to a subgroup of people with schizophrenia who are likely to be less adherent because of lower levels of insight. These individuals are on significantly higher doses of antipsychotic medication. Clinicians should review their patients on depot antipsychotics at regular intervals.

Aims and methodTo compare the frequency of experiences of stigma reported by people with schizophrenia and by people with other health problems (depression and malignancies). The Stigma section of the Consumer Experiences of Stigma Questionnaire (CESQ) was administered to 153 people with schizophrenia, 106 people with depression and 85 people with malignancies.ResultsUsing multiple regression analysis we showed that after controlling for the differences in the participants' background characteristics, people with depression did not differ significantly in terms of the frequency of self-reported stigma experiences from patients with schizophrenia (β = − 0.064, P < 0.05). However, patients with malignancies felt stigmatised significantly less often than patients with schizophrenia β= − 0.240, P < 0.05).Clinical implicationsOur findings confirm that the stigma of mental illness is more pronounced than the stigma associated with physical health problems. Contrary to expectations, however, we were not able to demonstrate that people with depression are treated more favourably and experience less stigma than people with schizophrenia.

Purpose Even though the definitions of morality may seem to provide straightforward criteria to assess the morality of individuals, moral judgments are challenging and less exact. This paper aims to advance extant work on morality and moral judgment by providing a conceptualization of boundary conditions in the relationship between moral judgments and consumer behavior. Design/methodology/approach An interdisciplinary literature review is conducted to integrate extant knowledge on morality, moral judgment and consumer behavior to identify and conceptualize boundary conditions affecting moral judgments and decision-making. The research draws on moral foundation theory and norm activation model, and the proposed factors and relationships are grounded in construal level theory and regulatory focus theory. Findings The research identifies cultural, individual and situational factors that influence moral judgments and decision-making and argues that moral judgments exhibit a similar pattern across types, but cultural factors determine the salience of each moral foundation type. Moreover, construal factors relevant to the situation (i.e. proximity vs distance) affect the extent and manner of moral judgments, and individual mindsets and their associated information processing styles (e.g. money vs time orientation and promotion vs prevention orientation) make moral judgments more malleable, adding a degree of variability to judgments within similar cultures and situations. Originality/value The research makes a rather unique contribution to consumer morality literature by identifying and discussing three different groups of factors with the potential to impact individuals’ judgments of, and reactions to, moral foundation violation information.

SynopsisBoth motivational and defect theories have been offered to explain variations in insight among schizophrenic individuals but the results of tests of these theories have been inconclusive and inconsistent. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that both motivation and cognitive deficits affect insight, with a trade-off between the two processes, giving rise to quadratic relationships between insight and cognitive deficits. Twenty-six schizophrenic patients completed battery of neuropsychological tests and participated in an interview designed to assess insight. In a multiple regression analysis predicting test results from insight scores, the linear component was non-significant while the quadratic component accounted for a highly significant 56% of the variance. Theoretical and clinical implications of this result are discussed briefly.

Aims and methodTo examine the effect of taking an elective psychiatry and literature course during the first year of medical school on performance in the later mandatory general psychiatry curriculum. Class members were surveyed for baseline characteristics at the time of their admission to medical school. Following completion of their fourth year, average grades in psychiatry were calculated and results compared for those who did and those who did not take the course. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the effects of baseline characteristics that were significantly different between the groups.ResultsStudents who took the course had statistically significant (t = −3.34, P <0.001) higher grades in fourth year psychiatry. They had lower admission interview scores (t = −2.15, P <0.05) and reported less academic stress (t = −9.55, P <0.01) before taking the course.Clinical implicationsLiterature is an effective medium through which to teach medical students psychiatry as it can lead to a greater understanding of the topic.
