This paper describes an interpretive framework that is based on an integrated conceptual framework for intercultural communication as the focal point to understand the interconnectivity between social categories and intercultural interactions. Intercultural communication is communication between individuals who are culturally distinct. While a wide range of intercultural communication studies can be found in various literatures, none has offered an integrated conceptual framework to study intercultural interactions in a Malaysian context. There is a gap on an interpretive approach as a framework to support its data analysis and meaningful claims, particularly in multicultural and multilingual Malaysia. Thus, this paper offers an integrated conceptual framework based on intercultural communication, language and intercultural communication, social identity theory, and identity and interaction, to address face-to-face interactions between culturally diverse individuals. Besides adding on to the body of knowledge in intercultural communication, this paper assumes an impetus for approaching interdisciplinary future research in various intercultural interaction settings.

Abstract. This paper assesses the balance through a wide range of kinematic conditions assessment for later compare them with existing balance tests in clinical practice. The goal was to achieve a holistic measure of balance and more reliably identify what underlying systems are present in each of the tests. A total of 30 women with a mean age of 63.07 years (SD = 6.06) were evaluated with a triaxial instrument at the height of the spinous process of L4 while performing different tests of static and dynamic balance kinematic measurement. The results showed that as the required tasks increased in complexity, speed variations became larger and more complex. In turn, correlations were found with age and the result obtained previously in the Timed Up & Go test, confirming the correspondence between the velocity variations of the trunk and the state of postural control systems. This instrument has been reaffirmed as a single assessment tool for its ability to recognize and record the natural behavior of the body in combination with low cost. Both aspects make it potentially useful in clinical practice in different medical specialties. Larger study sample and collate data from the kinematic measurements with other physiological and anthropometric variables are suggested as possible improvements in future research.

Information Systems are widely used in the banking sector, as banks are information intensive. The investment in ISs by banking organizations will continue to increase for two reasons; everyone is using some kind of information systems in their day-to-day activities. Banking organizations cannot afford to be left behind technologically, since many customers are using these systems to manage their money, accounts and savings information. As the field of IS grows, the BIS literature did not mature to meet the needs of practice. One particular area that is in need for further exploration is the evaluation of IS currently in the banking sector. This paper develops a conceptual framework to examine the success of IS in the Egyptian BI. This adds value to the body of knowledge by investigating Information Systems Success. Depending on this investigation, researchers and scholars in the field of Information Systems can have a clear view to set their attitudes towards suitable future research studies which in turn contributes to the related accumulated knowledge in the field.

Social scientists have increasingly turned their attention to the conceptualization and measurement of different facets of the self to better understand public concern for the environment. Despite significant progress in this area, theoretical and methodological issues remain that could impede further progress. This article addresses several of these issues by providing a conceptual framework that integrates key features from two major theories used to understand self-environment relations. The framework is then utilized within a multimethod research design that emphasized theoretical and methodological correspondence and precision to develop and assess a measure of ecological identity. The results provide solid evidence of the reliability and validity of the Ecological Identity Scale and the utility of the conceptual framework designed to support it. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that ecological identity influences a wide range of environmental behaviors both directly and indirectly via worldviews and social values. Recommendations for future research are offered.

Abstract Background Sanitation issues have aroused widespread concern around the world, and scholars began research in this area as early as the 1920s. After decades of development, there is a great amount of research on this topic, and the body of research continues to grow rapidly. Methods Based on the Web of Science Core Collection databases from 1990–2019, this paper applies the bibliometric method to analyze the research characteristics and developments of scientific publications about sanitation. Visualized knowledge mapping is employed to investigate development status, scientific collaboration, involved disciplines, research hotspots and emerging trends of this field. Results The breadth and depth of sanitation studies has improved significantly as the number of related publications increases rapidly in the 21st century. The strength of developed countries is greater than that of developing countries; the comprehensive strength of the United States ranks first in the field, followed by England and Switzerland. This field is a highly interdisciplinary field that covers a wide range of interests, and institutional collaboration is increasing in this field. Keyword clustering analysis shows that the main research topics in the domain of sanitation could be summarized as: (a) drinking water; (b) sustainability; (c) biofilm; (d) epidemiology; and (e) WaSH. Meanwhile, keyword bursts analysis showed that the new research hotspots and research frontiers mainly concentrated on: (a) Sustainable development of sanitation services adapting to climate change; (b) Main determinants affecting child malnutrition; (c) Multinational research and model innovation; and (d) Evaluations on various aspects of performance. Conclusions Through in-depth analysis of sanitation research, this paper provides a better understanding of trends that have emerged over the past 30 years, and can serve as a reference for future research.

Artefact design is not neutral, but is aimed, whether consciously or not, at different categories of users, as explained in Chapter 1. This chapter will explore design intentions as they relate to different user-groups in more detail, investigating some of the ways artefacts function to construct and maintain social categories, and also how these categories may be resisted or questioned by users. Firstly, we will examine how artefact design relates to the Roman life course, through an exploration of the motifs on finger-rings and the social categories of men, women, and children. Secondly, Roman attitudes to leftand right-handedness may be examined in relation to various items. Thirdly, we will examine some particular types of boxes and their methods of opening, artefacts in which cultural knowledge potentially impacts upon the facility with the objects may be used. In each case, we will consider how the design features may include or exclude certain users and what the implications are for a wider understanding of both Roman social practice, and the role of artefacts in enacting and reproducing social norms and behaviours. Finger-rings, among other personal artefacts, are scaled to a specific part of the body, and through this feature they provide an opportunity to examine how artefacts may have been designed for particular categories of people. Users will need rings with an appropriate diameter that is large enough to fit a particular digit, yet not so large that it risks becoming lost. Finger sizes of course vary according to age and sex, and so provide an opportunity to examine objects designed specifically for women, children, and men. We will focus here on those finger-rings displaying a central motif (usually engraved, although sometimes in relief, or occurring as a modelled form), which exist in large numbers. Most are oval in shape, and they are found in a wide range of sizes, from 9 to 27mm in inner horizontal diameter. Many are gem-set rings, and the gem iconography that they display was remarkably consistent across the Roman Empire, consisting of a range of popular themes such as the principal deities and/or their attributes, personifications, mythological scenes, animals, portraits, and objects.

Abstract Background and Objectives This review investigates the contribution of discursive approaches to the study of ageism in working life. It looks back on the 50 years of research on ageism and the body of research produced by the discursive turn in social science and gerontology. Research Design and Methods This study followed the five-step scoping review protocol to define gaps in the knowledge on ageism in working life from a discursive perspective. 851 papers were extracted from electronic databases and, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, 39 papers were included in the final review. Results The selected articles were based on discursive approaches and included study participants along the full continuum of working life (workers, retirees, jobseekers, students in training). Three main themes representing the focal point of research were identified, namely, experiences of ageism, social construction of age and ageism, and strategies to tackle (dilute) ageism. Discussion and Implications Discursive research provides undeniable insights into how participants experience ageism in working life, how ageism is constructed, and how workers create context-based strategies to counteract age stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Discursive research on ageism in the working life need further development about the variety of methods and data, problematization of age-based labelling and grouping of workers, and a focus on the intersection between age and other social categories. Further research in these areas can deepen our understanding of how age and ageism are constructed and can inform policies about ways of disentangling them in working life.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to sketch out the general tendencies, gaps and opportunities within the body of research studying the social web as a new facet of public librarianship in order to delineate the findings so far and suggest directions for future research. Design/methodology/approach – Literature searches were conducted through the Library, Information Science and Technology Abstract database, The ISI Web of Science database and the Directory of Open Access Journals. A selection process in two steps resulted in 44 articles that were subjected to a two-stage analysis and coding process: a coding analysis based on the stated aims or research questions of each article and analysis of the articles as clusters around a shared theme. Findings – The articles, exhibiting a richness and diversity in research directions, are dispersed in a wide range of journals and the topics addressed cover a variety of segments within Library and Information Science. Despite this diversity, research exploring the consequences of the social web for public libraries in situ and considerations of research on the broader political economic conditions of the public library institution in late modernity is largely lacking. Furthermore, the status of librarianship and the professional expertise of librarians, in light of the social web, need to be further addressed. Originality/value – The rising interest and investment of library professionals into the practices, principles and technologies of the social web calls for further studies into the consequences of this ongoing development for public library services. This paper gives a preliminary overview of the research done 2006-2012 and identifies gaps in the literature that may serve as a point of departure for future research.
