This article examines the development process of the documentary film Passages: Travelling in and out of Film through Brazilian Geography (Lúcia Nagib and Samuel Paiva, 2019) that emerged from a research project on intermediality and cinema. Passages uses an intermedial perspective to approach films which have been produced in Recife and São Paulo since the beginning of the Retomada do Cinema Brasileiro (Brazilian Film Revival) in the mid-1990s, and analyses their connections with other media. Particular focus is given to works created in Recife within the Árido Movie movement, such as Baile perfumado (Perfumed Ball, Paulo Caldas and Lírio Ferreira, 1996), which unveils a whole set of intermedial connections between cinema and music.

AbstractIn this study, part of a research project on Chagas disease among residents of Bolivia in São Paulo, we describe socioeconomic characteristics, knowledge about the disease and access to health services. A structured questionnaire was applied to a sample of 472 Bolivian adults (> 18 years) living in São Paulo enrolled in the Barra Funda School Health Center. The median age of participants was 28.5 years, 75.0% from the Bolivian department of La Paz, who were living in São Paulo for an average of 5.8 years. Regarding knowledge about the disease and exposure to certain risk factors, 47.7% indicated familiarity with the vector, 23.9% had seen vinchuca in their homes in Bolivia and 6.4% reported having been bitten by a triatomine. The conditions of living in rural areas in Bolivia or in other department than La Paz, have a relative with illness, high school graduation and have seen or been bitten by a vinchuca were significantly associated with the knowledge of the vector. This study provides a view on migration that has important implications for the distribution of Chagas’ disease and access to health care by providing subsidies for proposing public health policies.Author summaryThis article expresses part of the results of a research project called “Chagas disease in a population of Bolivian immigrants in São Paulo: an analysis of the prevalence ofTrypanosoma cruziinfection and morbidity of Chagas disease, knowledge of the population about the disease and access to different levels of health care”. The problem of chronic Chagas disease occurs in many countries, including those not considered endemic, as a result of population movements, mainly by immigration due to urbanization which has led to its globalization. It is now considered an emerging disease with significant potential for transmission via blood transfusions, organ transplants and congenital via, in the absence of appropriate strategies in terms of public health, as well as reactivation of chronic disease in urban centers. It’s no different this phenomenon to the city of Sao Paulo. This study analyzed the sociodemographic inserts, labor, migration and knowledge about Chagas disease and its impact on personal, family and professional life of Bolivian immigrants living in São Paulo.

What follows is half an interview, half a passionate first-person report made by and with Professor Reinier Johannes Antonius Rozestraten, with the aim of remembering and telling his years at Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo, Brazil). He begins some time before, remembering how and when he arrived to Brazil, and what have been his first activities, and goes until more recent years, after his official retirement. Language is free and the whole text is a result of dialogues that were transcribed and edited with as few interferences as possible. The interviews were planned as part of another research project, but it is ended now, due to the death of Professor Reinier. Anyway, they constitute a very deserved homage to an important consolidator and immortal witness of brazilian psychology.

A common focus of the international cinematic avant-garde during the 1920s was the power and excitement of cities, something that gave rise in both Europe and the United States to a genre of films known as "city symphonies." Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand's Manhatta (1921), André Sauvage's Études sur Paris (1928), Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera (1929), and Walter Ruttmann’s Berlin: Die Sinfonie Der Großstadt (1927) were examples of this genre. Such films inspired São Paulo: A sinfonia da metrópole, which is analyzed here. Made by Hungarian filmmakers, Rodolfo Lustig and Adalberto Kemeny, the Brazilian film typically documents a day in the life of São Paulo, exalting its urban dynamic as a sign of the city’s and country’s modernity. In examining São Paulo: A sinfonia da metrópole, this chapter shows that while it expresses the city’s speed brought by the experience of modernity, it also departs from its international inspirations to triumphantly project the discipline of labor, projected as a sign of order and progress, which is ultimately projected by the state.

Music is one of the most cherished topics in Brazilian documentary filmmaking. Vinicius (Miguel Faria Jr., 2005), Raul: O início, o fim e o meio (Raul: The Beginning, the End and the Middle, Walter Carvalho, 2012) and Chico: Artista brasileiro (Chico: Brazilian Artist, Miguel Faria Jr., 2015) feature among the most successful Brazilian documentaries from the last twenty years, which makes clear their appeal to national audiences. However, to better articulate their significance it is also crucial to understand them from an international context. The In-Edit – International Music Documentary Film Festival, an event solely devoted to the screening and discussion of music documentaries, allows us to do so. First organised in Barcelona in 2003 and swiftly exported and adapted in multiple countries, the current In-Edit occurs annually in Chile, Brazil, Greece and the Netherlands. Throughout the years, it has also been celebrated in Argentina, Mexico, Germany, Colombia and Peru. In-Edit Brasil was first organised in São Paulo in 2009 and showcases a wide variety of music documentaries both from Brazil and abroad. At the same time, some Brazilian music documentaries are screened in other In-Edits, such as Chile and Spain. In effect, In-Edit organisers hold a privileged perspective on the role that Brazilian music and Brazilian music documentaries play within the international scene. Cristian Pascual (Barcelona, 1980) was the director of In-Edit Barcelona from 2007 to 2019, and he is still part of the organising committee. We met him in São Paulo in 2017, and he provided us with a programmer’s view of music documentaries from all over the world. Despite how political events have altered the country’s international influence in global politics (most notably Jair Bolsonaro taking over as president at the beginning of 2019), we believe that Pascual’s views present a rich reflection on Brazilian specificities regarding the production and reception of music documentaries today.

Palavras-chave: Indústria do cinema brasileiro. The central argument recognizes the deverticalization of the productive system of the film industry and emphasizes the interdependence between the production of hegemonic and independent films, revealing the importance of commercial scale and diversity for the sustainability of the productive system and of the emerging production centers. From this perspective, we work with secondary data offered by ANCINE and IBGE, so that we can see the growth of production in Brazil, the increase in the number of companies and workers in the film industry and the emergence of new production centers besides Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. However, the new production centers still face the challenge of developing the capacity to carry out projects that could be classified as hegemonic or tend to lose professionals to Rio and São Paulo. Keywords: Brazilian film industry. Background: In light of the few reports from intertropical latitudes and their conflicting results, we aimed to replicate and update the investigation of seasonal patterns of suicide occurrences in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: Data relating to male and female suicides were extracted from the Mortality Information Enhancement Program (PRO-AIM), the official health statistics of the municipality of São Paulo. Seasonality was assessed by studying distribution of suicides over time using cosinor analyses. Results: There were 6,916 registered suicides (76.7% men), with an average of 39.0 ± 7.0 observed suicides per month. For the total sample and for both sexes, cosinor analysis estimated a significant seasonal pattern. For the total sample and for males suicide peaked in November (late spring) with a trough in May–June (late autumn). For females, the estimated peak occurred in January, and the trough in June–July. Conclusions: A seasonal pattern of suicides was found for both males and females, peaking in spring/summer and dipping in fall/winter. The scarcity of reports from intertropical latitudes warrants promoting more studies in this area.
