In the global competitive era Quality of Work Life of employees is important to attract and retain skilled and talented employees. A large number of publications by various authors reflect the interest in this grey area. Reviews of literature on QWL have been done in the past by few authors. However, considering the contributions of QWL in the recent times, a more comprehensive review is attempted here. In this paper, the author has reviewed QWL components literature in a way that would help researchers, academicians and HR executives to take a closer look at the growth, development and applicability of these QWL components. The authors have examined various papers, and have proposed a new set of QWL components to measure the degree of QWL of employees in the changed scenario. They are  Work environment, Job satisfaction, Opportunities For Growth And Advancement, Adequate and fair compensation, Emotional Intelligence, Organizational commitment, Organizational culture, Relationship and co operations, Job security, Occupational stress, Leadership styles, Nature of Work, Facilities, Autonomy of work, Employee Attitude, Job Challenges/ Job responsibility, Training and Development, Adequacy of resources.

The value of education is a dynamic and multi-dimensional concept that refers not only to the educational model but also to the institutional mission and its goals, as well as to the specific standards of the system, facility, program, or event. In today's competitive scenario, the academic institutions need to focus explicitly on providing effective and quality education to the students with the help of experienced academicians. The education quality would increase when the faculty members are having a better quality of work life, and this can be possible by providing better welfare conveniences to them by the academic institutions. Welfare amenities enable the staff members to live a quality and more satisfactory life. These facilities also help to keep their motivation levels high. The chapter articulates the existence of quality of work life programs in academic institutions in order to retain valuable faculty members who influence the value of education.

From a study of organizational situations which indicate the hidden realities of Quality of Work Life (QWL) in our organizations, the author focuses on the point that management academics who play an important role in ‘educating’ managers may wish to examine QWL in the light of a paradigm radically different from the one currently used. This alternative paradigm, based on a study of Indian psychophilosophy, is offered from a strictly problem-solving point of view. The author suggests that the will-to-yoga can be the only viable process for toning up QWL.

Purpose Higher education institutions understand the importance of the quality of work life (QoWL) since it directly impacts faculty members’ involvement in providing high-quality teaching. The purpose of this paper is to compare the QoWL of faculty members in undergraduate medical and undergraduate engineering programs offered at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory study design was adopted and 100 faculty members from each program were selected. A pretested QoWL questionnaire was distributed among faculty members using the Questionpro online survey portal. Findings Results showed that there is no significant difference between the two programs with regard to the overall QoWL (p>0.05). However, a significant difference was observed with respect to dimensions such as “working condition/environment,” “psychosocial factors at work place” and “job satisfaction and job security.” Also, there is a positive relationship observed between all the dimensions of QoWL (p<0.05). Originality/value This study will help educational policy planners to understand the differences in QoWL of faculty members in different programs so as to develop appropriate strategies for its improvement.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors affecting quality of work life (QWL) of teachers working in Higher Education Institutions. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted by sampling 347 teaching faculty members through questionnaires. Findings Fair communication plays the strongest role and social networks have the weakest role in shaping the QWL in higher educational institutions (HEIs) of Pakistan. The relationship of social networks and QWL negates the Hofstede’s view of Pakistan society to a great extent. Research limitations/implications A cross-sectional data set is used for tapping a small sample size. The direct effects of four factors were considered for examination. The examination of indirect effects for the factors having weak effects is recommended. Practical implications Decision makers having intentions to improve QWL in HEIs must adopt procedural justice and effective communication channels; they should have high respect for employees and should help them to develop networks within the HEIs. Social implications Inter-relationships at workplace are hampering due to weak social networks. Originality/value The study is an important landmark in highlighting the factors that must be available for higher QWL of faculty members of public sector HEIs.
