This study examines the effect of ownership structures (insiders ownership, shareholders dispersion and institutional investors) on debt policy. The variable that has a significant influence is institutional investors, while the insiders ownership variable has no significant effect but the direction of the inverse relationship with the debt ratio is in accordance with the theory. Shareholders dispersion variable does not have a significant influence and the direction of the relationship is not in accordance with the theory. These results indicate that the presence of institutional investors can reduce the role of debt in monitoring the behavior of managers, thereby reducing the total agency costs. Control variable. shows growth opportunities, firm size, asset structure and profitability affect the debt ratio and can be used as an instrument to support debt policy to minimize agency costs. Whereas dividend payments and tax rates are not. Using a sample of all companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange other than insurance and financial companies with a research period between 2008 and 2011

This study aims to provide empirical evidence related to the influence of family ownership, tax reform on corporate debt policy, and further prove the impact on the firm value. This study examined the effect of changes in tax rates in 2009 and 2010 on the relationship between family ownership structure and corporate debt policy. The population of this research is manufacturing companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange for 8 consecutive years (2006-2013), with the period of observation for 7 years (2007-2013). A period of 8 years was taken to see a company that is consistently listed on the Stock Exchange prior to the end of the observation period. The result of this study shows that tax reform from progressive tax rates to a flat rate does not affect the relationship between family ownership structure and corporate debt policy. In contrast to the year 2009, changing rate from 28% to 25% in late 2010 was a significant effect on the debt policy with the company of family ownership. Based on the results, it was found that family ownership and debt policy significantly affect the company's enterprise value. It can be concluded, the higher the family ownership, the company's value would be diminished. Instead, the company's value will increase when the company adds to its debt policy.

Keywords : debt policy, family ownership, firm value, tax reform.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how Moroccan institutional investors view dividend policy. It discusses the importance these investors attach to the dividend policy of their investee firms, how much influence they exercise in shaping investee firms’ dividend policies, their reactions to changes in dividends, and their views on various explanations for paying dividends. Design/methodology/approach A mail survey provides a respondent and firm profile and responses to 28 questions involving various explanations for paying dividends and 30 questions on different dividend issues. Findings Institutional investors attach substantial importance to dividend policy and prefer high dividend payments. Although liquidity needs are a major driver, taxes play little role in shaping dividend preferences. Respondents agree with multiple explanations for paying dividends giving the strongest support to catering, bird-in-the-hand, life cycle, signaling, and agency theories. Research limitations/implications Despite a high response rate, the number of respondents limits partitioning the sample and testing for significant differences between different groups. Practical implications The lack of communication between Casablanca Stock Exchange (CSE) listed firms and institutional investors may depress stock prices and increase volatility. The results suggest agency problems and a weak governance environment at the CSE. Originality/value This study documents the importance that institutional investors place on dividend policy, their reactions to changes in their investees’ dividend policy, and the methods used to influence these firms. It extends previous research by reporting the level of support Moroccan institutional investors give to various explanations for paying dividends.

This paper examines price and trading volume behavior surrounding announcements of changes in the composition of the liquidity (LQ) 45 and the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Equity Index at the Jakarta Stock Exchange. Unlike listing studies in the developed markets, the announcements of the LQ45 Index changes have no impact on share price and trading volume. This may be due to the small role of Indonesian domestic institutional investors and purely rule-based characteristics of the LQ45 Index. On the contrary, the markets do respond to the changes in Indonesian stocks composition of the MSCI Equity Index. It seems that global portfolio managers, who dominate trading at the Jakarta Stock Exchange, rebalanced their portfolio when the changes in the MSCI Equity Index occurred because their performances are generally benchmarks to the return on the Index.

The study analyses the role of institutional investors in improving firm performance. Unlike in developed economies where firm ownership is widely dispersed, firms in emerging economies such as India have substantial promoter shareholdings (often in a majority or close to a majority). Given the promoter control of Indian companies, the role of institutional investors as external monitors is analysed. Following Brickley, Lease, and Smith (1988) and Almazan, Hartzell, and Starks (2005), the study categorises institutional investors as pressure-sensitive and pressure-insensitive institutional investors. Panel data for non-financial firms from India included in National Stock Exchange (NSE) 500 over the period 2008–2017 is studied using fixed-effects models. The study finds that the increased ownership of pressure-insensitive institutional investors is positively associated with firm performance. Also, the increased ownership of pressure-sensitive institutional investors is negatively associated with firm performance. These findings are consistent with the view that pressure-insensitive institutional investors are more effective monitors compared to pressure-sensitive institutional investors. The study offers insights into the role of institutional investors in economies where firms have a substantial promoter shareholding. The study documents that even with a substantial promoter shareholding and control, pressure-insensitive institutional investors aid in enhancing firm value
