Composition and abundance of zooplankton in a polyculture pond was studied during June 2003 to May 2004. A total of 33 major species of zooplankton including 11genera of Rotifera, 4 of Copepoda, 4 genera of Cladocera and 2 genera of Protozoa were identified. The monthly abundance of zooplankton varied form 4228 indiv/l in October 2003 to169 indiv/l in January 2004. Among the total zooplankton, Rotifera comprised of 71.07%, Copepoda comprised of 12.49% Nauplii comprised of 11.96%, Cladocera comprised of 1.49% and Protozoa comprised of 2.99%. Water temperature (r = 0.18), free CO2 (r = 0.40), TDS (r = 0.14) and water depth (r = 0.55) showed positive correlation with zooplankton but air temperature, pH, dissolved O2, total hardness and ammonia showed negative correlation (the coefficients being -0.18, -0.05, -0.25, -0.38 and -0.11 respectively) with the occurrence of zooplankton. The average growth of fishes and zooplankton showed positive correlation in all cases but the relations were insignificant when tested statistically.Bangladesh J. Zool. 42(1): 67-76, 2014

The present investigation deals with limno- biotic status of the Bhoj wetland from January to August, 2009. From the data it was apparent that correlations between the physico-chemical factors and dynamics of zooplankton could be seen. Systematic sampling was done and five sampling stations were selected. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the correlation of zooplankton diversity with the physico-chemical factors. The analysis of data showed a positive correlation of copepods with temperature, indicating that the copepods develop better in warm periods after a mild and dump winter. This paper shows the results obtained in field analysis performed at the Tamis River, starting from the settlement Jasa Tomic - border between Serbia and Romania to Pancevo - confluence of Tamis into the Danube. The Tamis is a 359 km long river rising in the southern Carpathian Mountains. It flows through the Banat region and flows into the Danube near Pancevo. During the years the water quality of the river has severely deteriorated and badly affected the environment and the river ecosystem. In situ measurements enabled determination of physico-chemical parameters of water quality of the Tamis River on every 400 m of the watercourse, such as: water temperature, pH value, electrical conductivity, contents of dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation. The main reason of higher pollution of Tamis is seen in connection to DTD hydro system. Sampling was performed at 7 points with regard to color, turbidity, total hardness, alkalinity, concentration of ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, iron, chlorides and sulphates in samples. The aim of the present work was to evaluate water quality in the Tamis River taking into account significant pollution, which originates from settlements, industry and agriculture, and to suggest appropriate preventive measures to further pollution decreasing of the river's water.

Bioassay experiments were carried out in order to evaluate values of physico-chemical parameters of the cultured pond water for induced pearl production in Lamellidens marginalis. The pond was located at Botanical garden of Bipin Bihari P.G. College, Jhansi. The parameters included for this study were Colour, Temperature, Transparency, pH, Free CO2 , DO, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium and Total Alkalinity of cultured pond water and to maintain them for the healthy growth of mussels during the whole culture period for obtaining designer pearls.

Zooplankton constitute important food item of many omnivorous and carnivorous fishes. The study was conducted with an aim to study the zooplankton production including physico-chemical parameters with an emphasis to the existing management practices taken by the operators. The study was carried out in a culture and a non-culture pond of Rajshahi University campus was carried out from September, 2004 to February, 2005. Monthly fluctuations of some physico-chemical parameters were noted. The ponds showed alkaline in nature with moderate bicarbonate alkalinity. Diurnal change of water temperature, free CO2 and dissolved Oxygen were also studied. Four groups of zooplankton were identified, of which copepods (1260 units/l and 973.33 units/l in pond-1 and pond-2 respectively) were most dominant. A total of 9 genera of zooplankton were identified of which Cyclops (68.25% and 60.28% of total copepods) was most abundant in both ponds. Total zooplankton showed positive correlation with pH, carbonate alkalinity (CO3) and bicarbonate alkalinity (HCO3) in both ponds and DO, carbon dioxide (CO2) in pond-1. Present findings indicated that the culture pond showed better result than that of the non-culture pond regarding zooplankton production. Water quality is an index of health and well being of a society. The pollution of water bodies is one of the areas of major concern to environment. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to evaluate the physical, chemical and microbiological parameters of Jhajjar rivulet of J&K. The study has been carried out by taking water samples at three different sites of the rivulet i.e. site 1, site 2 and site3. During the study, the physico-chemical parameters like pH, temperature, colour, total hardness, BOD, COD, DO, TDS and TSS in the water samples were studied. In microbiological examination, the presence of coliform in the water samples were studied.  It has been observed that there was a pollution load mostly at site 3 and slightly at site 2, it may be due to the release of huge quantities of sewage, effluent and manmade activities at the respective sites but the water from all the sites was found free from microbial contamination. It was concluded that water at site 1 is suitable for drinking as compared to site 2 and site 3 of the rivulet.

The study was carried out to estimate the temperature, light intensity, salinity, Dissolved O2 (DO), pH values and the biotic parameter chlorophyll- a in the water column related with the depth. Because, the physico-chemical parameters affect greatly both primary and secondary producers in marine life. For this purpose the physico-chemical properties were determined day and night for 40 meter depth during the eight days. The means were compared by using the analysis of variance method and Duncan’s Multiple Comparison Test. Also physico-chemical parameters were estimated by using the analysis of regression and correlation. The effect of temperature and salinity were found significant according to the result of the analysis of variance during the day. Also the similar results were found for the night. While the effect of the depth on the chloropyll-a a was significant in the night, the effect of the depth on the DO was not significant in the day and night. The correlations among the depth and the parameters were defined. It was found the negative correlation between the depth and the temperature and light intensity. Determination coefficient of the model for salinity was also found different for day time. The correlation values among the depth and the temperature, salinity and pH were found different for the night.

Itahari Sub-metropolitan pond is located in the centre of the city. Influence of variations in physico-chemical parameters on aquatic flora and fauna especially in fishes brought strong stress on fishes and increases the incidence of diseases leading to high mortality. Due to lack of adequate knowledge about it, productivity of ponds is very low. In the present study, maximum and minimum variations and correlation between different physico-chemical parameters - air temperature, water temperature, pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids, dissolved carbon dioxide, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chloride, total alkalinity, total hardness and phosphate were taken into consideration. The water quality of fish ponds were normal except high fluctuation of chloride 4.0 - 44.87mg/l and ammonia 0.48-13.6 mg/l during manuaring period and casual addition of wastes like toilet cleaners, caustic potash etc.. Due to sudden fall in DO less than 4 mg/l during April and May, 2014 and increment of ammonia after addition of toilet wastes in Sept.19, 2015 ; mass mortality of fishes Labeo rohita, Cirrhina mrigala, Hypothalamichthys molitrix, Aristichthysnobilis occurred in the study site.

Algae are organisms with size ranging from microscopic to hundred feet to large seaweeds. The present study focuseson the algal diversity in Pandalam area of Achankovil river, Kerala, India. Pilgrims of Sabarimala uses the water of Achankovil River for various sanitary purposes and there by waste dump in river may cause water pollution and related ecological problems.Water samples werecollected during the monsoon and post monsoon seasons in the early morning before increasing the intensity of sunlight. Phytoplanktonic forms were collected using plankton net.The analysis of physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity and productivity show a slight variation in mean value during the two seasons. The study reveals presence of forty one algal genera belongings to four algal classes.Theresults showed that parameters such as dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, total hardness and silicate indicatevariations with relation to seasons.The variations and distribution of phytoplankton and changes in physico-chemical parameters in freshwater helps to know the water quality of the river.


Ground water occurs commonly and is widely distributed and is the most reliable resource the quality of ground water needs to be monitored and preserved. In this study, as a part of the research work an attempt is made to assess the health of ground water in Mustoor sub-watershed. 11 Samples are selected from the influencing major villages and villages with surface waterbody in the sub watershed. A water grade card is an aid to educate and remind about the conditions of naturally available water resource around the users with the help of Water Quality Index method in comparison with Indian Standards IS 10500. Multi-metric indicators and indices aid to build a water grade card, in this study 11 samples of ground water are tested for eight selected Physico-chemical parameters (pH, turbidity, iron, fluoride, chloride, nitrate, total dissolved solids and total hardness) in March and October months, 2018 as Pre and Post Monsoon months. GWQI method helps in assigning the grades. It is intended for diverse users: like any individuals and institutions to policymakers and planners. The indicators collectively provide the overall health that is scored and is graded to report the condition or quality of the groundwater in the sub watershed in a better understanding way to the common people with the help of grades.

The physico-chemical parameters and primary productivity of a fish pond of Madhumara, Biratnagar was studied from October 2007 to September 2008. The maximum air and water temperature and water transparency were recorded in rainy season, whereas maximum pH, dissolved oxygen and chloride were recorded in winter season.  Free carbon dioxide and total hardness were maximum in summer season. The gross primary productivity, net primary productivity and community respiration were found maximum in winter season.
