Objective: To evaluate the insecticidal effectiveness of biorational and conventional products as alternatives to control thrips and their phytotoxic effects in strawberry cultivation. Design / methodology / approach: The research was carried out in strawberry cv. Camino Real during its flowering stage - fruiting established in open ground; A completely randomized experimental design with seven treatments and four replications was used. The treatments evaluated were: T1: neem oil extract, T2: paraffin oil, T3: garlic extract + hot chili pepper + cinnamon, T4: spinosad, T5: imidacloprid + lambda cyhalothrin, T6: bifenthrin, and T7: control. Applications were made weekly and the mortality evaluation was carried out by counting the number of live thrips per flower. With the obtained data, an analysis of variances and a mean comparison test (Tukey, p ≤ 0.05) were performed. Results: Significant differences between treatments could be identified (p ≤ 0.05); imidacloprid + lambda cyhalothrin and bifenthrin caused the highest mortality of thrips with 92 and 93 % efficacy, respectively. Spinosad obtained good results, ranking as the second-best option with 90 % control efficiencies; neem extract stood out as an excellent biorational pest management alternative with 77 % control efficacy in its last evaluation. No phytotoxic effects were observed from any of the treatments on the crop. Limitations on study / implications: It is important to continue the study in the laboratory to obtain the LD50 and LD90 of the management alternatives, as well as an MRL analysis of the molecules used. Findings / conclusions: The proposed protocol evidenced the efficacy of biorational and ecological thrips control treatments in intensive horticultural systems.

Stock status of fish resources were a basis advices to define an apropriate fisheries management towards sustainable fish resource. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stock status of fish resources and its management alternative in FMAs. The study was conducted from 2015 to 2016 using a holistic and analytic method. Estimation of all fish potency in Indonesia marine waters was 12.54 million tons/year which the highest potency was small pelagic fish group about 4.88 million tons/year (39 %) and the lowest potency was spiny lobster group about 11,159 tons/year (1 %). Based on the FMAs, the highest potency was about 2.64 million tons/year (21 %) in FMA 718 (Aru sea and Arafura sea) and the lowest potency was about 425,444 tons/year (3 %) found in FMA 571 (Malacca strait and Andaman sea). Most of fish resources was in the condition of fully-exploited (44 % yellow color) followed by overfishing (34 % red color) and moderate (21 % green color). Fish groups which included in the highest overfishing by FMAs were squid group. Management alternatives in those prespective are suggested to decrease the fishing effort at the level of f.opt (fishing optimum) by fish groups on the FMAs experiencing overfishing accordingly and to increase an effort at the level of f opt for fish groups on the FMAs in the fully exploited and moderate condition

Abstract Background The neem tree, Azadirachta indica, is very promising for the control of many insect pests, where it acting as feeding deterrents, oviposition obstruction and as a growth regulator. Results In this study, both neem extract and neem nanoemulsion significantly decreased the adult emergence of Meteorus gyrator. It was found that all concentrations of neem nanoemulsion especially high concentrations (800, 400, and 200 ppm) have adversely affected some biological parameters of this parasitoid. Also, they have a harmful effect as reducing fecundity, oviposition, and shortened the longevity of M. gyrator. Conclusion It has been proved that neem nanoemulsion is more harmful than neem oil extract for the hymenopteran parasitoid M. gyrator.

The objective of this work was to determine the sink-source relationships and their effects on the number and growth of runner tips of 'Camino Real' strawberry stock plants. Three types of sources were evaluated: one defoliation at 96 days after planting (DAP), two defoliations at 50 and 96 DAP, and mother plants without defoliation. Four types of sink were accessed: runner tips collected weekly and monthly, four stolons with rooted runner tips in pots, and four freely-grown stolons. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a split-plot arrangement, with four replicates. The source types were placed in the plots, and sink types in the subplots. The number of runner tips, the crown diameter, and the dry matter mass were determined. Number and growth of tips were higher on plants without defoliation, and decreased 44.7% on twice-defoliated mother plants. The two-defoliation management did not reduce runner tip dry matter mass only on plants with rooted stolons, which produced runner tips 50% heavier. Defoliation of mother plants bearing rooting stolons can be used to reduce their growth, without reducing the emission and growth of runner tips.

Research focused on alternative methods to control Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande), encompassing chemicals from varying classes, parasitic nematodes, microbial insecticides, and physical/mechanical deterrents. Chemical spray applications were applied weekly for 4 to 6 weeks. Experiment 1 made comparisons between fenoxycarb (Precision), bifenthrin (Talstar), and entomopathogenic nematodes (Biosafe). Experiment 2 compared abamectin (Avid), spinosyn A and D (Spinosad), azadirachtin (neem extract: Margosan-O), and diatomaceous earth (a physical control aimed at deterring pupation). Experiment 3 compared Spinosad, fipronil, and two microbial insecticides (Naturalis-O and Mycotrol). The number of thrips counted in flowers after treatments had been applied indicated that the strict chemical treatments (Avid, Spinosad, fipronil) provided quick knockdown and overall longer-term population control. Microbial insecticides, diatomaceous earth, and nematodes maintained populations at a lower level than the control, but were not as effective as strict chemical controls. Margosan-O, Precision, and Talstar controlled populations at medium levels. For periods when populations may cycle upward, more potent chemicals could be used (Spinosad, fipronil, and Avid) while still avoiding problems associated with more toxic chemicals.
