AbstractBiancaea sappan  (BS) is traditionally used to treat anticonvulsants, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anticoagulant, antiviral, immunostimulant, antioxidant, and antimicrobial treatments. Flavonoids are found in Secang; flavonoids are secondary metabolites that have antioxidant activity. This study aims to identify the flavonoids using TLC and determination of flavonoids content in BS leaves. Initially, The methanol extract of BS was obtained by maceration with ethanol. The qualitative analysis of flavonoid was using TLC and visualization by sprayed with AlCl3. The determination of total flavonoid content is conducted based on the AlCl3 method with total flavonoids expressed in QE (Quercetin equivalent) at the maximum wavelength of 431 nm. The research results showed that BS leaves contain flavonoids and the total flavonoid content of BS leaf extract is 1.0318 mg QE / g extract.Keywords: Caesalpinia sappan; Flavonoid content, Spectrophotometric

The study was conducted in 2017 in the district of Sivas. In the study, 20 genotypes, which are considered to be different from each other, taking into account the fruit characteristics such as color and size and shape, were determined from the hawthorns that were naturally grown in the flora of Suşheri. At harvest time, the fruit, which would be adequate for pomological and biochemical measurements and analyzes, was harvested. According to the results of the measurements and analyzes in the study, fruit weight was found to vary between 0.68 g and 6.35 g, fruit width was between 10.52 and 29.48 mm and fruit length was between 11.40 and 20.67 mm. The highest firmness values were recorded with the genotype (G) 20 genotype, while the G4 had the lowest values in terms of the firmness values of the fruit flesh. While there are no significant differences between the pH values of the genotypes, the differences between the genotypes in terms of SSC, TA and vitamin C contents are quite significant. It has been found that there are significant differences between the genotypes in terms of total phenolic, total flavonoid and antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content ranged from 218.8 (G17) to 605.8 (G5 and G8) mg GAE kg–1 f.w., while the lowest total flavonoid content was 21.58 (G 17) and the highest total flavonoid content was 67.75 (G9) mg GAE kg–1 f.w. When the antioxidant activity was evaluated, the DPPH values were 1.08 (G17) – 15.43 (14) mmol TE kg–1 f.w., the FRAP values were 15.43 (G16) – 47.23 (G8) mmol TE kg–1 f.w. respectively.

Background: Beluntas (Pluchea indica L.) is an Indonesian plant that grows wild and is used as traditional medicine. Beluntas leaves are reported to contain phenolic, and flavonoid is a part of phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds other than flavonoids include 1,3,4,5-tetra-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 3,4,5-tri-O-caffeoylquinic acid, chlorogenic acid, and ferulic acid. Flavonoid compounds in beluntas leaves are quercetin, apigenin, luteolin and chrysoeriol. Methanol solvents are reported to be able to extract higher polyphenol and flavonoid contents than other solvents. Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of 20%, 50% and 75% solvent concentration of methanol on total phenol and total flavonoid levels of beluntas leaf extract. Methods: In this study, the extraction process was carried out by maceration, the determination of total phenol content was carried out by the Follin-Ciocalteu method. Determination of total flavonoid levels was carried out by the Colorimetric method. Data on phenol and flavonoid levels were analyzed statistically. Results: The yield of beluntas leaf extract in this study was respectively from the lowest methanol concentration of 24.094% w/w, 31.126% w/w, 24.838% w/w. The value of total phenol levels increased with increasing methanol concentration, namely 124.84 mg GAE/g, 138.3 mg GAE/g, and 147.91 mg GAE/g. The highest total flavonoid value in 75% methanol extract is 69.72 mg QE/g, followed by 20% methanol extract at 46.29 mg QE/g and the lowest is found in 50% methanol extract at 32.80 mg QE/g. The results of statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test showed that there were significant differences (p<0.05) in the value of total phenol levels and total flavonoids of the three extracts. Conclusion: The difference in the concentration of methanol solvents affects the value of total phenol levels and total flavonoids with the highest value produced by a 75% methanol solvent.  Objective: Garcinia lateriflora Blume has been reported to have antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method with methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane leaves extract inhibitory concentration 50% (IC50) levels of 6.18, 8.03, and 156.8 μg/mL, respectively. Meanwhile, there has been no literature regarding G. lateriflora Blume’s lipoxygenase inhibition activity. The aim of this study was to determine the potential antioxidant activity and lipoxygenase inhibition activity of three leaf extracts of G. lateriflora Blume. Methods: These study test methods involved an assessment of antioxidant activity using the ferric reducing antioxidant power method, an assessment of lipoxygenase inhibition activity through the in vitro method, and a qualitative analysis of flavonoid and total flavonoid content using thin-layer chromatography and the AlCl3 colorimetric method to reveal the most active extract.Results: Based on the assessment for methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane, the results showed that the effective concentration 50% levels of the antioxidant activity of G. lateriflora Blume leaves extract were 9.567, 16.555, and 50.550 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the IC50 levels of the lipoxygenase inhibition activity were 0.693, 0.793, and 1.316 μg/mL, respectively. The most active extract for both of the tests was methanol extract, which has a total flavonoid content of 6.298 mg quercetin equivalents/g.Conclusions: Based on the test results, it can be concluded that G. lateriflora Blume leaves extracts exhibit antioxidant and lipoxygenase inhibition activities, with methanol extract as the most active extract, containing more flavonoid than the other two extracts.

The antioxidant and total flavonoid content (TFC) of solvent extracts of pericarpand pulp of Garcinia cowa Roxb. were evaluated. The antioxidant activitywas evaluated using 2, 2 Ã¢â‚¬Âdi phenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicalscavenging assay and beta carotene linoleate bleaching ( βCL) assay. Ascorbicacid and butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) were used as the standards. Theethyl acetate extract of the pulp showed the highest inhibition (89.5 ±0.81%) of DPPH radical, along with the highest antioxidant activity (75.1 ±0.60%) in βCL assay and the highest total flavonoid content 67.4 ± 1.41 mgcatechin equivalent (CE)/100g fresh mass at 1000ppm concentration.

Establishment of in vitro cultures from Astragalus glycyphyllos, determination of biomass and analysis of total flavonoids, rutin and camelliaside A were performed. To increase flavonoid production various combinations of plant hormones and light/dark regimen were investigated. Suspension cultures with exogenous quercetin were evaluated for possible increase in flavonoid production. Shoots, calli and suspensions were successfully established. Rutin and camelliaside A were proved in highest amount in shoots. Calli, cultivated on modified G48 medium, with double amount of Ca2+ and Mg2+, achieved higher total flavonoid content (2.37 and 2.03 mg/g DW). Suspensions cultures, cultivated on modified G48 medium with 10, 20 and 30 mg/mL quercetin achieved higher total flavonoid content (0.09, 0.10 and 0.13 mg/mg DW). Biotransformation of quercetin to isoquercitrin was achieved. The highest concentration of isoquercitrin (56.73 ng/mg DW) was observed on suspensions cultures cultivated on modified G48 medium, with 20 mg/mL quercetin.

The flowers of Rhododendron arboreum Smith is a source of polyphenolic compounds. A flavonol, quercetin, was isolated from ethyl acetate fraction of the methanol extract of flower petals of R. arboreum by repeated Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Isolated quercetin was characterized by comparing melting point, Rf values, UV and IR spectra with authentic quercetin. The isolated quercetin was used as a standard for the estimation of total flavonoids.  Total phenolic and total flavonoid content in different parts of R. arboreum was carried out spectrophotometrically using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and Aluminium chloride reagent respectively. Gallic acid and quercetin were used as standard for the construction of calibration curve of phenolic and flavonoid respectively. The results showed that the highest total phenolic content was detected in the 70% acetone extract of the flowers (600 mg GAE/g extract) and petals (600 mg GAE/g extract) and the lowest amount was detected in methanol extract of stem (188 mg GAE/g extract). Similarly, the highest total flavonoid was detected in the 70% acetone extract of the twigs (170 mg QE/g extract) and the lowest amount was detected in the methanol extract of stem (45 mg QE/g extract).  The antioxidant activity of the methanol extracts obtained from different parts of R. arboreum was determined by 2, 2- diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) assay and the radical scavenging activity (IC50) was calculated. The highest free radical scavenging effect was observed in leaves with IC50=8.34 ?g/ml and lowest was observed in stem with IC50=67.83 ?g/ml. The IC50 values, total phenolic and total flavonoid content (correlation coefficient R2= 0.923 for phenolic, R2= 0.965 for flavonoid) were correlated which showed strong correlation indicating that the major components responsible for antioxidant activity is phenolics. The highest the phenolic content, the lowest the IC50 value observed. The result indicated that R. arboreum is a rich source of high value polyphenols as natural antioxidant to use in preventive medicine as well as in food and pharmaceutical industry.Scientific World, Vol. 12, No. 12, September 2014, page 34-40

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the possible use of Ponciri fructus bioconversion extracts as cosmetic ingredients.Method: Total polyphenol, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant effects of Poncirus trifoliata through the ability of diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging were used for antioxidant activity determination. The extracts of Poncirus trifoliata were analyzed using an ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometerResults: The total phenolic content was 62.5±4.19 gallic acid equivalent (GAE) mg/g in the case of alcohol extracts and 82.8±2.55 GAE mg/g for other bioconversion extracts. Therefore, total flavonoids content was found to have increased by 32.4%. The total flavonoid content of ethanol extracts was 30.1±3.15 mg/g, whereas that of other bioconversion extracts was 39.5±35.1 mg/g. Therefore, total flavonoids increased by 31.2%. From DPPH radical results, the alcoholic extract increased from 65.5% to 75.5% after bioconversion. Thus, the bioconversion extracts increased by 10% compared with ethanol extracts.Conclusion: Poncirus trifoliata has excellent antioxidant effects, and it showed increased antioxidant activity after the bioconversion, thereby demonstrating its functional bioutility. Therefore, it can be used as an antioxidant material in the cosmetic and food industry.

Abstract Background: Betula pendula is widespread in Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional medicine since ancient times. Birch leaf extracts are known to exhibit a number of pharmacological activities. Antioxidant activity has also been reported. Aim: The aim of this work was to investigate the antioxidant activity of a dry leaf extract from Betula pendula Roth. Materials and methods: The total flavonoid content was determined. Some of the most commonly used methods were applied to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the extract in vitro and in vivo. The ability of the extract to scavenge DPPH free radicals was evaluated by the method described by Brand-Williams with suitable modifications. ABTS decolorization assay was also applied. The in vivo assay was performed after acute and chronic administration of the extract into white albino rats, in a dose of 100 and 500 mg/kg bw. The antioxidant potential of the plasma was determined using FRAP reagent. Results: A total flavonoid content of 42.5 mg/g was found, expressed as quercetin. The antioxidant activity against ABTS was concentration and time dependent. For example the concentration of 200 μg/ml led to 70.95% – 99.46% scavenging activity. DPPH scavenging activity was found to be about 98% at a concentration of 80 μg/ml. The extract possesses antioxidant potential, comparable with that of Trolox, in acute application. In chronic application, poorer results are observed, probably due to biotransformation and elimination processes. Conclusion: Dried birch leaf extract has a relatively high antioxidant potential and could be used as a natural source of antioxidants.
