An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during three consecutive seasons in 2004-2006 to find out the effect of sowing date on physiological quality of soybean seed. The experiments included six sowing dates viz. 4 Nov, 24 Nov, 14 Dec, 3 Jan, 23 Jan and 12 Feb and two cultivars namely G-2 and PB-1 in Rabi 2004-05; four sowing dates viz. 25 Jul, 14 Aug, 3 Sept and 23 Sept and three cultivars namely G-2, PB-1 and BS-5 in Kharif II 2005; four sowing dates viz. 26 Nov, 16 Dec, 5 Jan, and 25 Jan, and two cultivars viz. G-2 and PB-1 in Rabi 2005-06. The experiments were conducted in split-plot design with three replications. Results revealed that cultivar G-2 had higher germination and vigour than cultivar PB-1 or BS-5 in all the three seasons. November and December sowing produced seeds with higher germination and vigour for all the cultivars in Rabi season. On the other hand, September sowing produced seeds with high germination and vigour during Kharif II. The study indicated that soybean seeds with high germination and vigour could be obtained by sowing during November to December in Rabi season and August to September in Kharif-II season. PHYSIOLOGICAL POTENTIAL OF SOYBEAN SEEDS PRODUCED WITH PHOSPHATE FOLIAR FERTILIZER   ABSTRACT: Phosphorus is one of the most limiting macronutrients for soybean productivity, and it may influence the physiological quality of seeds. The focus of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar fertilization with phosphorus used in different plant stages in productivity and physiological quality of soybean seeds cv. M6410 IPRO. The influence of foliar fertilization was measured in different plant stages of development “V5, R2, R4, V5+R2, V5+R4, R2+R4 e V5+R2+R4” and the dose was 2,0 l ha-1. The physiological quality of seeds was evaluated by germination, first score, rate of germination speed and emergence speed, field conditions emergence, tetrazolium test, seedlings performance, cold test and accelerated aging. The yield components of soybean seeds were not influenced by the period of foliar fertilization application with phosphorus. The application on V5 and V5+R2+R4 stages provided seeds with high germination and vigor. However, storage for 180 days even under controlled conditions reduced the seeds physiological potential.   Keywords: Glycine max, phosphate fertilization, vigor, storage.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of timbó seed coat on the physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds. Timbó seeds were collected from mature fruits in the Cerrado. The external layer of the seed coat was removed and crushed in a mill and used in the treatment of soybean seeds. Three lots of soybean seeds were used, from high, medium and low vigor seeds. The treatments were: powder; gel; hydroalcoholic extract; synthetic fungicide (Vitavax® - Thiram 200 sc), and untreated seeds. The physiological quality of the soybean seeds was determined by standard germination, accelerated aging, length, fresh and dry mass of seedlings. Blotter test was used to determine the sanitary quality. The statistical analyze used was a completely randomized 3 × 5 factorial design, considering three seed lots and five treatments. Treatment with the coat seed extract and gel improves the physiological quality of soybean seeds from low vigor lots. The treatment of seeds with gel decreases the incidence of Fusarium and Penicillium genus; and treatment with the powder reduced the incidence of the Cercospora genus.

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is infected by a large number of fungal pathogens, among them white mold agent [Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib) de Bary]. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of the seed-processing stages on the physical and physiological qualities and on the incidence of S. sclerotiorum in soybean seeds. In this study, seeds from eight cultivars coming from production fields naturally infested in the counties of the State of Goiás, Brazil, from two harvests (2009/2010 and 2010/2011), were used. Samples were collected in the processing stages: hopper, pre-cleaning, discard one (from pre-cleaning), cleaning, sieve classifiers, spiral, gravity table, and discard two (after cleaning until processing ending). The following parameters were evaluated: seed- moisture content, physical purity, germination and tetrazolium. Additional tests and the detection of S. sclerotiorum in paper roll and the neon method were performed. The processing of soybean seeds improves the physical and physiological quality of the seed lots, in addition to eliminating sclerotia. The stages of pre-cleaning and cleaning significantly reduce sclerotia in seed lot. The amount of sclerotia in the sample is not necessarily correlated with the incidence of S. sclerotiorum in mycelial form.

Variations in the sowing date of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) reflect directly on the physiological potential of the produced seeds. This study aimed to analyze the yield and the physical and physiological quality of seeds from the main stem and branches of Salvia hispanica plants grown at different sowing dates. A field experiment was conducted in the crop year of 2016/2017 in five sowing dates (16/09/22, 16/10/28, 17/01/03, 17/02/08 and 17/03/24) in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Harvest at each sowing date was done when 80% of the leaves of each plant exhibited a darker color, indicating that they were dry. Seed yield was determined in each plant compartment (main stem and branches) and final ear length (cm) and diameter (cm) were also measured at all sowing dates. The following physical and physiological tests were performed to determine seed quality: water content, mass of one thousand seeds, germination test, first count germination, length (root and hypocotyl) and dry matter of the seedlings. Chia can be sown from September to February providing seed yield with high physical and physiological quality. The physical and physiological quality of the chia seeds does not differ between main stem and branches. In late sowing, there is the risk of frost occurrence what may impair the physiological quality and the yield of chia seeds. The best sowing month for obtaining higher yield of chia seeds in a south subtropical region is January.

ABSTRACT: F. graminearum is the main causal agent of Head blight in cereals in Argentina. This is a disease that develops during the host floral state. When the reproductive structures in the host are invaded, grains may be shriveled and reduced in weight, causing a decrease in yield. Physiological diagnostic techniques on seeds detect the damages produced by this fungus could be used to take decisions related to the quality of seed lots. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible physiological damage caused by F. graminearum isolates in soybean seeds and wheat caryopsis. Seeds and caryopsis were obtained from plants exposed to fungal infection and were evaluated under two situations: artificial inoculations under greenhouse conditions and natural infection from fields of Santa Fe Province (33°43'22''S; 62°14'46''W). Seed weight, topographical tetrazolium test, standard germination test, electrical conductivity test and X-ray test were performed in soybean seeds and wheat caryopsis from each treatment. Differential behaviors of F. graminearum strains in susceptible soybean and wheat cultivars under greenhouse conditions revealed specific interactions among soybean and wheat genotypes with this fungus. F. graminearum infection in susceptible cultivars under greenhouse conditions produced a significant decrease in the physiological quality of soybean seed and wheat caryopsis. These behaviors were not detected under field conditions in the evaluated locations. All seed quality tests used in this experiment were useful to show differences in infection in soybean and wheat independently of F. graminearum infection.

Abstract: The release of soybean varieties resistant to dicamba herbicide leads to the possibility of dicamba herbicide drift into soybean seed production fields and reduction in the physiological quality of soybean seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds as a function of the application of reduced rates of dicamba in two phenological phases. A randomized block experimental design was used, with four replications. The 4 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement consisted of four reduced rates (0.028, 0.28, 2.8 and 28 g.ha-1) of dicamba applied in the V4 and R2 stages + a control. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated after harvest and at six months after storage at 20 °C. At the rate of 28 g.ha-1 of dicamba applied in the V4 and R2 stages, seed germination declined by 15% and 42%, respectively. After storage, seeds under the 28 g.ha-1 dicamba treatment had 64% lower germination compared to the lowest application rate evaluated, and electrical conductivity doubled in relation to the control. The physiological quality of soybean seeds declines under these reduced rates of dicamba applied in the V4 and R2 stages, both before and after storage.

Seed processing machines remove viable seeds from non-viable seeds and inert materials based on physical characteristics. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of each processing machine alone on the physical and physiological qualities of the soybean seeds. Seed samples of two soybean cultivars - BMX Potência RR and NK 7059 RR - were collected from five machines separately: air-screen machine, spiral separator, size grader and gravity separator. The experimental design was a completely randomized factorial, varying with the equipment, with 20 replications. Samples were assessed by germination test, accelerated aging, viability and vigor by tetrazolium test (TZ), weathering damages (TZ class 3), mechanical damages (TZ 1-8) and (TZ 6-8), stink bug damages (TZ 1-8) and weight of one thousand seeds. The air-screen machine and the spiral separator did not contribute to improve physiological quality of seeds; the size grader concentrated mechanical damages in larger sizes and stink bug damages in smaller sizes. Gravity separators showed higher quality seeds at the upper part of the machine compared to intermediate and lower parts. Mechanical damages and stink bug damages can be reduced by gravity separator and weathering damages are not eliminated by any of the machines.
