TEACHING READING BY UTILIZING HOT POTATOES SOFTWARE TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

The objective of this study is to measure whether there is or not significant effect of teaching reading by utilizing Hot Potatoes software toward students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. The variables used were the teaching treatment of Hot Potatoes Software as the independent variable and the students’ reading comprehension of Descriptive Text as dependent variable. Then, the research designed was Quasi-experimental design and the presentation of data used was quantitative. The data were obtained from the eleventh grade, of which 28 students were taken as sample. The students are divided into two groups; experiment group consisted of 12 students and control group consists of 16 students. To get the data, the pre-test and post-test were applied and then analyzed using t-test formula. The researcher had concluded that there is Significant effect of Hot Potatoes Software toward the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The result showed that mean of students’ post-test was increased. It is proved by the t-test (8.54) which is higher than t-table (2.05) at level of significance 5%. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and it proved that Hot Potatoes Software had significant effect toward students’ reading comprehension of Descriptive Text

The research was aimed to find out the effect of gallery walk strategy toward reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was quasi-experimental research with an experimental group and control group pre-test and post-test. These two groups were selected to be a sample by using cluster random sampling. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that t-test score was 2.351 while the t-table was 2.001. Since t-test score was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of gallery walk strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of applying Learning Together Method on the students’ reading comprehension. This study used the experimental design. The population of this study was the students of SMP Negeri 1 Muara. There were sixty students of eighth class as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Learning Together Method while control group was taught without applying Learning Together Method. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice test which consists of 20 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder-Richardson (KR-21) formula. The calculation shows the reliability was 0.82(high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation shows that t-observed (4.9) is higher than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that teaching reading comprehension by applying Learning Together Method significantly affect reading comprehension. Keywords: Learning Together Method, Reading Comprehension

Reading is one of the important skills that the students have to master. However, many students have difficulties in comprehending the reading text. To solve this condition, the researcher used schema activation strategy to help students understand reading comprehension. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether the use of schema activation strategy is effective or not in teaching reading comprehension at the second-grade students of MTs Tarbiyatul Mustafid in academic year 2017/2018. This study was quasi-experimental design using two classes were VIII B class was taken as an experimental class, and VII-A was taken as control class. The population of this research involved 60 students from the second grade in MTs Tarbiyatul Mustafid Batu Simpang. By using purposive sampling, the researcher took the students as a sample. In collecting the data, this study used pre-test, treatment, and post-test as the data collection procedure then followed by analyzing the data by using the t-test formula. Then the result of statistical analysis of t-test in this research was 2.85. It was higher than critical values for t- table in the degree of freedom (df) of 58 is 2.021(0.05%) and 2.704(0.01%). The researcher concludes that mean score before and after teaching by using schema activation strategy has a difference. It means the alternative hypothesis (ha) was accepted. The use of schema activation strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the second-grade students of MTs Tarbiyatul Mustafid Batu Rimpang is effective.

The objective of the study is to find out whether it is effective or not using jigsaw learning model in teaching reading comprehension of  spoof text to the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 13 Palembang. In this study, the researcher used experimental method. The population of this study is all the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 13 Palembang with the total numbers of students was 392. Therefore, the sample of the study is 72 students consist two classes,namely: 36 students for control group and 36 students for experimental group. The sample was taken by using non purposisve random sampling method. The data collected by using written test consist of 30 questions and the type of questions is multiple choice.  The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test which were pair sample t-test and independent sample t-test was known as: mean of post test in expermental group was 72.22 higher than past test mean score of control group was 58.64. Furthermore, the result of t-obtained was 6.132 and t-table was 2.030, it shows that t-obtained was higher than t-table. From the explanation above, there were significant difference between the experimental group that have been taught by using jigsaw learning model and control group that was not taught using treatment. It means that, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It was concluded that it was effective of using jigsaw learning model to teach reading comprehension of spoof text to the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 13 Palembang.

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of using Monitoring, Questioning, and Repredicting strategy on students reading comprehension. This study used the experimental design. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Trisakti 2 Medan. There were sixty students as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Monitoring, Questioning and Repredicting Strategy while control group was taught without using Monitoring, Questioning, and Repredicting Strategy. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice test which consists of 20 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder-Richardson (KR-20) formula. The calculation shows that reliability was 0.70 (high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation shows that t-observed (5.12) is higher than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that teaching reading comprehension by using Monitoring, Questioning, and Repredicting strategy significantly affect reading comprehension.

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not Think-Pair-Share Strategy develops the students’ reading comprehension. The researcher applied quasi-experimental with the form of pre-test and post-test control group design and took the second year students of senior high school as the population. The researcher employed cluster random sampling consists of 60 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test in form of reading test. To find out whether or not Think-Pair-Share strategy develops the students’ reading comprehension, the researcher used t-test analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that the value of t-counted (5.747) was greater than the value of the t-table (2.002) at the level of significance (a = 0.05) and the degree of freedom df = 58 which meant that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Based on the result of data analysis, the mean score of students’ post-test (84.44) was greater than the mean score of students’ pre-test (63.11). Based on the finding and discussion, the researcher concludes that Think-Pair-Share strategy is effective and gives positive effect to the students’ reading comprehension achievement.

The objectives of the research were; to describe the implementation of THIEVES strategy to the 10th grade students of MAN 1 Pangkalpinang; to figure out if there is any significant difference between the students who are taught by using THIEVES strategy and the students who are not taught by using non - THIEVES strategy to the 10th grade students of MAN 1 Pangkalpinang. In this research the researcher used quantitative approach with experimental research that was quasi-experimental design. The total samples was 78 students, consisted of X MIA 3 was 39 students as experimental group and X IIS 1 was 39 students as control group. The result of the test was analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 of Paired Sample t-test and Independent sample t-test. Based on the result of analysis there were two research findings. First, the implementation of THIEVES strategy usage could improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It could be seen that the pre-test mean score in experimental group was 46.000 and control group was 45.179. Meanwhile, the post-test mean score in experimental group was 70.769 and control group was 68.461. Second, there was a significance difference between students who were taught by using THIEVES strategy and students who were not. It was known from the result of independent samples t-test. The t obtained was higher than t table (5.872 > 1.684) and the p output was lower than computation with level significant (0.000 < 0.05). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It could be concluded that THIEVES strategy was effective to improve students’ reading comprehension.

The aim of this study was to find out the effect of Question Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy in increasing students’ reading comprehension. The method used in this research was quasi experimental design. The sample of this study was 30 students of X hospitality accommodation, selected by using the purposive sampling method. They were divided into two classes, 15 students as experimental class who were taught using Question Answer Relationship Strategy and 15 others as control classes who were not taught by using QAR Strategy. In collecting data, the researchers provide tests twice, namely pre-test and post-test. Before conducting the post-test the, researcher gave three treatments in the experimental and control classes with different teaching. The instrument used in this study was 20 multiple choice questions about narrative texts that had been declared valid. The data obtained from pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the t-table was 1.76 and the result of the t-test was 2.690. It revealed that the t-test is bigger than the t-table (2.690> 1.76). Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In brief, QAR Relationship Strategy can be one of effective ways in teaching reading for tenth grade students of SMK Yadika Model Lubuk Linggau.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether or not there was a significant effect of using REDW ( Read, Examine, Decide, Write ) strategy on reading comprehension and to know the significant difference of reading comprehension between students who are taught by using REDW (Read, Examine, Decide, Write) strategy and those who are not . The study was conducted at Islamic Junior High School Tarbiyah Islamiyah Jambi. The population in this study were all eighth graders, each class consisted of less than 30 students. The researcher used REDW strategy in class 8B as the experimental class and class 8A used conventional method as control class. This research used quantitative – experimental approach. The design of study was quasi-experimental design, it was the pretest-posttest non- equivalent group design. The data was collected by a test as research instruments, there were two test: pre-test and posttest. From the results of the test, the independent t-test calculation in posttest score in both groups showed that the significant value was higher than level of significance (0.870 > 0.05). It indicated that there was the significant difference between experimental and control group. Moreover, the paired t-test calculation showed the result of paired sample t-test (5.949 < 0.05) in which there was a significant effect of using REDW strategy on students reading comprehension.

The aim of research is to know the effectiveness of Number Head Together (NHT) in Teaching Reading Comprehension at tenth grade students of MAN 4 Kediri. Quantitative post-test only control group design used the approach to design this research. The subject of the research is tenth grade student of MAN 4 Kediri. The subject were X MIA 1 class as experimental class which consist of 36 students and X MIA 2 class as control class which consist of 36 students. To get data, the researcher use test. The data analyzed by using t- test can be found with SPSS 16.0. The mean score of students’ reading comprehension in experimental class belongs to very good category. Its score 83.19. Meanwhile, the mean score in control class belongs to good category with mean score 77.22. The result of statistical computation value of the independent sample t-test is 3.050 with t table within degree of freedom (df) 70 at 5% significant level is 2.647. It can be seen that t-statistic value is higher than t-table. Because there is significant increase in student’s reading comprehension after doing treatment, it can be said that number head together in reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of MAN 4 Kediri in academic year 2018/2019 is effective. So the alternative hypothesis was accepted.
