The aim of this study was to find out the effect of Question Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy in increasing students’ reading comprehension. The method used in this research was quasi experimental design. The sample of this study was 30 students of X hospitality accommodation, selected by using the purposive sampling method. They were divided into two classes, 15 students as experimental class who were taught using Question Answer Relationship Strategy and 15 others as control classes who were not taught by using QAR Strategy. In collecting data, the researchers provide tests twice, namely pre-test and post-test. Before conducting the post-test the, researcher gave three treatments in the experimental and control classes with different teaching. The instrument used in this study was 20 multiple choice questions about narrative texts that had been declared valid. The data obtained from pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the t-table was 1.76 and the result of the t-test was 2.690. It revealed that the t-test is bigger than the t-table (2.690> 1.76). Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In brief, QAR Relationship Strategy can be one of effective ways in teaching reading for tenth grade students of SMK Yadika Model Lubuk Linggau.

There have been many studies on English grammar, but a dearth of studies has been conducted in the cross-sectional fields such as seeking how the field of grammar makes contributions to reading comprehension. Accordingly, the current study sought to find out the impacts of explicit and implicit instructions of English connectors on EFL students’ reading comprehension. 50 third semester students from an English department at a university in Bengkulu were incorporated as the samples. Adopting a quasi-experimental method, those 50 students were split into two classes, the so-called experimental and control classes. Students in the experimental class were taught English connectors explicitly, and those of the control class were taught English connectors implicitly. Before eight times of treatments in the form of the two ways of instructions, students of the two group were given a valid and reliable reading comprehension pre-test, and a similar construct of post-test was given after the eighth treatments ended. The data of the current study were analyzed by deploying paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The present study revealed that explicit and implicit instructions of English connectors had positive impacts on EFL students’ reading comprehension. However, the explicit instruction of English connectors enhanced EFL students’ reading comprehension more significantly and more effectively. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to replicate the present study in different contexts for the sake of providing rich data to confirm the current study’s results.

The objectives of the research were; to describe the implementation of THIEVES strategy to the 10th grade students of MAN 1 Pangkalpinang; to figure out if there is any significant difference between the students who are taught by using THIEVES strategy and the students who are not taught by using non - THIEVES strategy to the 10th grade students of MAN 1 Pangkalpinang. In this research the researcher used quantitative approach with experimental research that was quasi-experimental design. The total samples was 78 students, consisted of X MIA 3 was 39 students as experimental group and X IIS 1 was 39 students as control group. The result of the test was analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 of Paired Sample t-test and Independent sample t-test. Based on the result of analysis there were two research findings. First, the implementation of THIEVES strategy usage could improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It could be seen that the pre-test mean score in experimental group was 46.000 and control group was 45.179. Meanwhile, the post-test mean score in experimental group was 70.769 and control group was 68.461. Second, there was a significance difference between students who were taught by using THIEVES strategy and students who were not. It was known from the result of independent samples t-test. The t obtained was higher than t table (5.872 > 1.684) and the p output was lower than computation with level significant (0.000 < 0.05). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It could be concluded that THIEVES strategy was effective to improve students’ reading comprehension.

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was significantly effective to apply the Inquiry Based Learning Approach in teaching reading comprehension for the tenth grade students. In this research, the researcher proposed two hypotheses. They were null hypothesis (Ho) and alternative hypothesis (Ha). The method applied was pre-experimental with one group pre-test posttest design. The object of this research consisted of 20 students. The data were collected by means of test consisting 20 items of multiple choices. The data obtained were analyzed through three techniques: 1) Individual Score, 2) Conversion of Individual Score Based on Minimum Mastery Criteria, and 3) Matched t-test. The results of this research shows that  the students’ mean  score in the pre-test was 60.13 and those in the  post-test was 75.25. The result of matched t-test was 5.25, which was higher than t-table value (1.725) of 20 with 95% significant level for one tailed-test. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that it was significantly effective in teaching reading to the tenth grade students by applying Based Learning Approach.

Abstract: The facts and phenomenon that most of senior high school students still encounter or face problems in understanding and answering the questions in reading texts led the researchers to conduct this quasi-experimental research, in line with teaching reading narrative through Inking Your Thinking strategy. This research is aimed at figuring out whether or not there is any significant difference in the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievements at SMA Negeri 2 Prabumulih among those who are taught by using Inking Your Thinking strategy and those who are not. To collect the data and to meet the objectives, the researchers used two kinds of tests (i.e. pretest and posttest) which were given to 62 students. To analyze the data, the researchers used T-test. The results of the difference analyses on experimental and control groups by using independent sample t-test showed that t-obtained was 4.839 greater than t-table which was 1.671 at the significant level p<0.05 in two tailed testing with df=60. It means that there was significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievements among those who are taught by using Inking Your Thinking strategy and those who are not. In conclusion, Inking Your Thinking strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension achievements.   Keywords: inking your thinking strategy, reading comprehension, narrative text
