Introduction  Promotion from paramedic to manager is common in ambulance services, yet there is limited research concerning paramedics’ experience of this role transition. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of paramedics who have transitioned from clinician to manager. Methods  A qualitative approach was used for this study. Through purposive sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with paramedics who had made the transition to manager. The participants were asked to describe how they felt and what their experiences were concerning this transition. Thematic analysis was undertaken identifying themes within participant responses. Results  Six key themes emerged during the data analysis. Participants described feelings of isolation on moving from the frontline, a lack of feeling part of the team ‘in green’; however, they also reported that previously being a paramedic in some instances gave credibility in their new manager roles. Challenges reported concerned no formal training before transitioning into the role, and the lack of essential managerial experience. Conclusion  This research provided insight into how paramedics feel and perceive the transition from clinician to management roles. A review of the organisational approach to role transition is of benefit to paramedics. Such a review may help identify what changes could be made in support of paramedics transitioning to management roles. Further research is required across other ambulance services to determine the efficacy of these results in the broader ambulance service environment.

Children with intellectual disability and behavioural needs (challenging behaviour) are vulnerable to exclusion from services and communities. The situation is exacerbated by difficulties in accessing appropriate support and services to effectively meet the needs of children and carers. Family perspectives on the ‘lived experience’ of children can provide insight into how behavioural needs can affect their ability to access everyday experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with mothers of children with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviours. Phenomenological thematic analysis provided four key themes: finding our way; square services, round needs; behaviour touches everything and belonging. Experience of inclusion and exclusion was a central tenet of the lived experience. Recommendations call for timely proactive and bespoke interventions to identify and support children at risk of exclusion from communities. Early intervention and effective local provision will avoid increased burdens placed on families and services, in supporting children whose needs are currently unmet within child-centred provision.

Metacognitive knowledge can influence L2 learning and listening; however, little is known about learners’ listening self knowledge, particularly in the EFL context of Bangladesh. The current study is a part of the author’s PhD project (Cite, 0000) that aimed to understand tertiary level EFL listeners’ listening self knowledge in Bangladesh. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 participants on their metacognitive knowledge. There were 15 less successful listeners (LSMs) and 15 more successful listeners (MSLs). The thematic analysis of their listening self knowledge revealed students’ awareness of six aspects of listening self knowledge. Although their overall awareness in terms of frequency of mentions showed no considerable differences between the groups, variances have been observed in particular areas. The LSLs frequently mentioned listening problems and obstacles whereas the MSLs were more aware of the cognitive processes and showed greater motivation and exposure. A huge difference was revealed in self-concept: the LSLs’ negative self-concept differed from the positive self-concept of their counterparts. Insight into listeners’ listening self knowledge has several pedagogical implications.

The aim of this study is to explore how entrepreneurship sustains the barriers in the entrepreneurial process in a developing country like Pakistan. To reach these findings, a qualitative approach was used in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with young entrepreneurs in the region of Hyderabad, Pakistan. After collecting data, thematic analysis was conducted. The findings of the study in the form of final themes suggest that trust issues, family barriers, financial issues, gender issues, educational barriers, corruption, and legal barriers are among the challenges which trigger changes in the entrepreneurial process and its sustainability. This study provides implications for the regional government, academic institutes, financial institutes, entrepreneurs, and society at large when developing a support system and promoting a sustainable entrepreneurial environment by minimizing these challenges and suggestions for an entrepreneurial focus on sustainable entrepreneurship.

ABSTRACT This study's aim was to identify defensive strategies used by nurses working in the Estratégia Saúde da Família to cope with distress and keep working. This structured descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach was conducted Estratégia Saúde da Família units in a city in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of 16 nurses participated. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data and thematic analysis was adopted. The results show that the work organization, conditions and relations are essential for the emergence and intensity of defensive strategies used in the workers' routine. By using defensive strategies, workers can minimize damage to their health, however, there is a need to expand collective actions focused on occupational' health, especially among managers.

The way in which managers perceive their organization's intellectual and social capital has an impact in shaping their choices and how they lead change. The aim of the study was to explore how the managers of a trade union framed the role of its intangible assets in a context of organizational change. A qualitative approach was used; 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with the leaders of a trade union and then analyzed using the method of thematic analysis. Particular attention was paid to the metaphors the managers used to narrate change. The hypothesis underlying this approach is that metaphors are a meaningful resource in that they can convey how organization and its intangible assets are framed. In the results, three “root metaphors” are illustrated—the trade union seen either as a system of domination, an organism, or a culture—together with the consequences of each of these images for the perception and value attributed to the trade union's intangible assets. In conclusion, implications for changing management practices and for further research are discussed.

Successful prosthetic rehabilitation is essential to improve the physical and mental outcomes of people with lower-limb amputation. Evaluation of prosthetic services from a prosthesis user perspective have been published and commissioned by the national bodies, however, the perspectives of clinicians working with service users during rehabilitation have not to date been sought. We sought to determine factors impacting lower-limb prosthetic rehabilitation from a clinician's perspective to inform studies focusing on prosthetic and socket design and fitting. Six clinician (2 prosthetists, 4 physiotherapists) interviewees were self-selected from a survey exploring issues and frustrations during lower-limb prosthetic rehabilitation. Semi-structured interviews explored the impactors on and frustrations with rehabilitation and the prosthetic socket. A thematic analysis was subsequently conducted to identify themes in the responses. Five themes were identified: Service Disparity, Body Impactors, Consequences of Ill-Fit, Prosthesis Irritants, and Limitations of Practice. Each theme, though distinct, relates to the others either as a cause or consequence and should be viewed as such. Addressing the themes will have benefits beyond the issues addressed but also expand into the other themes. This study provides an insight into the clinician perspectives on lower-limb prosthetic rehabilitation, which has not been formally documented to date.

There has been limited research regarding the effectiveness of mentoring for at-risk youth in the United Kingdom and none focussing on a dance-based intervention. This study explored experiences of a mentoring through street dance programme. Eight participants (aged 16–18) and their mentor took part in semi-structured interviews which were transcribed verbatim and the data subjected to thematic analysis. Three emergent themes were identified: Relationship with mentor, changes in outlook and coping with emotions. Data indicated that the programme resulted in increased mental wellbeing, desistance from antisocial behaviours, positive future outlook and greater awareness of life opportunities. A trusting, non-hierarchical mentor-mentee relationship was central. Inclusion of mentor narratives was a novel aspect of the study and allowed for insight into how this was achieved. Street dance itself provided a framework for confidence building, social levelling and bonding. Results are discussed in terms of future directions for good practice.

Despite the fact that tourism is one of Greece's economic pillars and that food can lead to greater satisfaction and loyalty to the destination, little research effort has been devoted to understanding tourists' food consumption complexities. In response, this study aimed at investigating the themes behind the food motivations of international tourists to Greece. A qualitative approach was deployed by implementing semi-structured interviews among tour-ists (n=28), and a thematic analysis was conducted in order to categorize interviewees' statements into eight themes: local culture learning, authentic experience, novelty seeking, social interactions, sensory pleasure, health concerns, familiar food, and the need for suste-nance. These motivations were heterogeneous and exerted significant influence over food choices and eating behavior. Even though Greek destinations attract tourists primarily seek-ing journey-related food elements, other secondary motivations involving travel intentions independent of local gastronomy should not be neglected. Although the factors identified may not be exhaustive, this study provides a clear model for further research concerning tourists' food motivational factors in Greece and other Mediterranean destinations.
